This article attempts to analyze John Greenleaf Whittier's anti-slavery poems. As a Quaker, he criticizes and satirizes the rife slavery in the mid nineteenth century. His thoughts are based on his religious belief. "The Farewell of a Virginia Slave Mother" depicts the mother who lost daughter for she was sold to the South. The harsh state of the corrupt South is described. In "Massachusettes to Virginia," the speaker, deploring the moral corruption of Virginia, denounces any attempt to return slaves to slave states. With a moonrise as a socio-political symbol, "Arisen at Last" celebrates the passage of law to protect fugitive slaves. Written after the Civil War, "The Peace Autumn" celebrates the peaceful situation in which Emancipation was declared. His efforts contributed to the abolitionist literature.
This article focuses on analysing and interpreting cultural imperialism issues that have long been debated. One of issues among them is related to the characteristics of international cultural fluid. What had been debated is that cultural imperialism has been ended or not and the debates were connected to the so called 'reverse cultural imperialism'. The other issue is about this fluid is the continuation of globalization or a part of localization and this is related to the phenomena of cultural homogenization or hybrid. General trend was that simplistic cultural imperialism which had been occurred during the 1970s and 1980s was no longer effective but global dominance by transnational global media is still strong and worldwide. Therefore my research interest is centered on how they look international cultural exchanges with regard to cultural imperialism. And is the framework of cultural imperialism thesis still effective tool in researching and analysing international cultural flows? How do we look globalization relating to international exchanges? Is globalization an another aspect of imperialism? In conclusion, international cultural fluid is not so simple. Like natural phenomena or human progress, a phenomenon is not consisted of a single factor or relation. Cultural fluid is a complex one mixed with various phenomena and relations. This is related to internal and external contradictions, internal and external dynamics of a society and nation, and social and cultural life of human beings. Recent research results show that globalization and localization are closely related to many country's programming schedule, and particular cultural interpretation of specific programmes and culture are adopted to the country's culture and patterns. Cultural fluid has both-sides. One the hand it has useful and positive sides and on the other hand it has harmful and negative aspects. Imperialistic factor, globalization, cultural homogenization or hybrid are all operated and functioned together in cultual fluid. It is difficult to say that cultural imperialism thesis has been ended because American and global media's dominance is still effective. What needed at this time for us is a complex and dynamic analysis of international cultural fluid instead of simplistic cultural imperialism.
The increased concern about national security in the U.S. after the 9/11 terrorist attacks has influenced public rights of access to government information and its legal foundation, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Public access to government information has been restricted at the policy level by a series of legislative and executive changes in FOIA after September 11, 2001, but the examination of statistics on FOIA implementation between fiscal years 1999 and 2004 shows that the strengthened national security measures did not have a considerable impact at the implementation level during this period. These contrasting findings might be due to the public officials' informal reaction to the criticism of the restriction on public access, bureaucratic inertia, and the use of new record categories not subject to FOIA.
This article reviews previous literature on the metaverse and attempts to provide a refined definition for this phenomenon. Metaverse has recently been in the spotlight among discussions by the industry and the media while a consensus on the exact definition of metaverse is yet to be determined. Since Neal Stephenson first coined the term metaverse in his novel "Snow Crash" in 1992, the Acceleration Studies Foundation (ASF) was the first to analyze the concept of metaverse in 2007. While ASF's effort did not receive much spotlight it may have deserved, metaverse gained much attention in the fall of 2020 when NVIDIA announced its real-time simulation and collaboration platform for 3D production named "Omniverse" as a next-generation alternative for the Internet along with Roblox defining its service as metaverse during its IPO. Since then, metaverse has been commonly recognized as a world where we can cross over reality and virtuality. Based on the two axes and four scenarios proposed by the ASF, we review the literature across four realms as follows - virtual reality, mirror world, augmented reality, and lifelogging. Then, we examine the issues with the existing definition of metaverse and propose an alternative explanation by focusing on human behavior and user experience. Finally, we reassess the concept of metaverse and incorporate human communication, reality-based and virtual-based activities, and eXtended reality as elements to properly define metaverse.

This study examines the concentration in terms of supply and consumption in the Korean movie market, focusing on screen size, nationality, and the box office. For analysis, it selects the top 100 movies in the box office each year for 15 years from 2005 to 2019. According to the result, the number of screens increased steadily every year, and the screen concentration became very high. For the top 100 movies, it increased from 12% to 30% of the total screen. It became higher in the case of the top 10 movies. As the number of screens increased, multiplex assigned more screens to one movie. Multiplex's screen allocation continued to increase, with one movie taking up more 60% of the total screen. This became more serious after 2011 and 2012. Market share of the top 100 movies accounted for about 95% of the total box office performance, even though the number of released movies is about 3,000. Whether multiplex preferred Hollywood movies or not, its screen assignment was found to favor Hollywood movies over Korean ones. In the case of film nationality, both Korean and Hollywood movies accounted for 90.7%. Two countries had a market share of 96.6%. There was no single side except Korea and the United States in the top 10. The increase in the number of screens deepened the concentration in screen allocation. The concentration in the screen allocation led to the concentration of consumption. The Korean film market is the case where the increase of movie screens did not create a diversity of supply and consumption. It also did not affect the diversity of film nationality. This research reveals that supplied concentration and consumed concentration are positively correlated, and that the former is a little lower than the latter.
The present paper reviews the development of democracy in the West and Korea. The first part of the paper provide a cultural framework for understanding the development of democracy in West and Korea. In the second part of the paper, an empirical study conducted in Korea will be presented. A survey questionnaire was developed to assess respondents' conception of political participation, political efficacy, trust, leadership, and social relations and it has been administered to national stratified sample in Korea (n=1,000). The results indicate that Korean respondents support the basic ideas of liberal democracy, such as the right to vote, participate in political organization, freedom of speech, and criticize government. At the same time, Korean respondents supported collective values, such as harmonious family life, harmonious social relations, and governmental welfare programs. Although Koreans trusted close ingroup members, such as family members and friends, they were less likely to trust their colleagues and outgroup members and were not likely to trust political and governmental institutions. Moreover, Korean respondents showed a low degree of political participation and efficacy and a high degree of political alienation. As for leadership, Koreans preferred moral and strong leaders. The overall results indicate that in Korea, although the basic ideals of democracy are valued, the method of implementing these ideals is different from the West. Detailed analysis of the results and implications of the study will be presented.
Bourdieu is one of the few social science researchers who were interested in photography. Bourdieu's work on photography appears principally in two books: Un art moyen: Essai sur les usagrs sociaux de la photographie(1965) and La distinction(1979). In these books, Bourdieu analyzes the role of photography in the family life of peasants and small town and urban dwellers. He shows how different classes and groups express their esthetic worldview in response to different photographs and photographic styles. What Bourdieu analyzed is not just photography but ways of photographing and ways of looking at pictures. Through these analyses, Bourdieu explores the social definition of photography. Bourdieu's ideas on photographic practice in social life are as follows. First, the photography, especially family photography generally practiced, has the integrative function. It recreates the group by ritualizing and solemnizing the important moments of social life in which the group reaffirms its unity. Second, the photography as esthetic practice in search of legitimacy as a fine art becomes a means by which different classes are pitted against each other. Each of classes gives its own meaning to photographic practice. Despite its originality and persuasive power, Bourdieu's work on photography has its own limits. The data used by Bourdieu are 35 years old and relevant to European social life. Things has changed since. First, the technological improvement and innovation in photography was considerable. Cheap and good photographic materials, easy to operate, made photographic practice everybody's everyday activity. New media like camcorder and digital camera made photography one of the industrial discards like jukebox. It means that photography does not function as important means of distinction between classes any longer. The integrative function of the photography becomes more ambiguous too. Second, the esthetic status of the photography has changed. The family photography was already integraed into fine art. Photography is not a middle-brow art any more. Bourdieu's work on photography shows how photography was used by different social classes in European social life of the 1960's. His work is historically and geographically limited. Moreover, his work was ordered by the french affiliate of Eastman Kodak Company. And all along the analysis, Bourdieu didn't hide his intention of distinguishing his sociological method from the other methods, especially psychological one. These mean that Bourdieu's work was done in a specific context, for specific purposes. In this respect, Bourdieu's work on photography, like every sociological work, can not claim to be universal.
This research is designed to evaluate perception of "the role of broadcasting in the process of unification" among South Korean propaganda broadcasting experts. This research used Q-methodology for in-depth evaluation of the experts' perception towards propaganda broadcasts. Total sixteen experts who work at the propaganda broadcasting company domestically or internationally as well as conduct related researches were selected as P-samples. This research listed sixty Q statements covering issues such as Perception of Unification, General Propaganda Broadcasts, Private Propaganda Broadcasts, Communication between North and South Korea. According to traditional way of Q-analysis, it drew two types of perception; Type 1: North Korean Liberal Broadcasts, Type2: Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Broadcasts. For in-depth analysis, positive and negative statements were analyzed based on its tendency. As a result, positive statements tend to follow 'the Role of Unification Broadcasts' and negative statements followed 'the regulation of Private Broadcasts' When further researches were conducted on positive statements based on its axis of tendencies, Type 1 and Type 2 were categorized as follows; the Role of Unification Broadcasts- North Korean Liberal Broadcasts and Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Broadcasts. On the other hand, when negative statements were analyzed based on its tendencies, the result of Type 1 and Type 2 were as follows; the Improvement of Private Broadcasts- Redeeming the Private Propaganda Broadcasts and Criticizing Private Propaganda Broadcasts. Regardless such differences, experts do agree on the idea which emphasize the role of broadcasts in the process of unification and also they share the same thought on the need to improve the private propaganda broadcasts. This research expected to contribute to society by making differences in analyzing propaganda broadcasting experts' perception in an objective and positive way compare to other existing researches. Therefore, it proposes several suggestions to consider when producing propaganda broadcasts.
This paper aims to investigate the cultural conflicts and characteristics of anti-Korean Wave discourse taken placed among Southeast Asian countries. To do this, it takes Vietnam and Indonesia as the study cases, which have been showing a trend of anti-Korean Wave discourse as well as high popularity of Hallyu. As research methods, the paper analyzes both on-line discourses of anti-Korean Wave and the email audience interviews from both countries. The results show some significant differences between the two countries as well as the similarity that Anti-Korean Wave discourses have been actively produced and disseminated through on-line media. As for Indonesia, the Anti-Korean Wave discourse pivots on the elements clashing between Indonesia's religion and cultural values and Korean consuming culture. According to the Anti-Korean Wave discourse, K-pop contents and entertainers are criticized for damaging the society's morals and cultural identities based on Islamic rules and values. Thus, the sentiment of the Anti-Korean Wave is likely to lead to the cultural nationalism for the sake of their cultural identity. As for Vietnam, anti-Korean Wave discourse mainly consists of issues on enthusiastic K-pop fans' anti-social behaviors and generational conflicts which are presumed attributed as the chief factor of the Anti-Korean Wave. In the Vietnamese discourse, social elites and adults treat the enthusiastic K-pop fans as those who are in need of educational care or psychological therapy. Unlike the Indonesian case, anti-Korean Wave discourse in Vietnam criticized the K-pop and the performer's competence for being cheap sexy and incompetence. They also denounce Korean dramas for their trite, typical story lines, use of excessive emotion, and unrealistic nature. However, the two country's interview participants have in common both acknowledged that rather than considering the Anti-Korean Wave as an issue that needs to be resolved it should be embraced as a natural cultural phenomenon.
According to viewpoints of researchers and stakeholders, various opinions can be suggested on self-governing police system. Therefore, success of Korean self-governing police system will be defending on how to balance among conflicting values such as Empowerment, Political neutrality, Financial issues, Comprehensive competence in maintaining public safety. Before the launching of self-governing police system nation-wide, the experience of Jeju provincial police will be valuable model case. In specific, enlargement of work scope of self-governing police in Jeju province which has been introduced since last year will be a useful reference. There is more pessimism about self-governing police of Jeju province so far. However, this perspective is mostly based on the issue regarding hardwares such as manpower, equipment, law and organization. Issues regarding softwares such as organizational culture, operation system and work process need more attention to evaluate self-governing police system properly. To mark the first year after enlargement of work scope of Jeju police, this study demonstrate the overall result and implications of self-governing police of Jeju province based on documents, statistics, reports and media reports. In result, several preconditions are needed to implement the self-governing police system nation-wide successfully. 1. Strengthen the link between local government and local police 2. Establish the foundation for collaboration of state and local police 3. Enhance the aspect of citizen autonomy in local level 4. Reinforcing the capability of handling situation of state and local police 5. Invigorating the inter-organizational working group to operate self-governing police system effectively. The self-governing police system is unclosed topic to discuss. After this study, in-depth studies should be followed with more resources. Particularly, additional perspective including redundancy and equity need to be considered regarding self-governing police. By getting with the changes of macroscopic trends - lowbirth and aging, the fourth industrial revolution and possible reunification of north and south Koreas - these studies should suggest the long-term blueprint of self-governing police system of Korea.
