  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate parent expectation and satisfaction with respect to pediatric inpatient care and to identify the variables related to parent satisfaction. Methods: The study was conducted in pediatric wards of a tertiary children's hospital in Korea. The participants were 361 parents of children who were inpatients. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire (The Pediatric Family Satisfaction Questionnaire) at the time of discharge. Results: The highest parent expectation domain was medical service. The parents were most satisfied with nursing service and least satisfied with general hospital service and accommodation. The parents expressed lower satisfaction with hospital facilities, equipment, noise, cleanliness, and communication by health care professionals. Parents with younger children reported higher expectation from the complete hospital service and those who had a longer length of stay reported higher expectation from the nursing service. Conclusion: To improve the quality of hospital services, we need to understand parent expectation and improve and provide clear communication. In addition, the general hospital service and accommodation should not be overlooked for improvement.

Except medical facilities, the environmental element-children's emotional security and mental development-were often been ignored. The waiting space is a place for the formation of the impression of hospital and the important space of spatial constitution for emotional security. It is necessary to provide a friendly environment for children. Previous studies showed there are three factors that affected healing environment in children's hospitals' waiting space: physical, psychological and conduct. The result showed that Chinese children's hospitals performed better in physical factor, but lack of psychological and conduct factor based on the case study of 6 children's hospitals in Beijing. In order meet the needs of patients and protectors better, the main purpose of this study is provide the suggestion for improving the healing environment from the perspective of design.

  • Jaundice in children have various etiologies. Among them, physiological jaundice is a very common disease observed in more than half of full-term neonates. When jaundice persists or develops after 2 weeks of age, the total/direct bilirubin is measured in consideration of the possibility of cholestasis. In case of cholestasis, imaging studies differentiate biliary atresia and other disorders of the extrahepatic bile ducts. In this review, we briefly presented the major differential diseases of cholestasis in children and introduced diagnostic imaging techniques, including normal findings.

  • Pyogenic spondylitis, an extremely rare complication of nontyphoidal Salmonella infection in immunocompetent children, occurs more commonly in patients with hemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell disease or in immunocompromised patients. In this study, we report a case of pyogenic spondylitis in a previously healthy 13-year-old immunocompetent adolescent, who presented with prolonged fever and right upper quadrant pain. Stool culture results comfirmed nontyphoidal Salmonella infection, and the patient was diagnosed with pyogenic spondylitis caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella based on additional imaging studies performed for evaluation of the patient's prolonged fever. This case highlights the importance of culture studies for evaluation of patients with fever of unknown origin and also the importance of detailed investigations for early detection of complications of extra-intestinal infections in patients with an unusual clinical course of salmonellosis.
