Catalytic Performance of Iron-Based Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts Promoted by $SiO_2$ Using Different Sources ($SiO_2$ 원료물질에 따른 Fischer-Tropsch 합성반응용 Fe계 촉매의 성능변화)

  • Fe계 촉매는 FT(Fischer-Tropsch) 합성반응에 매우 유망한 촉매로 주목받고 있으며, $280^{\circ}C$ 미만의 저온 FT 합성반응의 경우, 침전법이 Fe계 촉매의 가장 전형적인 제조방법으로 알려져 있다. Fe계 촉매에 첨가되는 조촉매로는 Cu, K, $SiO_2$ 등이 가장 대표적이며, 이 중에서 특히 구조 조촉매로 첨가되는 $SiO_2$는 Fe계 촉매의 기계적 강도를 향상시킬 뿐만 아니라, 촉매의 성능에도 크게 영향을 미치는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 침전법을 이용하여 저온 FT 합성반응용 Fe계 촉매를 제조하였고, 구조 조촉매로 첨가한 $SiO_2$의 원료물질에 따른 Fe계 촉매의 성능변화를 조사하였다. $SiO_2$의 원료물질로는 콜로이드 $SiO_2$와 분말 $SiO_2$를 이용하였으며, 분말 $SiO_2$를 이용한 촉매가 콜로이드 $SiO_2$를 이용한 촉매보다 다소 높은 CO 전환율 및 중질탄화수소 선택도를 나타내는 것을 확인하였다.

  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was carried out in heat-exchanger typed reactor with cobalt metallic foam catalyst. Considering the heat and mass transfer limitations in the cobalt catalyst, a Co-foam catalyst with an inner metallic foam frame and an outer cobalt catalyst was developed. The Co-foam catalyst was highly selective toward liquid hydrocarbon production and the liquid hydrocarbon productivity at $203^{\circ}C$ reached to $52.5ml/(kg_{cat}{\cdot}h)$, which was higher than that obtained by the Co-pellet. Furthermore, the heat-exchanger typed reactor was developed to efficiently control the highly exothermic reaction heat. The reaction heat generated in the FTS reaction on the cobalt active site was easily transferred to reactor wall by the metallic foam in the catalyst and the transferred reaction heat was directly removed by the hot oil which circulated the wall side of the heat-exchanger typed reactor.

  • Hydraulic performance test was conducted for a fuel pump of a liquid rocket engine turbopump. The pump driven by an electric motor was tested in water environment. It is experimentally shown that the inducer had very small effect on the pimp's head and efficiency but great effect on the pump's cavitation performance. Additionally, inducer test was carried out to investigate the effect of the inducer on the pump in detail, and it was found that the pump had a critical cavitation number when the inducer head dropped by $55\%$.

  • Precipitated iron-based catalysts are highly promising for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), in particular for the low temperature FTS below $280^{\circ}C$, because of their high activity and low cost. $SiO_2$ is an essential promoter for the precipitated iron-based catalysts to improve the attrition strength and physical stability. In this study, we carried out FTS over precipitated iron-based catalysts with and without $SiO_2$ in a fixed-bed reactor. The catalysts were prepared by a conventional co-precipitation method. In case of the catalysts with $SiO_2$, we used two comparative preparation methods, i.e., incorporation of $SiO_2$ before precipitation (denoted as precipitated $SiO_2$) and after precipitation (denoted as binder $SiO_2$), respectively. The addition of $SiO_2$ crucially affects both physico-chemical properties and catalytic peformance of precipitated iron-based catalysts.

  • A series of hydraulic tests of a fuel pump are performed using water at a room temperature. The pump is under development for 75-ton class liquid rocket engines of the open-loop gas generator type. According to the test results, the fuel pump satisfies its design requirement and its head and efficiency at the design flowrate are higher than the expected value by the computational analysis. Also, it is found that the pressure at the rear bearing outlet is higher than expected because the inlet of bypass pipe line is narrow. Furthermore, the flowrate of the secondary flow is estimated using the pressure difference of the elbow of the bypass pipe line.

  • Three Lox pumps and one fuel pump are manufactured for turbopump real-propellent tests and water tests of the pumps are performed in order to estimate the performance characteristics of the pumps. According to the test results, the test region(flow ratio, cavitation number) of the pumps at the water tests cover the operating region at the real-propellent tests and also all the pumps satisfy the design requirement. The head of the Lox pumps shows a 2% difference among them due to the internal geometry, but the efficiency and overall cavitation performance are almost same. It is found that the fuel pump has a similar head and efficiency compared with the previous model of the same internal geometry, while it has a little inferior cavitation performance.

  • As an effective means to convey crushed materials from seabed to onboard ship and to raise hazardous or abrasive liquids, air-lift pump provides a reliable mechanism due to its simple configuration and easy-to-operate principle. The present study is focused on investigation of related performance by the analysis program based on the gas-liquid two-phase flow in circular pipes. The program covers pump operating in isothermal and vertical two-phase flow with Newtonian liquids. It is summarized as important result that an optimum air mass flow rate exists for the maximum lifted liquid mass flow rate in terms of a given submergence rates. The comparison between riser performance of the conveyed liquid flow rate calculated by the computer program and measured data with large scale air lift pump system constructed in 200 meter depth vertical tank reveals similar distribution.

  • Steady flow bench test is a practical, powerful and widely used test in most engine manufacturers to give a design concept of a new engine. In order to use steady data as a performance index, it is necessary to build some database, which can correlate the port characteristics with engine data. However, it is very hard to investigate all port and valve shapes with experimental tools. The steady flow scheme is relatively simple and its results are bulk ones such as flow rate and momentum of flow. Therefore a CFD code can be easily applied to the port evaluation. In this study, the steady flow test was simulated through two and three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. For this purpose, the effect of valve curvature on flow rate was estimated by a CFD code. There results were compared with those of real steady flow tests. As a result, the 2-D analysis described the phenomena qualitatively well, and also the results of 3-D analysis were almost consistent with experimental data.
