First Record of the Sleek Unicornfish, Naso hexacanthus (Acanthuridae, Perciformes) from Korea (한국산 양쥐돔과(농어목) 어류 1미기록종, Naso hexacanthus)

  • A single specimen (351.1 mm SL) of the sleek unicornfish, Naso hexacanthus, belonging to Acanthuridae was firstly collected from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. The species is characterized by having brownish vertical bands on the dorsal fin and two pale purple bony plates on caudal peduncle. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, "Nam-bang-pyo-mun-jwi-chi."

  • The Yellowfin surgeonfish, Acanthurus xanthopterus was reported as the first confirmed record from Korea based on a single specimen (332.6 mm SL) collected from the coast from Geomundo Island. It is characterized by having a longitudinal yellowish band in front of eye, dorsal and anal fins with 4 bluish stripes, and broad yellowish bar distally on pectoral fin. The new Korean name, "No-rang-munui-yang-jwi-dom", is proposed for the species.

  • A single specimen (213.5 mm SL) of the epaullete surgeonfish, Acanthurus nigricauda Dunker and Mohr, belonging to the family Acanthuridae was collected by a set net in coastal waters of Busan, Korea. The species has a distinctive dark band above pectoral fin and on mid-lateral part of caudal peduncle. We describe this species as new to Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, "Yang-jwi-dom".

  • A rare species of unicornfishes, Naso lituratus (Schneider) was recently collected from coastal waters in Cheju-do, Korea. This species was described and figured as first record from Korea. A key of three species belonging to the genus Naso from Korea is presented.
