The main object of this work was to determine the influence of periodic chemical backwash on filtration resistance in membrane filtration system. In this work Hermia's models were used to investigate the fouling mechanisms involved in the microfiltration of $0.45{\mu}m$ filtered sewage feed. Batch microfiltration experiments were performed at transmembrane pressure 0.4 bar and different feed SCOD concentration (9~67 mgSCOD/L). The results showed that the best fit to experimental data corresponded to the intermediate blocking model followed by the standard and complete blocking model for all the experimental conditions tested. From the simulation results of filtration performance, it was found that in order to maintain sustainable operation of membrane filtration system, irreversible foulant component accumulated continuously on membrane surface and/or pore must be effectively removed. In addition, it was verified that periodic chemical backwash using NaOCl or NaOH effectively improved filtration performance of membrane.

Purposes of this study were to evaluate operational performance of submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined with periodic chemical backwash. Five lab-scale submerged MBRs were performed in accordance with NaOH dose, backwash solution volume. While filtration resistance of MBR system without backwash (Control) was increased persistently from startup, those of four MBR systems (RUN 1-4) with chemical backwash were maintained at $(1.4{\pm}0.16){\times}10^{12}$, $(8.6{\pm}0.90){\times}10^{11}$, $(1.9{\pm}0.10){\times}10^{12}$, $(1.4{\pm}0.10){\times}10^{12}l/m$, respectively. Under chemical backwash condition of 0.0230 M, 375 mL, permeability of membrane was highest at flux of $30L/m^2/hr$. According to results from experiment that changing condition of dose and volume, it was estimated that effect of chemical dose acts more greatly than backwash solution volume. Because COD removal rates of all MBR systems with chemical backwash were more than 96%, it was proved that NaOH added to backwash solution did not affect microorganism.

Secondary effluent contains particle compounds which are comprised of microorganisms that occurs membrane fouling when the water is reused. This study evaluates the characteristics of membrane fouling of secondary effluent reuse. Effects of chemical backwashing are analyzed to reduce membrane fouling by regular chemical backwashing. As the result, major membrane foulants are verified EPS materials which include protein and polysaccharide that cause biofilm cake layer on the membrane. Also, sodium hypochlorite is applied to chemical backwashing. The backwashing improves recover rate when injected chemical concentration is increased and chemical backwashing cycle is amplified. Chemical backwashing cycle affects more than injected chemical concentration yet idle time does not noticeably influence on reducing membrane fouling.
The quantity of residuals generated from water treatment plants depends upon the raw water quality, dosage of chemicals used, performance of the treatment process, method of sludge removal, efficiency of sedimentation, and backwashing frequency. Sludge production by the physical separation of SS occurs under quiescent conditions in the primary clarifier, where suspended solids are allowed to settle and to consolidate on the clarifier bottom. Raw primary sludge results when the settled solids are hydraulically removed from the tank. The relative solid and liquid fractions of a slurry are most commonly described by the solids concentration, expressed as mg/L or percent solids. The purpose of the present investigation is to estimate a suitability on the design capacities of residuals treatment facilities by the quantity of dewatered sludge generated from water treatment plants.
Biologically treated water contains a large quantity of organic matters and microorganisms which can cause various problems to membrane. The membrane fouling occurred by these reasons is hard to control by single physical cleaning. This study analyzes the efficiency of aeration with chemical backwashing and foulants removal during chemical backwashing. The cleaning efficiency improves when the chemical concentration is high and the contact time of chemical is long. Chemical backwashing with aeration shows exceptional cleaning efficiency which leads the physical cleaning is required during chemical backwashing since it forms flow inside the membrane submerged tank. From the foulants removal analysis, the particles such as turbidity and TOC removal rate increase when the aeration is applied. Dissolved matter of DOC and UV254 removal is dependent on higher chemical concentration. According to FTIR analysis, one of major foulants, the polysaccharide is controlled by the chemical backwashing with aeration condition.

This study was performed to discover the optimum operation conditions for the advanced water treatment using the ceramic membrane, introduced the first in the nation at the Y water treatment plant (WTP). The result of investigation to find the optimum operation conditions which can continue preserving the filtration performance as well as satisfying both the economics and the water quality is as follows. In the ordinary water quality condition of the Y WTP, the optimum filtration time(the backwash period), which can minimize the production of backwash waste and preserve the membrane performance was examined to be 4.0 hours on basis of institution capacity ($16,000m^3/day$). Examining the recovery rate of TMP from the chemical cleaning (CIP) discovered that the inorganic contaminants, which cause membrane fouling, such as iron, manganese, aluminum, were removed through the acidic cleaning using citric acid, whereas the membrane recovery rate was found to be low. But, on the other hand, the TMP was recovered to the initial value from the alkali cleaning using the NaOCl. Therefore, the main contaminant causing the fouling was determined to be hydrophilic organic compound( biopolymer). The membrane recovery rate is highly influenced by the temperature of the cleaning chemical. That is, the rate increased with increasing temperature.
