  • This study presents geometric nonlinear and material analysis of under-tension structure using Total Lagrangian and Updated Lagrangian method. In the regard, the under-tension system enables the load of upper part to carry to the end of beam by pre-tensional force in cable. The under-tension system on lower part of the structure is applied in order to reduce the deflection and size of member. This study is performed with conforming of the effect by pretension value in the cable and applying loading. Dead and Live loads are supposed to apply nodal on the top member. The member force and deflection of the structure are with MIDAS and ADINA.

  • An under-tension system is frequently employed for large-span structures to reduce the deflection and member size. In this study, a microgenetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cross-section of truss structures with an undertension cable under transverse loading. Maximum deflection, allowable stress, and buckling were considered constraints. The proposed approach was verified using a 10-bar truss sample that shows good agreement with the previous results. In the numerical results, minimum-weight design of the under-tension structure was performed for various magnitudes of pretension.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation of the structural performance of a large-span girder bridge with an under-tension system. Typical long-span structures with beam and girder members have greater structural member depths and sizes to carry the moment and deflection. An under-tension system can be an effective structural system, as it allows the cables to resist some portions of the vertical loadings and deflections. To evaluate the serviceability and ultimate strength of the under-tension system, two $10m{\times}2.4m$ experimental under-tension systems were built and tested. One was developed with an H-beam section, and the other was made with a PF500 section that had the advantages of fast construction and lower construction cost. In the test, the maximum deflections at the mid-point of both beams were effectively reduced using under-tension systems. Also, the increased tension forces in the cable reduced the deflections. The PF500 members, which had a new shape and were developed using the module systems, performed better than the typical H-beam sections in terms of the deflections and ultimate strength.

  • This study presents deflection analysis of long span structures for pedestrian bridge on crossroads. For long span structures, the size of structural members should be determined considering the esthetic view and vehicle below the structures. As a result, the slenderness ratio of members is increased and the structure may be suffered from significant deflection. The under-tensioned system on lower part of the structure, is applied in order to reduce the deflection and the size of members. In this regard, the under-tensioned system enables the load of upper parts to carη to the end of beam by means of tensional force in cable. In addition, effectiveness of under-tensioned system can be different depending on the size of cable, the number and spacing of posts. This study is performed with conforming the effect by analytical various parameters (size of cable, number and spacing of post). Dead and live loads is supposed to apply in the slab, and the analytical result by MIDAS program are presented addressing the effect of the under-tensioned system.

  • This study showed that experimental study of inelastic nonlinear behavior of two-way beam string structures. General large span structures consisting of beam members have large moment and long cross section of area. In order to decrease these excessive moment and deflection, the two-way beam string structures composed of H-Beam, strut, and cable elements were proposed. In the two-way string beam, the cable with the prestress improves force distribution of some weight reduction. Two systems made of structural steel and cables were tested. The nonlinear behaviour of the two-way beam string structures studied by using finite element model and compared to experimental results. The displacement of the LVDT in the center of the beam correspond with the ABAQUS results. 2,200MPa cable can afford to bear breaking load than 1,860MPa cable. The two-way beam string structures is correlated to the finite element model and the experimental results. In consequence, It showed that the system with two-way cables exhibits much better structural performances than H-Beam structures and beam with cable.
