Applicability of Natural Zeolite with Different Cation Exchange Capacity as In-situ Capping Materials for Adsorbing Heavy Metals (중금속 흡착을 위한 원위치 피복소재로서 천연제올라이트의 양이온교환용량에 따른 적용성 평가)

  • We investigated the efficiency of natural zeolite with different cation exchange capacity (CEC) as capping material for the remediation of marine sediments contaminated with heavy metals. Three different zeolite with high CEC (HCzeo, 163.74 cmolc/kg), medium CEC (MCzeo, 127.20 cmolc/kg), and low CEC (LCzeo, 70.62 cmolc/kg) were used. The surface area of the zeolite was in decreasing order: HCzeo ($59.43m^2/g$) > MCzeo ($52.10m^2/g$) > LCzeo ($10.12m^2/g$). The results of mineralogical composition obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that LCzeo was mainly composed of quartz and albite. In the XRD result of MCzeo and HCzeo, the peaks of clinoptilolite, heulandite, and mordenite were also observed along with that of quartz and albite. Sorption equilibrium onto the HCzeo, MCzeo, and LCzeo was reached in 6 h at initial concentration of 10 mg/L and 100 mg/L. Higher adsorption of Cd and Zn onto the zeolite with higher CEC were achieved but adsorption of Cu and Ni were not dependent on the CEC of zeolite. It can be concluded that the zeolite with high cation exchange ability is recommended for the contaminated sediments with Cd and Zn but the inexpensive zeolite with low CEC for Cu and Ni.

Removal of Radioactive Ions from Contaminated Water by Ion Exchange Resin (오염된 물로부터 이온교환수지를 이용한 방사성이온 제거)

  • In this study, we used three kinds of commercially available cation, anion, and mixed-ion exchange resins to separate radioactive ions from a polluted water containing Cs, I, and other radioactive ions. The experiment was conducted at a room temperature with a batch method, and a comparative analysis on the decontamination ability of each resin for the removal of Cs and I was performed by using different quantities of resins. The concentration was analyzed using ion chromatography and the ion exchange resin product from company D showed an overall high ion exchange ability. However, for most of the experiments when the amount of ion exchange resin was decreased, the decontamination ability of the resins against mass increased. When the mass of company D's cation exchange resin was small, the ion exchange ability against Cs and I ions were measured as 0.199 and 0.344 meq/g, respectively. When the mixed ion exchange resin was used, the ion exchange ability against I ions was measured as 0.33 meq/g. All in all, company D's ion exchange resins exhibited a relatively higher ion exchange ability particularly against I ions than that of other companies' exchange ions.

  • Adsorption characteristics of Ni(II), Co(II) and Ag(I) ions on the Amberite IRN 77 cation exchange resin have been studied to suggest the guide-line for the optimum operation of demineralization process in primary coolant system during the shut-down period of pressurized water reactor(PWR). The adsorption mechanism of each metal ion, Ni(II), Co(II) or Ag(I) ion, on a cation exchange resin was well coincided with Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption and treatment capacities of $H^+$-form resin were higher than those of $Li^+$-form resin. In the continuous ion exchange process for the solution of multi-component system, the selectivity of the resin was in increasing order of Ni(II)${\approx}$Co(II)>Ag(I). In addition, the increase of the flow rate decreased the treatment capacity of the resin as well as the slope of the breakthrough curve.

  • The object of this study was to investigate the influence of composition and concentration of electrolyte, ratio of cation to anion exchange resin of mixed ion exchange column in the performance of ion exchange. Also this work examined the removal capability of suspended solids by ion exchange resin and the effect of particule on the characteristics of ion exchange. Breakthrough time was extended as the amount of ions and particles present in liquid was decreased. The case of anion, the breakthrough sequence is $Cl^{-}, but the case of cation, the breakthrough sequence is $Na^{+}. As for the ratio of cation to anion exchange resin of 1:2, the breakthrough time was prolonged compared with that of 1:1 and 1:3. For the electrolyte of equal concentration containing suspended solid, breakthrough time was contracted less than 20%. It results in the increase in the removal capacity of cation exchange resin. For the higher ratio of cation exchange resin, suspended solids are shorten the cation's breakthrough time so that the runtime of ion exchange resin tower is increased.

  • Cation exchange membrane (Nafion) was modified to reduce the vanadium ion permeation through the membrane and to increase the vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) system performance by coating the graphene oxide (GO) which has nano-plate like morphology. Modified membrane properties were studied by measuring the ion exchange capacity (I.E.C), water uptake and proton conductivity. The thickness of the coated layer on the surface of the Nafion membrane was observed as $0.93{\mu}m$ by SEM. Proton conductivity and vanadium ion permeability of the modified membrane were decreased to 27% and 25% compared to that of the commercial Nafion membrane respectively. VRB single cell performance test was performed to compare the system performance of the VRB applied with commercial Nafion membrane and modified membrane. VRB system applied with modified membrane showed higher coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency than the VRB system applied with the commercial Nafion membrane due to the reduction of the vanadium ion permeation. From these result, we could suggest that the membrane modification by coating the GO on the surface of the Nafion membrane could be one of the promising strategies to reduce the vanadium ion permeation and to increase the VRB system performance effectively.

Synthesis of Multifunctional AN-co-(MMA/IA) Fibrous ion-exchanger by Hydrolysis and Adsorption Properties for Trace Transition Elements (가수분해에 의한 AN-co-(MMA(IA) 다관능성 섬유이온교환체의 합성 및 미랑 전이금속 흡착특성)

  • In In order to remove harmful trace elements such as $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ , $Cr_2O_7\;^{2-}$ from water, we synthesized AN-co-(MMA/IA) according to various mole ratio of monomers and spun by wet-spinning. And multi-functional PAN ion exchangers were prepared by hydrolysis. We observed structure, degree of functionalization, ion exchange capacity, distribution coefficient and mechanical properties for ion exchanger. Anion exchange capacity decreased in 4.5 ~ 4.2 meq/g with increasing of IA content and cation exchange capacity increased in 1.8 ~ 2.2 meq/g. Tensile strength of the ion exchanger increased up to 0.008 mol% IA content and appeared maximum value by 216$kg/cm^2$Distribution coefficient for AN-co-(MMA/IA) ion exchanger appeared maximum value for Co(II), Ni(II) in pH 5-6 range and for Cr(III) in pH 3-4 range. And the adsorption capacity was in the order of Cr(III) > Co(II) > Ni(II) for multicomponent in continuous process.

  • Continuous ion exchange characteristics of the synthetic coolant contained Ni, Co and Ag ions of low concentration in acidic-oxidizing conditions have been studied to suggest the guideline for the optimum operation of mixed-bed demincralizer during the shutdown period of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). In the effect of the form of cation resins on the removal capacity of metal ions, the performance of a $H^+$-form resin was about 6% higher than that of a $Li^+$-form resin. Mixed-bed of cation and anion resins in comparison with nonmixed-bed of them, had no affected on the removal capacity of metal ions but very slightly increased the slope of breakthrough curves of metal ions. In the effect related to acidic-oxidizing conditions of the coolant, the addition of boric acid very slightly decreased the slope of breakthrough curves of metal ions, while the addition of hydrogen peroxide slightly decreased the removal capacity of metal ions.

  • The study was evaluated and compared to commercial heterogeneous membrane in order to make cation exchange membrane set up the optimal preparing condition. The research findings show that ion exchange resin was added more than 40 wt% in order to show chemical properties of HPVDF higher than commercial heterogeneous membrane. But ion exchange resin was added less than 40 wt% in order to show mechanical properties of HPVDF higher than commercial heterogeneous membrane. According to conditions above, Electrical resistance was $1.83{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$, water uptake was 79%, ion exchange capacity was 1.60 meq/g, and burst strength was 0.97 MPa. Also The TDS remove efficiency was measured by approximately 40%.

The Characteristic Calculation of a Phosphoric Acid Ion Exchanger using the Potentiometric Titration (전위차 적정법을 이용한 인산형 양이온교환수지의 특성 계산)

  • We calculated the characteristics of a phosphoric cation exchanger and studied on an accurately computable method to determine the ion exchange capacity for type of potentiometric titration curve. The ion exchanger was prepared by phosphorylation of a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with 4% crosslinking. The ion exchange capacity is 5.7 meq/g. The experimental pK values versus ${\mathit{x}}$ in phosphoric cation exchanger can be expressed as a linear equation. The ${\Delta}pK$ values were obtained from the slope of linear equation. The ${\Delta}pK$ values are the differences of antilogarithms(pK) values of the apparent equilibrium constant at complete and zeroth neutralization of the ion exchanger. Also the experimental pK values at ${\mathit{x}}=0.5$ were accorded well with theoretical data. And when it is titrated with NaOH and $Ba(OH)_2$ solutions, a good agreement between experimental and theoretical pK values for various ${\mathit{x}}$ was seen in all the potentiometric titration curves. We knew that the inflection point of potentiometric titration curve in the case of divalent ions are changed much large than that for monovalent ions. If the relation between g values and ${\partial}pH/{\partial}g$ was plotted to the Lorentz distribution curve, ion exchange capacity can be accurately evaluated.

  • The multifunctional cation exchangers, sulfonated polypropylene-g-(acrylic acid/styrene) [PP-g-(AAc/Sty)] were synthesized by the irradiational grafting of AAc and Sty onto PP staple fabric with electron beam accelerator and its subsequent sulfonation. The highest degree of grafting obtained was 190% at a monomer mixture of 30 vol% AAc: 70 vol% Sty and a solvent mixture of 30 vol% water : 70 vol% methanol and the degree of grafting decreased with an increase of the AAc content in the monomer mixture at constant solvent content. Maximum ion exchange capacity of the copolymer was 4.6 meq/g. The Li$^{+}$ adsorption ability of the copolymer synthesized in the study was the best among PP-g- AAc, sulfonated PP-g-Sty, and sulfonated PP-g-(AAc/Sty).).
