Economic Activities in Digital Platforms: Types, Natures, Risks, Policy Suggestions (플랫폼 경제활동에 대한 시론적 고찰: 유형, 특성, 예상위험, 정책대안을 중심으로)

  • The development of ICT has led to changes in the pattern and the meaning of work and requires restructuring of the existing social security system, which was established chiefly for the wage workers in the industrial economy. However, while economic activities within the digital platform markets are different from industrial labour, there is still a lack of discussion on what social problems platform workers can face and how to cope with them. As a comprehensive sketch of economic activities in platform economy, this study identifies the types of platform workers and analyses three characteristics of their economic activities - flexibility, virtuality, and connectivity. It then examines what social risks can be derived form the three characteristics. This research lastly suggests alternative social safety nets and policies to alleviates the social risks and problems that platform workers may face in the digital society.

Comparison of the Effects of an App-based and Poster-based Self-managed Workplace Stretching Program on Musculoskeletal Symptoms of Workers in Small Manufacturing Businesses (소규모 제조업 사업장 노동자의 근골격계질환 증상관리를 위한 앱 기반과 포스터 기반 자가관리 작업장 스트레칭 프로그램의 효과 비교)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of an 8 week, self-managed, app-based and poster-based stretching program on musculoskeletal symptoms, flexibility, stretching frequency, self-efficacy, social support, and musculoskeletal disorder knowledge in small manufacturing business workers. Methods: This was a cluster randomized, two-group pretest-posttest design. Workers were assigned to either an app-based (n=20) or a poster-based (n=25) stretching intervention. Both groups received an educational class. The app group also received mobile phone text messages and an app with stretching videos, stretching alarms, stretching records, and information on musculoskeletal disorders. The poster group received workplace stretching posters. Data were collected from April to September 2018 and analyzed with the 𝑥2 test, paired t-test, and independent t-test. Results: There was only a significant difference in social support. Significant increase in flexibility and musculoskeletal symptoms were noted for both groups, but social support and musculoskeletal disorder knowledge were significantly changed only in the poster group. More than half of the workers practiced stretching at least 3 times a week. Conclusion: The 8 week, self-managed, workplace stretching program was effective to increase flexibility and stretching frequency to at least 3 times a week. However, effective interventions for musculoskeletal symptoms could not be identified.

A Preliminary Study on the Wellness-Enhancing Effect of an App for the Development of the Self-Life Coaching App (셀프 라이프코칭 앱(App) 개발을 위한 앱의 웰니스 증진 효과에 대한 예비 연구)

  • Considering the necessity for individuals to check and manage their wellness to promote happiness, this study conducted preliminary research on the effect of wellness enhancement of the self-life coaching app. Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned to experimental groups 1 and 2 and a control group, respectively. In particular, the experimental groups were asked to perform self-life coaching for 4 weeks using a research app. Weekly feedback was provided to experimental group 1, but not to experimental group 2. The wellness index for workers (WIW) and the Korean wellness scale (KWS) were used as dependent variables. The analysis results of interaction effects between pre-, post-, and follow-up time points and groups reveal no statistically significant effects in both dependent variables, but the tendency of the effects was confirmed. Moreover, no difference was determined in terms of the presence or absence of weekly feedback in the experimental treatment effect. As a result of repeated measures variance analysis on KWS measured at five times, the wellness enhancement effect over time was statistically significant. Meanwhile, the polynomial trend analysis result confirmed the linear effect of the experimental treatment on wellness. The participation opinion survey also revealed that 84.2% of the participants perceived the activity to be helpful, and 78.9% responded that they would use it once every 1 or 2 weeks if the app is commercially available. This study is meaningful in that it suggests a methodology for utilizing the self-life coaching app so that anyone can use it to promote their wellness and partially confirms the effectiveness of this method.
