  • Eveuadies 71' kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was grown at five plant densities (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 plants per hill; 16,000, 32,000, 48,000, 64,000 and 80,000 plants/10a) from April 13 to October 8, 2001 in Jeju island to determine influence of plant number per hill on agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality. As plant density increased from 1 to 5 plants per hill, the plant height averaged across two harvests increased 176 to 185 cm. Compared with the plant density of two plants per hill, the plant height decreased at higher plant densities (183, 180, and 166 cm for 3, 4 and 5 plants per hill). The highest yield of fresh forage (114.6 MT/ha), dry matter (17.3 MT/ha), crude protein (2.33 MT/ha), and total digestible nutrients (TDN) (9.21 MT/ha) was obtained at 2 plants per hill. As plant density increased from 1 to 5 plants per hill, crude protein, ether extract, nitrogen free extract, and TDN contents increased from 13.1 to 15.4%, 3.0 to 3.7%, 20.1 to 23.2% and 41.1 to 45.4%, respectively, while crude fiber and crude ash contents decreased from 41.2 to 34.9% and 9.4 to 8.2%, respectively.

  • Anatomical and physical properties of kenaf grown in Chuncheon, Korea were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction method. Bast fiber, phloem ray, cortex parenchyma cell and sieve tube member were observed in phloem, and vessel element, fiber and ray in xylem. Solitary and multiple radial pores in xylem existed. The cell types of ray parenchyma in radial section were procumbent, upright and square cells. The length of bast fiber increased with increasing the growth period. The length of wood fiber was 0.74~0.82 mm, but was not significantly different between the growth period and stem height. Relative crystallinity was 53~74% in phloem and 43~58% in xylem. Cellulose crystallinity width was 2.68~3.24 nm in phloem and 2.46~2.95 nm in xylem. The green moisture content and green density increased but basic density decreased with increasing the stem height.

  • In order of remove Cd by plants cultivation in the cadimum contamination soil, six fibers, four flowering and two sapling plants were cultivated at Cd treated soil, adjusted to 15 ppm. The Cd contents of plants and absorbed Cd concentration in plant, and residual Cd in soil were analyzed. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The Cd content in marigold was the highest, 161.7ppm, 22.5 times higher than rice. The Cd contents in plants was in the order of 58.3 ppm in sedge, 58.0 ppm in coreopsis, 43.5 ppm in sunflower, 38.3 ppm in scruber, and 31.9 ppm in flax. 2. The absorbed Cd in Popuaus alba x P. glandulosa was the highest, 24.11 mg/pot, 35.5 times higher than rice. The absorbed Cd by plants were in the order of 10.86 mg/pot in italianpoplar, 9.61 mg/pot in marigold, and 9.04 mg/pot in kenaf. 3. The residual Cd contents was the lowest in Popuaus alba x P. glandulosa soil and cotton followed. 4. Absorbed Cd dontent in plants was negatively correlated with the residual Cd concentration in soil.
