  • This study was conducted to investigate protocol standardization for spermatozoa cryopreservation of the Scapharca broughtonii (Schrenck). Among the freezing rates, freezing at a height of 2 cm above liquid nitrogen surface for 5 minute gave higher activity and survival rate. Among the various diluents, Ringer's solution was the best for S. broughtonii sperm cryopreservation. The suitability of cryoprotectants dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylacetamide (DMA), glycerol and methanol were tested against three freezing rates. DMSO gave significantly higher activity and survival rates than others.

  • A study on the dielectric characteristics of the Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) is important for designing a reliable high voltage superconducting machines such as transmission superconducting fault current limiters, superconducting cables, and superconducting transformers. In this paper, dielectric experiments of the GFRP under lightning impulse voltage are conducted in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) according to various experimental conditions such as the thicknesses of the GFRP, the diameters of electrode systems and the pressures. The dielectric characteristics of the GFRP are analyzed by using a Finite Elements Method(FEM) according to various field utilization factors. It has been reported that the electrical insulation design of the GFRP would be conducted by considering the mean electric field intensity($E_{mean}$) distributed inside the GFRP. In this study, it is found that the dielectric performance of the GFRP could be explained by not only $E_{mean}$ but also the maximum electric field intensity ($E_{max}$). Finally, the empirical formulae of the GFRP to estimate an electrical breakdown voltage at sparkover under the lightning impulse condition are deduced. It is expected that the presented experimental results in this paper are helpful to design electrically reliable high voltage superconducting machines using the GFRP as an insulation material.

  • The performance tests of secondary throat supersonic exhaust diffusers were carried out by using scaled down model and gas nitrogen. It was performed to find the performance characteristics according to diffuser inlet length(Ld), secondary throat length(Lst), divergence length(Ls). There was few change by diffuser inlet length(Ld), but starting pressures of the diffusers were effected by secondary throat length(Lst), divergence length(Ls). It was confirmed that starting pressure was not changed over 8 Lst/Dst.

  • In this study, gas chromatographic analysis was carried out on volatile constituents of cooked squid for the object of obtaining information on the characteristic flavor of the cooked squid meat. The results obtained are as follows: 1) Methanol was the most effective solvent for the extraction of volatile constituents of squid meat. 2) Twenty five and thirty two peaks were detected from the condensate collected in cold traps which were immersed in ice water and dry ice-acetone, respectively. In these compounds, five kinds of volatile organic acids such as acetic acid, butyric acid, iso-valeric acid, valeric acid, and caproic acid were identified. 3) Eleven peaks were detected from the head space vapor collected in cold trap which is immersed in liquid nitrogen. Volatile amines identified in these components are as follows; methylamine, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, ethylamine, and iso-propylamine.

  • With the successful commercialization of Bi-2223 powder-in-tube wire , various attempts in the R & D of the high-Tc superconducting (HTS) magnets for high magnetic field applications are being implemented actively. Operating temperature of HTS magnet has to be maintained at the designed level but the magnetic energy and mechanical disturbance can cause unstable operational temperature of HTS magnet. Especially the generated heat energy of inner HTS winding Is apt to be accumulated . so the normal region appears in HTS winding. This paper deals with the quenching characteristics of three kinds of selected Bi-2223 wires : the High Current Density Wire (HC-A) and the High Strength Wire (HS-A) made by AMSC and HTS wire(HW-I) made by Innost The Innost wire has the highest minimum quench energy (MQE). The High Current Density Wire has the highest normal zone Propagation velocity (NZPV).

  • A magnetic field sensor is fabricated with superconducting ceramics of Y-Ba-Cu-O system. The prepared material shows the superconductivity at about 95K. The sensor at liquid nitrogen temperature shows the increase in electrical resistance by applying magnetic field. Actually, the voltage drop across the sensor is changed from zero to a value. more than $100{\mu}V$ by the applied magnetic field. The change in electrical resistance depends on magnetic field. The sensitivity of this sensor is 2.9 ohm/T. The sensing limit is about $1.5{\times}10^{-5}T(=1.5{\times}10^{-1}G)$. The increase in electrical resistance by the magnetic field is ascribed to a modification of the Josephson junctions due to the penetrating magnetic flux into the superconducting material.

  • A technique to measure the adsorption characteristic of surface area and pore size distribution is proposed and its performance is examined. While the existing equipment utilizes liquid nitrogen, the proposed uses carbon dioxide at the room temperature leading to the small measuring device with easy operation and short measurement time. The performance of the device has been examined with micro-particle carbon cryogel and bamboo activated carbon. The results from the proposed device compared with those of the adsorption apparatus indicate that the measurement of meso-porous material is comparable but micro-porous material gives some error.

  • This study was peformed to find out the optimum larval stage among trochophore, early Dshaped larva, late D-shaped larva, early umbo and late umbo stages for cryopreservation of surf clam, Spisula sachalinensis larvae. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)and ethylene glycol were used as cryoprotectant, The larvae were immersed to cryoprotectants for 10 minutes and thereafter, cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Survival rates of trochophores frozen-thawed in 2.0 M dimethyl sulfoxide and 2.0 M ethylene glycol were the highest as 97.4% and 85.0%, respectively and post-thaw survival rates were decreased with the larval growth.

  • The effect of surface roughness on biodegradability of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) was investigated. The PHB film prepared by cooling the molten polymer slowly ($-0.5^{\circ}C$/min) had higher crystallinity and melting temperature than that prepared by quenching into liquid nitrogen followed by annealing at $90^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. However, the former sample was found to degrade faster than the latter due to presence of microscopic crack. Roughening the surface of a PHB film by hot pressing under a coarse surfaced plate accelerated the bioerosion considerably of the sample in comparison with the sample having the same thermal history but smooth surface.

  • The grand canonical ensemble partition function for the adsorbed phase of gases on solid surfaces is derived according to the transient state theory of significant liquid structure. The derived adsorption isotherms from the partition function for argon, nitrogen and benzene adsorbed on various adsorbents are in good agreement with the observed values. The surface pressure, the molar entropy, the molar internal energy and the molar heat of adsorption are calculated for benzene adsorbed on graphite. The molar entropy is minimum at near the pressure where a close packed monolayer is formed. The method of parameter determination is illustrated.
