The researchers conducted focus group interviews using the 'photovoice' method and individual interviews with a mothers' group of an orchestra whose members are youth with developmental disabilities. The data were qualitatively analyzed applying systematic content analysis. The results revealed that the lives of mothers of children with developmental disabilities were framed as 'keeping walking, even it's invisible', and their experiences were summed up by the phrase 'coming together and growing with their children.' Although the mothers of children with developmental disabilities experienced distress and difficulties, they also experienced joy and growth while parenting their children. Their children's participation in the orchestra were associated with changes in the mothers' perceptions of their children as well as their self-perceptions as caregivers, and the relationships with the support systems. Based on these findings, the implications of this study for social welfare practice were discussed.

  • This qualitative study is designed to explore parents' experiences with their children handicapped with restricted growth. The parents' unique reality and its essential meanings are elicited through in-depth interviews enabling to reflect the insider's perspective. "From the child unable to grow to the child able to grow" is identified as the main theme penetrating through the participants'parenting experiences unique to their reality. Embracing the shock and the disappointment related to their children 'unable to grow', they thrive to make their children able to grow. However, they eventually accept their children's handicap, in spite of never doing it easily, by getting confronted with the limits of making their children grow in stature, and the social stigma and the difficulty their children experience. Therefore, they get to take alternative perspectives not focusing on their children's stature unable to grow but on psycho-social growth able to grow. Social welfare plans to support the handicapped with restricted growth and their parents are suggested.

  • Despite the diverse system development and improvement initiatives that have been created to improve the environments of child birth and nurturing, the birth rate in Korean society remains low. Some minor teenage single parents give birth and raise children. Teenage single parents are supported by the Single-Parent Family Support Act, but some of their needs are still not being addressed. As each single parent has different backgrounds and socioeconomic characteristics, an investigation is required for developing differentiated support in which they will be considered both parents and children. Therefore, this study identifies the unique problems encountered by teenage parents, focuses on single mothers giving birth, and explores measures that teenage parents can use to be independent members of civil society. Three suggestions are presented for the period from pregnancy and childbearing to parenting. First, there should be an education support plan that will enable them to finish tertiary education, and parent education. Second, measures should be created to initiate a change in direction in indifferent biological(real) fathers: these should enlighten and help them participate in rearing their children. Third, in addition to improvements of the current systems only targeting single parent-family support, which will help differentiate teenage parent support from adolescent single parent-family support, assistance should be given for teenage single parents to grow as a Subject of Rights through tailored independent support programs.

The results of this study are as follows. First, the parental stress, parenting burden, and family members' difficulties were investigated. However, the research on the salary policy supported by the handicapped children has been scarce, and it has been found that the research on the service satisfaction of the main caregiver is also insufficient by the type of salary. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of variables (parents gender, child gender, parents age, child age, disability grade, average income) on service satisfaction. As a result, parents age, child age, and child gender showed statistically significant effects on service satisfaction. This resulted in statistically significant overall effects on the application process, economic burden, support and selection criteria, service volume, and overall satisfaction. Based on the results of the study, the implications for cash benefits and in-kind benefits could be improved by increasing the amount and scope of benefits, and customized services considering the age of the handicapped children, ultimately improving the service satisfaction of the main caregiver.
