Reduction smelting of spent lithium-ion batteries at high temperature produces metallic alloys. Following solvent extraction of the leaching solutions of these metallic alloys with either sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, the raffinate is found to contain Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Si(IV). In this study, two cationic exchange resins (Diphonix and P204) were employed to investigate the loading behavior of these ions from synthetic sulfate and chloride solutions. Experimental results showed that Ni(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) could be selectively loaded onto the Diphonix resin from a sulfate solution of pH 3.0. With a chloride solution of pH 6.0, Mn(II) was selectively loaded onto the P204 resin, leaving Ni(II) and Si(IV) in the effluent. Elution experiments with H2SO4 and/or HCl resulted in the complete recovery of metal ions from the loaded resin.

It is difficult to treat wastewater involved in heavy metal in electroplating industry. Recently, many industries adopt the clean technology to prevent production of pollutant in the process or reuse after the appropriate pollutant treatment. In this study, we estimate the ability of recovery of nickel and the efficiency using lab-scale ion exchange and electrodialysis process with electroplating industry wastewater. In the ion exchange experiments with 5 types of resin, the result showed that S 1467(gel-type strong acidic cation exchange resin) has the highest exchange capacity. And it showed that the 4 N HCl has the highest in regeneration efficiency and maximum concentration in the regeneration experiments with various kinds md concentration of the regenerant. During the electrodialysis experiments, we varied the current density, the concentration of electrode rinse solution, the flow rate of concentrate and electrode rinse solution in order to find the optimum operating condition. As a result, we obtained $250A/m^2$ of current density, 2 N $H_2SO_4$ of concentration of electrode rinse solution, 30 mL/min of flow rate of concentrate and electrode rinse solution as the best operating conditions. We performed the scale-up experiments on the basis of ion exchange and electrodialysis experiments. And we obtained the experimental result that exchange capacity of S 1467 was 1.88 eq/L resin, and regeneration efficiency was 93.7% in the ion exchange scale-up experiment, we also got the result that concentration and dilution efficiency increased, and current efficiency kept constant in the scale-up experiments.

Ion exchange is a chemical reaction between the ions in solution phase and ions in solid phase and is widely used in softening, demineralization, removal and collection of specific ions, and ion migration in the ground water. The ion selectivity depends on the charge and the hydrated radius of ion. The objective of this study was to examine the applicability of anion selectivity obtained from the ion exchange equilibrium OH/sup -/ < F/sup -/ < HCO/sup -/ < Cl/sup -/ < Br/sup -/ ≤ NO₃/sup -/ < SO₄/sup 2-/ to the column ion exchange. The column ion exchange was facilitated in the lower charge of counter-ion in the background electrolyte.
The adsorption of nickel(Ni) from sulfuric acid solution was carried out by ion exchange method. A series of batch tests in synthetic solutions were carried out using Lewatit Monoplus TP 220 resin. The following experimental parameters, such as temperature, shaking rate, reaction time, pH, resin dosage and concentration of nickel ions etc. were investigated to establish the effective optimum conditions of nickel adsorption. The solution pH(2.0~5.0) and shaking rate had little effects on the adsorption of nickel and adsorption time of 72hours was required to reach equilibrium. The experimental results show a good agreement with Feundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order reaction. The adsorption behavior of Ni obtained from synthetic solution was compared with that of waste electroplating solution. Elution of nickel from loaded resin increased with increase in $H_2SO_4$ concentration.

A determination method of trace nickel and cobalt in water samples was studied and developed by adsorbing their complexes on ion exchange resin suspension. The analytical ions were formed as complexes with a ligand of APDC (ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate) and adsorbed on anion exchange resin of Dowex 2-X8. After the suspension was filtered out with membrane filter, the complexes were dissolved in HCl solution by an ultrasonic vibrator for ET-AAS determination. Several conditions were optimized as followings. pH of sample solution: 5.0, amount of ligand APDC: more than 430 times in mole ratio, the type and concentration of acid: 0.1 M HCl, and vibration time: 7 minutes. The addition of palladium in the HCl solution could improve the reproducibility and sensitivity by a matrix modification in the absorbance measurement. This procedure was applied for the analysis of three kinds of real water samples. The detection limits equivalent to 3 times standard deviation of blank were Co 0.36 ng/mL and Ni 0.27 ng/mL and recoveries in spiked samples were 99-102% for cobalt and 100-105% for nickel.
The indigestible dextrin with high indigestible fraction was prepared by treating the enzyme hydrolysate of pyrodextrin with ethanol or strongly acidic cation exchange resin(UBK 530). Optimum conditions of ethanol treatment for preparing the indigestible dextrin from $\alpha-amylase$ and amyloglucosidase treated hydrolysate were determined based on the indigestible fraction, dietary fiber content, and yield. Ethanol was added 5-fold by weight to 30%(w/w) enzyme hydrolysate, and the mixture was kept at room temperature for 3 hr. Low molecular weight saccharides containing glucose and high molecular weight saccharides were separated by strongly acidic cation exchange resin. While initial enzyme hydrolysate by $\alpha-amylase$ and amyloglucosidase showed 43.6% of DPI(glucose) and 51.1% of DP4+(maltotetraose and over), the indigestible dextrin collected to 50% of initial enzyme hydrolysate by treatment of cation exchange resin showed 7.1% of DPI(glucose) and 91.2% of DP4+(maltotetraose and over). In conclusion, 44.5% of indigestible fraction of initial enzyme hydrolysate increased to 78.9% after separation of low molecular weight saccharides.
In this work, we studied the degree of hydrolysis of ion exchanger in $NH_4OH$ solution and sorption characteristics of $NH_3$ by potentiometric titration curves with using carboxylic acid ion exchanger Fiban K-4. We knew that the theoretical pH values agreed with the experimental pH values on the $NH_4OH$ concentrations in various concentrations of supporting electrolyte $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The sorption values of $NH_3$ using the ion exchanger can be calculated from equivalent sorption curves for various pH. Also, the degree of hydrolysis increased with decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte and pH. In order to obtain the mono ion form below 0.01 M as the decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte, the pH values should be increased. From these results, therefore, the concentrations of supporting electrolyte and pH values were determined.
