Unlike the past several decades when over 90% of unwed mothers chose to adopt their children, the number of never-married mothers who determine to raise their children for themselves has recently been increasing. However, many unwed mothers are still suffering from a diversity of problems including poverty, discrimination and biased stereotypes. To this end, this study aims to observe the development process of social policy for unwed mothers in Korea, with a special focus on the policy paradigm shift, and examine current social services for never-married mothers and their children. The results of the study shows the paradigm shift of social policy for unwed mothers occurred around the mid-2000's towards helping never-married mothers rear their children. However, social services for them have not kept pace with the paradigm change, which makes still very much hard for unwed mothers to raise their kids on their own. The study concludes with policy implications for improving social services for families headed by never-married mothers.
This study aims to deeply understand the possible difficulties faced by a single-parent family raising a gifted child, based on the case of an Information Science gifted child raised under a single-parent family. For this purpose, there had been three interviews with the single mother who raises an elementary school gifted child on her own. As a result, it was discovered that a single mother raising an Information Science gifted child faces three difficulties that are the lack of educational support due to financial problems, deficiency in the absence of father, and facing social prejudice against a single-parent family. These three problems were similar to those faced by a single-parent raising an ordinary child, but there were slight differences due to the unique characteristics of an Information Science gifted child. Additionally, through the mentoring with the researcher, it was identified that in order to help these families, they need to be given personalized support for their specific defects.
This study examined poor custodial grandparents' life story and care-giving experiences of their grandchildren. 8 grandparents were selected and in-depth interview and participant observation method were used. They showed a miserable life from the birth and discriminative experience of the deprivation of educational opportunities as childhood nadir experiences. They showed the regret for their inability as youth/midlife low point and financial difficulty as old life nadir experiences. In terms of care-giving experiences of their grandchildren, they showed non-voluntary care-giving, anxiety for the generational continuation of hardship, and lack of familial assistance. Poor custodial grandparents also used family-centered value, community-based social assistance, and self-assurance through their sacrifice as their adjustment strategy. Several research themes such as the importance of basic trust in childhood, the experience of financial difficulties, the importance of community-based social assistance, and self-assurance through their sacrifice were suggested for further research.
With using a subsample of 1,373 poor single mothers and their children from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, the present study examined the associations among mothers' economic hardship, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress, child abuse and neglect, and their children's behavior problems, delinquency, and social skill. These families were tracked through follow-up interviews at the time of birth, and when the children were three, five, and nine years old. The results indicated that mothers' economic hardship, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress were significant predictors to determine their children's abuse and neglect. Findings also suggest that higher levels of child abuse and neglect are positively associated with more behavior problems and delinquency, and negatively associated with social skills. Further discussions include policy and services to prevent child abuse and neglect and to alleviate mothers' financial difficulties, depression, and parenting stress.
The purpose of this study was to investigate parenting experiences among grandmothers raising their grandchildren from grandmothers' perspective, and a variety of their physical health, psychological and social challenges they were facing in everyday life. In addition, this study explored new issues, changes, and difficulties grandparents and their grandchildren were going through during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven grandmothers raising their grandchildren without their cohabiting parents participated in an in-depth interview, and the qualitative date were obtained using semi-structured questionnaires. Analyses identified 5 main categories: 1) my emotion, worries, and coping with parenting grandchildren, 2) difficulties and obstacles facing in real life of the parenting, 3) conflicts and coping with growing grandchildren who showed new characters, 4) relationships and emotions among grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, and 5) needs and desires toward social services and support. Sixteen themes and 60 sub-themes were also derived. The majority of grandmothers expressed diverse difficulties in their dail y lives including ambivalent emotions regarding grandchild-rearing(rewards and burden), economic hardships, physical health limitations, and a lack of communications with their grandchildren. Further, findings indicated profound generation conflicts which had been even deepened during school close period in COVID-19 pandemic and had been associated with increased hours of using internet and playing computer games. The top priority of the social service needs among interviewed grandmothers was learning support for their grandchildren. Emotional support and social support to cover their lack of family interactions, and financial support were the next of their desired social services. Implications to improve social services for grandparent-headed families are discussed.
Based on phenomenological view a research utilizing qualitative methodology to understand about parenting difficulty and stress through an in-depth interview with grandmother in low-income grandparent-headed family was administrated. The results indicated that experience with parenting stress of grandmother in low-income grandparent-headed family lead to economic hardship, grandchildren who are a barrier of old-age, and desolate parenting. This article implicates that a basis to guide a direction and role of social welfare intervention to alleviate parenting stress of grandmother in grandparent-headed family and to improve a life quality emergent on the results could be provided. Several considerations on this finding shows as follows. First, with currently active support project re-monitored and re-checked, support program could be needed to enlarge. Second, support program development and social support to decrease parenting stress and depression of grandmother in grandparent-headed family could be necessary. With educational and cultural as well as mentoring program helpful for grandmother parenting designed, a support system to complement non-sufficient support network will be established together.

This study investigated the impact of social capital on married immigrant women's parenting, specifically focusing on the mediating effect of parenting participation. Using structural equation modeling, social capital within and outside of the family were examined in their relations to parenting efficacy, and the mediating effect of parenting participation was analysed. Study participants were 459 immigrant women from the Gyeonggi Education Welfare Panel(2011), who had children in 5th and 6th grades of elementary school. Findings suggested that social capital within and outside of the family had significant impact on parenting participation, which in turn affected parenting efficacy. Direct effects of social capital on parenting efficacy were not statistically significant, indicating a full mediation effect of parenting participation. Implications for social work practice and social policy for this population are discussed.
The purpose of this research is to investigate differences of governmental parts in social supports for unmarried mothers at home and those at facilities and to look at policy alternatives. Despite of the rising number of unmarried child rearing mothers in recent years, the governmental supports are not sufficient enough to aid even the most basic sustenance. The research on the governmental supports shows that unmarried child-rearing mothers at home were more aged, more employed, more educated and had children of more month ages than those at facilities. Single mothers at facilities were getting more governmental supports excluding crisis support and paternity test than those at home who appeared to be experiencing more difficulties. Based on the results from this research work, more realistic governmental policies are proposed to help a stable settlement of unmarried child-rearing mothers.
