  • A series of hydraulic tests of a fuel pump are performed using water at a room temperature. The pump is under development for 75-ton class liquid rocket engines of the open-loop gas generator type. According to the test results, the fuel pump satisfies its design requirement and its head and efficiency at the design flowrate are higher than the expected value by the computational analysis. Also, it is found that the pressure at the rear bearing outlet is higher than expected because the inlet of bypass pipe line is narrow. Furthermore, the flowrate of the secondary flow is estimated using the pressure difference of the elbow of the bypass pipe line.

  • Three Lox pumps and one fuel pump are manufactured for turbopump real-propellent tests and water tests of the pumps are performed in order to estimate the performance characteristics of the pumps. According to the test results, the test region(flow ratio, cavitation number) of the pumps at the water tests cover the operating region at the real-propellent tests and also all the pumps satisfy the design requirement. The head of the Lox pumps shows a 2% difference among them due to the internal geometry, but the efficiency and overall cavitation performance are almost same. It is found that the fuel pump has a similar head and efficiency compared with the previous model of the same internal geometry, while it has a little inferior cavitation performance.

  • Hydrodynamic performance test was conducted for a fuel pump of a liquid rocket engine turbopump. The pump driven by an electric motor was tested using water. It is experimentally shown that the inducer had very small effect on the pump's head and efficiency but great effect on the pump's cavitation performance. Additionally, inducer test was carried out to investigate the effect of the inducer on the pump in detail, and it was found that the pump reached a critical cavitation number when the inducer head dropped by 55%.

  • Freshwater may be injected into aquifers to combat sea water intrusion in groundwater or to store water for later retrieval. For these cases to achieve the desired goal groundwater modeling is commonly used to determine locations and rates of injection wells. When these wells are connected to a pipe network, a flow control valve is installed for each well to regulate the injection rate. When a valve opening is modified, pressure changes in the entire pipe network and thereby changes flow rates in other wells. Therefore, desired valve openings must be determined for all injection wells. The pipe flow analysis allows estimation of the minimum pump power in addition to valve openings. Methods are developed to identify valve openings for multiple wells and the minimum pump power. The methodology developed in this work can contribute to precise operation of multiple injection wells.

  • In the systems with largely pipe head loss, variable speed pumps are generally used because substantial energy saving can be expected from such systems by controlling pump speed and also they offer simpler maintenance and operational ease even in conditions where abrupt changes In flow rate and head can occur. The invertor or the fluid coupling system are mainly adopted to control the rotating speed. In this paper, operating conditions at Migum pressing pump station(5 stage), where the fluid coupling system was the first installed for KOWACO, are investigated and analysed so that information thus gained can be usefully employed in the efficient operation of variable speed pump in new installations of in-line booster pumping station.

  • Flow analysis was carried out for two vertical pumps. The geometrical difference of two pumps is the adoption of vaned diffuser. Full pump models were used to simulate the velocity fields of the pumps. Pump head and velocity field were compared to obtain the features of diffuser flow. It was shown that the discontinuity of head curve was predicted and reverse flow could be generated at impeller exit even in the rated flow condition.

  • A Numerical study of the cavitation within a centrifugal pump is carried out using CFD commercial code, FLUENT. The objective of this study is to predict the onset of cavitation within the pump blade and the degradation in the pressure rise due to the generation and transport of vapor. A pump designed for the study is a six bladed, one-circular arc impeller design suggested by A.J. Stepanoff et al. The Steady-state calculations are performed for a wide range of flow rate without the cavitation to investigate the pump performance. The design head and efficiency show a very good agreement with the numerical results at the design flow rate. After the validation with the numerical results, the pump performance and the onset of cavitation within the blade is predicted by changing NPSH at the design flow rate.

  • The ballast tank of a ship is a system that realizes the required shipping condition and controls the draft of a ship. The loading/unloading of the ballast tank is frequently operated during navigation and the accurate prediction of the loading/unloading time is very important. A numerical algorithm that predicts the loading/unloading time of the ballast tank has been developed and applied to the prediction of the loading/unloading time of the ballast tank with various piping systems. This algorithm can be useful in optimizing the ballast tank system in early design stage.

  • A commercial CFD code is used to calculate the 3-D viscous flow field within the centrifugal pump impeller. Design conditions are changed by impeller inlet(9.3mm, 12.2mm) and outlet breadth(6.65mm, 6.85mm). Numerical calculation was performed by changing flow rate from 8 to 26m$^{3}$/hr. Computation results shows that total head is increased at the larger inlet and outlet breadth than the others. And when the flow rate is increasing, the total head was decreased. The maximum efficiency of pump is shown at the design flow rate(16m$^{3}$/hr). In this study shows that the calculated results are good agreements with analysis results of design condition.

  • Flow Coefficients of intake port in an engine cylinder head were measured by a newly designed flow rig. In measuring the flow coefficient with traditional method, the valve lift was manually varied by technician with adjusting a micrometer which is directly connected to the intake valve of the cylinder head. The cam shaft of the cylinder head is directly rotated by a step motor and the valve lift was automatically varied with cam shaft profile in the newly designed flow rig. The measurement of the flow coefficient was automated by rotating the cam shaft with the step motor. Automatic measurement of the flow coefficient could be safely measured by separating a technician from the noise and vibration of the traditional flow rig. Also, the automatic measurement of the flow coefficient reduce the measurement time and provide meaningful statistical data.
