  • The fish community of small freshwater ecosystems gets easily disturbed by direct or indirect human induced disturbances during the period of urbanization. Urbanization is one of factors that generate changes in stream and influences fish fauna in developed countries. This study was conducted in Busan Metropolitan City from 2001 to 2004. In order to investigate the fish community, the city was divided into 3 parts, eastern, central and western. A total of 3,206 individuals of 46 species from 19 families were collected from 55 sites. The dominant species was Rhynchocypris oxycephalus, whereas Zacco temminckii was the subdominant species. Cluster analysis was conducted using primary freshwater fish species collected from each stream. As a result of the analysis, study sites were well differentiated into 3 parts. Two species of Z. temminckii and R. oxycephalus represented the upper part of the stream and Carassius cuvieri, Acheilognathus rhombeus, Hemiculter eigenmanni and Micropterus salmoides represented the middle and lower parts of the stream. When compared with previous studies, fish community of the eastern part of the Busan city where urbanization is in progress, showed similar patterns to the central part. At the time of the habitat restoration of fish fauna in stream, appropriate selection of fish species should be made through analysis of stream character and biogeographic distribution of fish, and long-term monitoring is also needed for sustaining the management of fish fauna.

  • Ecological instream flow was quantitatively calculated based on the river characteristics and fish habitat in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir. The river bed and width did not change from 1988 before the am construction to 2004 after the dam construction, but the bed sediment size was attenuated a little in 2004. According to result that investigate fishes, 4 family 11 species including Acheilognathus koreensis were collected. Among them, Zacceo koreanus of cyprinidae was dominant, and Coreoleuciscus splendidus did sub-dominant. The habitat suitability indexes were estimated for two fish species Zacco koreanus and Coreoleuciscus splendidus using Physical Habitat Simulation System (PHABSIM) considering the river characteristics. In Gamdong and Daeti sites, the optimal ecological flow for Z. koreanus and C. splendidus were $13.90\sim12.60\;m^3\;s^{-1}$ and $15.50\sim11.60\;m^3\;s^{-1}$, respectively. In contrast, the optimal flow for the two species in Bunam site were $7.00\;m^3\;s^{-1}$. The ecological instream flow in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir was between normal and high flow rate.

  • Total of 325 estuaries in Korea were surveyed to analyze the effect of presence of sluice gate on the estuary environment and fish community from 2016 to 2018. Fish community in closed and open estuaries showed differences generally, and the relative abundance (RA) of primary freshwater species in the closed and migratory species in the open estuaries were high. The result of classifying species by habitat characteristics in closed and open estuaries showed similar tendencies at the estuaries of south sea and west sea. The relative abundances of primary freshwater species in the closed estuaries at the estuaries of south sea and west sea were the highest, but estuarine and migratory species were high in both closed and open estuaries at the estuaries of east sea. Primary freshwater species showed higher abundances in the closed estuaries with reduced salinity due to blocking of seawater since they are not resistant to salt. However, primary freshwater species in open estuaries at east sea was higher than that of the closed estuaries, which is considered to be the result of reflecting the characteristics (tide, sand bar, etc.) of the east sea. Korea Estuary Fish Assessment Index (KEFAI) was showed to be higher at open estuaries than closed in all sea areas (T-test, P<0.001), the highest KEFAI was observed in closed estuaries at south sea, and open estuaries in east sea. Fish community of closed and open estuaries in each sea areas showed statistically significant differences (PERMANOVA, East, Pseudo-F=3.0198, P=0.002; South, Pseudo-F=22.00, P=0.001; West, Pseudo-F=14.067, P=0.001). Fish assemblage similarity by sea areas showed a significant differences on fish community in closed and open estuaries at east sea, south sea, and west sea (SIMPER, Group dissimilarity, 85.85%, 88.36%, and 88.05%). This study provided information on the characteristics and distribution of fish community according to the types of estuaries. The results of this study can be used as a reference for establishing appropriate management plans according to the sea areas and type in the management and restoration of estuaries for future.

  • In a cyber aquarium, the behavior of fish objects is the most important factor in respect of visual effects. In this paper, we analyze the principal habits of fish objects such as the vitality, the range of movement, the maximum depth of water they can live, and the cycle of eating. Then, we suggest a method for simulating the stable marine ecosystem with controlling the behaviors, the interaction with other species, the average span of life, and all that sort of thing based on the result of analysis. Because we can freely modify the behavior of fish object by altering the values of attributes, it can be utilized in the dynamic cyber aquarium, the 3D aquarium screen saver, and the cyber fish game, and so on.
