A numerical study for the turbulent reacting flow in an orimulsion gasifier has been carried out to analyze the characteristics of chemical reaction by orimulsion droplets. In this study, our interest has been focused on the effect of oxidizer to orimulsion ratio, which is one of the key parameters of gasification operation, as well as on the distribution of chemical species. In addition, we have conducted numerical calculations to understand the effect of droplet size, spray angle and injection velocity of fuel so as to acquire the basic information on the operating range of orimulsion gasifier. The result of numerical calculations showed that the gas composition of CO and H$_2$concentrations was the highest when the oxidizer to orimulsion ratio was about 0.88 and the reactivity of orimulsion increased as the droplet size reduced with proper spray angle. Also, we have carried out the analysis on the orimulsion gasification in the 100 ton/day-scale gasifier based upon the prior study in order to obtain the basic data for the proper operating condition using orimulsion feed.

In the present study, we designed a microfluidic platform for generating monodisperse droplets with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers. To generate fine droplets, T-junction and flow-focusing geometry are integrated into the microfluidic channel. Relatively large aqueous droplets are generated at the upstream T-junction and transported to the flow-focusing geometry, where each droplet is broken into smaller droplets of the desired size by the action of pressure and viscous stress. In this configuration, the flow rate of the inner fluid can be made very low, and the ratio of the inner- and outer-fluid flow rates in the flow-focusing region can be made very high. It has been shown that the present microfluidic device can generate droplets with diameters of approximately $1\;{\mu}m$ (standard deviation: <3%).

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the combustion of single droplets and 1-D droplet arrays of jet A-1 fuel droplets in atmospheric pressure. Experimental results indicate that burning rate constants$({\kappa}_c)$ of jet A-1 fuel droplets were independent of initial droplet size as $0.915{mm}^2$/sec. It was acquired a general relationship expressing the variation of $d^2$ with time for droplet burning For 1-D droplet arrays $(l/d_o$=1.208{\sim}2.922)$/TEX>, the burning rate constant ${\kappa}_c$ decreased with decreasing droplet spacing $l/d_o$ and, The effect on combustion rate constant ${\kappa}_c$ was stronger to second fuel droplet than third fuel droplet with uniform droplet distance

Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA) was used to scrutinize the spatial distribution characteristics of spray emanating from a small Liquid-Rocket Engine (LRE) injector. Droplet size and velocity were measured according to the variation of injection pressure along the plane normal to the spray stream and then the spray characteristic parameters such as Arithmetic Mean Diameter (AMD), Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), number density, span of drop size distribution, and volume flux were deduced for an investigation of spray breakup characteristics. As the injection pressure increases, the number density, span, and volume flux of spray droplets become higher, whereas the AMD gets smaller.
The effects of the shape of a drencher head on the flow characteristics and radiation attenuation of a water curtain, in order to prevent a fire spread, were experimentally studied. The distance (h) between the orifice exit and deflector and the diameter of deflector (D) were varied as the shape factors of the head, with the same orifice diameter (d). It was found that an increase in h leads to an increase in the water flow rate and spray angle. However, the change in the spray angle decreases with increasing D. Increasing D brings about a subtle increase in the water flow rate and a significant decrease in the spray angle. A larger value of D makes it possible to produce a flatter pattern of the water curtain, but reduces the uniformity of the droplets inside the spray angle. The mean droplet diameter decreases significantly as the operating pressure increases. However, the variation in the shape of the drencher head does not significantly affect the change in the mean diameter at the same operating pressure. Finally, it was found that the radiation attenuation afforded by the water curtain at the same operating pressure was affected by water flow rate and droplet uniformity, which were determined by h and D, respectively.

In this paper, numerical experiment is attempted to analyze and compare the combustion efficiency of the burning sprays due to OFO, FOF triplet / FOOF split doublet injectors. Preconditioned Wavier-Stokes equation system with low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model for turbulence closure, is LU-SGS time-integrated. Spray processes are modeled by DSF analysis with experimentally determined injection characteristics. n-heptane/air global reaction model approximates the combustion for simplicity, and the influence of turbulence on the chemical reaction is included using eddy dissipation model. The results showed the FOF triplet injector of highest combustion efficiency, whereas the OFO type of poet performance. It was also observed that the droplet mean diameter and the average gas temperature due to the mixing efficiency, are the representative parameters for the performance design of combustion.
In this study, the effects of the characteristics of droplets of water spray on suppression of fire were analyzed numerically using fire dynamics simulator (FDS) 6.5.2. Additionally, the fire suppression characteristics by the water spray nozzle, including the extinguishing coefficient (EC), droplet size distribution function (SDF), median volumetric diameter (MVD), and droplets per second (DPS), were evaluated in terms of the decreasing normalized heat release rate (HRR) curve and cooling time. It was observed that with increase in the EC, the normalized HRR curve decreased rapidly, and the changing MVD affected the suppression of fire. In case of mono-disperse, the normalized HRR curve decreased slowly with the increase in DPS. On the contrary, in case of multi-disperse, the normalized HRR curve decreased rapidly even with a small increase in DPS.
The objective of the present work is to examine the cooling characteristics of water droplet on the unburned surface. The hot solid surface material used brass, carbon steel and copper at temperature ranging from 70 to $116^{\circ}$. the droplet size is from 2.4 mm to 3.0 mm. The CCD camera was used to record the evaporation histories of the droplets. and the evaporation time of the droplet on the hot solid surface could be determined by using frame-by-frame analysis of the video records. It is found that during the droplet evaporation process for copper the temperature remains nearly constant, whereas for carbon steel the temperature continuously decreases about $1^{\circ}$. During the droplet evaporation process on the hot solid surface, regardless of solid materials, nondimensional droplet volume decreases nondimensional evaporation time increases.
