A Review on Fuel Properties and Liquid Biofuels Production Technologies from Sewage Sludge (하수슬러지 유래 액상 바이오연료화 기술 및 연료 특성)

  • The utilization of sewage sludge for liquid biofuel production is considered as a approach for achieving better energy security, sustainable productivity and economical raw material. Thermochemical technologies of sewage sludge into energy and fuel has been considered as one of the most effective process. Generally, sewage sludge contains more than 80% of moisture, has high metal contents and 14 ~ 20 MJ/kg of calorific value. This paper reviews the technologies of converting sewage sludge to liquid biofuel via three main thermochemical conversion processes namely pyrolysis, transesterification and supercritical. The fuel properties of liquid fuels produced by different technologies from sewage sludge and definition in relevant laws for liquid biofuels in Korea are also discussed.

대형 디젤대체용 LPG 엔진개발

  • 대형디젤엔진의 대체용으로 LPG 엔진을 개발함에 있어서 차세대 연료공급방식인 LPG 연료의 액상분사방식을 채택하여 기존의 믹서방식의 연료공급시스템을 가진 LPG 엔진보다 고출력, 고효율, 저공해성을 추구하고자 하였다. 이를 위한 기초연구로서 먼저 단기통 연소엔진을 이용하여 대형엔진에 LPG 연료 적용 가능성, 액상분사 시스템을 포함한 여러 가지 연료공급방식에 따른 엔진의 성능파악, 대형엔진에 적합한 최적 선회비의 결정, 연료조성에 따른 엔진성능의 변화 등을 알아보았다. 실험결과, 대형엔진에 LPG 연료의 적용은 아무런 문제점이 없었으며 LPi 연료공급방식은 다른 방식에 비해서 10%정도의 체적효율 및 출력의 증가를 확인할 수 있었다. 최적의 선회비는 2.0 부근에서 형성되었고, 연료 조성은 프로판 대 부탄의 비율이 60 : 40에서도 정상적으로 운전됨을 확인하였다. 시제품 엔진의 경우, 과급방식의 KL6i 엔진을 개발하기 앞서 좀더 기술적 접근이 용이한 자연흡입방식의 K-1엔진의 개발이 선행되었으며 현재 개발 진행중인 K-1엔진의 성능평가 결과, 기존의 디젤엔진에 비해 출력성능이 20% 정도 향상됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 대형차량에서 중요시 생각되는 저속토크 성능이 매우 우수한 것으로 파악되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 단기통 연소엔진에서 확인된 최적화된 연료조성과 선회비를 향후 K-1엔진에 적용할 예정이다. 최근 열린 가스학회 추계발표회와 LPG자동차세미나의 주요내용을 게재한다.

  • 분사연료의 혼합기형성과정 최적화를 통한 연소제어 기술은 디젤기관의 기관운전 및 배기특성을 향상시키기 위하여 매우 중요하다. 또한 분무의 혼합기형성 최적화를 위해서는 분사된 연료와 주위기체와의 혼합과정에 영향을 미치는 분무내부의 유동특성에 대한 연구는 필수 불가결하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 고온 고압의 증발장에서 분무의 액상 거동에 주목하고, 그 거동특성을 통하여 증발디젤분무의 혼합기형성을 해석한다. 비정상 증발분무의 중심축에 레이저 시트광을 입사한 후, 액상분무 액적의 Mie 산란광에 의한 2차원 화상을 획득하여 증발분무 액상의 속도분포 및 와도(vorticity) 등을 구하였다. 분무의 속도분포 및 와도는 2차원 화상에 PIV법을 적용하여 계산하였다. 그림 1에 본 연구에서 구한 속도분포의 일례를 보인다. 본 연구의 결과로 상변화를 동반하는 비정상 증발장에서 구한 분무액상의 거동 특성은 상변화가 일어나지 않는 비증발장에 있어서의 분무거동특성과 유사함을 확인하였다.

Preparation of High Purity Ammonium Dinitramide and Its Liquid Mono-propellant (암모늄 디나이트라마이드염의 합성 및 액상연료화 연구)

  • A recently developed propellant, ammonium dinitramide (ADN, $NH_4N(NO_2)_2$ is stable and safe at an ambient condition. However, it requires high purity for practical applications. A very little quantity of foreign impurities in ADN may cause clogging of thruster nozzles and catalyst poisoning for the use of a liquid propellant. Thus, several purification processes for precipitated ADN particles such as repetition extraction, activated carbon adsorption and low-temperature extraction were presented in this study. The purifying methods helped to improve the chemical purity as evaluated by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy in addition to ion chromatography (IC) analyses. Among the purification processes, adsorption was found to be the best, showing a final purity of 99.8% based on relative quantification by IC. Thermal analysis revealed an exothermic temperature of $148^{\circ}C$ for the synthesized liquid monopropellant, but rose to $188^{\circ}C$ when urea was added.

Experimental Investigation on Combustion Characteristics of Liquid Kerosene and Gelled Kerosene Using Shear Coaxial Injector (전단동축인젝터를 이용한 액상 케로신 및 젤 케로신의 연소특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, a hot-firing test of a lab-scale gel rocket motor using liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene as fuel was performed in order to analyze the discrepancy of the static and dynamic pressure between the two fuels. The static pressure, characteristic velocity, and characteristic velocity efficiency of the liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene did not show any significant difference. However, in the case of dynamic pressure characteristics, the pressure oscillation amplitude in a specific high frequency region of the gelled kerosene demonstrated a significantly higher amplitude than liquid kerosene case. This is considered to be the effect of an intrinsic combustion mechanism of the gel propellant, and it can be postulated that this may act as a dominant factor influencing the high frequency combustion instability of the gel rocket motor.

Characteristics of hazardous oil & liquid fuel waste discharged from various industries (폐유 및 액상연료 공정 폐기물에서 무기물질류의 함량특성)

  • This study was performed to investigate the contents characteristics of hazardous oil wastes and wastes of liquid fuels from different industrial process. In order to establish a hazardous waste list, samples of various industrial discharge have been analyzed for 16 non-regulated inorganic hazardous substances (i.e., Cu, Pb, Cd, CN, Hg, As, T-Cr, $Cr^{6+}$, Sb, Ni, F, V, Ba, Zn, Be, Se). In more detail, hazardous waste samples including waste hydraulic oils, waste engine, gear and lubricating oils, waste insulating and heat transmission oils, bilge oils, oil/water separator contents processing were collected from 37 workplaces and analyzed. We observed that the most of the inorganic substances exceeded the proposed criteria in many samples. Especially the concentration of Sb in heat transmission oil, bilge oil and gear & lubricating oils were ranged from 6 to 419 mg/kg whereas the proposed criteria is 50 mg/kg. The assessment result of hazardous waste in Korea according to the EWC showed that the out of 24 processes, 16 belongs to absolute entry and 8 belongs to mirror entry. In conclusion, we expect the outcome of this study to align the classification system of hazardous waste management in South Korea with international legislations, and consequently contribute to reduce environmental pollution as well as health risks by toxic wastes.

A Study on the Performance Characteristics of a Fuel Pump in LPG Engine (자동차용 LPG 펌프의 성능특성에 관한 연구)

  • In recent years, the need for more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles has driven the technical development of alternative fuels such as LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is able to meet the limits of better emission levels without many modifications to current engine design. LPG has a hish vapor pressure and lower viscosity and surface tension than diesel and gasoline fuels. These different fuel characteristics make it difficult to directly apply the conventional gasoline or diesel fuel pump. In this study, experiments are performed to get performance and efficiency of the fuel pump under different condition of the temperature, rotating speeds, and composition of fuel. The characteristics of fuel pump were affected by cavitation occurred from the variation of temperature and composition.

An Experimental Study on the Fundamental Characteristics of LPG Gas Injections System (LPG 가스분사시스템의 기초특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, butane 100% was used as fuel to verify the real fuel effect such as vapor pressure variation due to temperature change. A MPI fuel injection system for V-6 engine, which has reverse 'L' type cross section to minimize the possibility of liquid phase injection, was composed and one bank was operated under sequential injection scheme. Flow rate were measured according to injection duration, interval, and pressure. Also occurring of liquid phase injection was monitored with varying vaporizer and fuel rail temperature. The result shows that basic characteristics of injection is a relatively difference between air and LPG injection. Under cold start condition, however, the occurrence of liquid injection becomes more severe as the pressure increases, and sufficiently high temperature both in vaporizer and fuel rail is very important to insure gaseous injection. In addition, the temperature of vaporizer plays more important role in keeping LPG vapor state and the reverse 'L' type cross section of the rail is available to prevent liquid injection.

  • The potential change, and the crossover of alcohol in a liquid-feed solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell operating at atmosphere and room temperature was investigated. Alcohol crossover was generated from all the alcohol by using the fuel. The single-cell property of direct methanol fuel cell was higher than that of other alcohol species as $31mW/cm^2$ at 0.23 V at 4.5M of methanol.

  • 최근에 경기악화에 따른 석유수요 감소로 우리가 주로 수입하는 두바이유는 배럴당 56 달러선이지만, 유가가 배럴당 100~120 달러로 오를 경우, 원유 대체 및 신규 에너지원 확보를 위해 Bitumen, Oil Shale, 중질잔사유 등 고점도 액상연료를 이용하기 위한 기술개발이 활발히 진행될 것으로 예상된다. 그리고 이에 따라 연소효율이 떨어지는 고점도 저급연료를 이용하여 연소효율을 극대화시키기 위해 계면활성제를 이용하여 화학적으로 유화시키는 기술들이 개발되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 고점도 유체에 대해 계면활성제를 이용하지 않고 캐비테이션 방식을 이용하여 고점도 유체를 에멀젼화 하는 기술을 연구하였다. 에멀젼화 기술은 저급연료유에 물을 혼합하여 안정적으로 장기간 유수분리가 일어나지 않으며, 복합연료로서 반응로에서 연소시킴으로써 연소율을 개선시킬수 있는 기술인데, 발전소의 보일러, 선박, 소각로 등에 적용할 수 있으며 중질잔사유를 사용하는 가스화 발전에도 본 기술이 사용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
