  • The purpose of this study was to predict environmental distribution of anthracene, benzene, benzo[a]pyrene, 1-methylphenanthrene and phenanthrene in a four phase biopile system - air, water, soil and non aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) phase using level I fugacity model. Soil samples used for this study were collected from three sites in the United Kingdom which were historically contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. The level I fugacities (f) for the five contaminants were markedly different, however, the fugacities of each contaminant in three soil samples did not show significant difference. NAPL and soil were the dominant phases for all five contaminants. Results of this study indicated that difference in percentage of organic carbon strongly influenced the partitioning behavior of the cntaminants. The presence of benzene calls for an urgent need for risk-based management of air and water phase. Whereas insignificant amount of chemicals leached in the water phase for other organic contaminants showing greatly reduced potential of groundwater contamination. Furthermore, this study helped us to confirm the association of risk critical contaminants with the residual saturation in treated soils. They also can be used to emphasize the importance of accounting for the partitioning behavior of both NAPL and soil phases in the process of the risk assessment of the sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.

  • The application of solid phase microextraction (SPME) is generally conducted by directly immersing the fiber into the liquid sample or by exposing the fiber in the head space (HS). The extraction temperature, the time of incubation, and application of stirring are often designated to be the most important parameters for achieving the best extraction efficiencies of HS-SPME analysis. In this study, relative importance of these three analytical parameters involved in the HS-SPME method is evaluated using a polydimethylsiloxane/carboxen (PDMS/CAR) fiber. To optimize its operation conditions the competing relationships between different parameters were investigated by comparing the extraction efficiency based on the combination of three parameters and two contracting conditions: (1) heating the sample at 30 vs. 50 C, (2) exposing samples at two durations of 10 vs. 30 min, and (3) application of stirring vs. no stirring. According to our analysis among 8 combination types of HS-SPME method, an extraction condition termed as S50-30 condition ((1) 1200 rpm stirring, (2) $50^{\circ}C$ exposure temp, and (3) 30 min exposure duration) showed maximum recovery rate of 45.5~68.5% relative to an arbitrary reference of direct GC injection. According to this study, the employment of stirring is the most crucial factor to improve extraction efficiency in the application of HS-SPME.

  • Liquefaction refers to a phenomenon in which excessive pore water pressure occurs when a dynamic load such as an earthquake rapidly acts on a loose sandy soil saturated with soil, and the ground loses effective stress and becomes liquefied. The indoor repeated test for liquefaction evaluation can be confirmed through the repeated triaxial compression test and the repeated shear test. In this regard, this study tried to confirm the liquefaction resistance strength according to the relative density and particle size distribution of sand using the repeated triaxial compression test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the liquefaction resistance strength increased as the relative density increased regardless of the soil classification, and the liquefaction resistance strength according to the particle size distribution of the sand was confirmed that the liquefaction resistance strength of the SP sample close to SW was significantly higher. In addition, as a result of analyzing 30% of fine powder compared to 0% of fine powder, as the relative density increased to 40~70%, the liquefaction resistance strength decreased by 5~20%, and the domestic weathered soil ground had a fine liquefaction resistance strength compared to Jumunjin standard sand. When the minute was 10%, it was measured to be 30% or more, and when the fine particle was 30%, it was measured to be less than 50%.

  • $Li_2MnSiO_4$/C was synthesized by solid state reaction and solution synthesis with sucrose for carbon source. The X-ray diffraction patterns of solid state reaction indicates small amount of impurities. By FE-SEM and HR-TEM, solution synthesis comprised several tens of nanometer comparing to 500~600 nm of $Li_2MnSiO_4$/C prepared by solid state reaction. The $Li_2MnSiO_4$/C prepared by solution synthesis show better electrochemical performance than solid state reaction. The first charge-discharge capacity are 236, 189 mAh/g respectively by solution synthesis. But its cycle performance was poor as yet and its capacity retention was 62% after 10 cycles.

  • In 2017, after the Pohang earthquake, liquefaction phenomena were firstly observed after the observation of domestic earthquake by epicenter. In this study, various in-situ tests and laboratory tests were performed to determine the dynamic properties in (1) Songlim Park, (2) Heunghae-eup, Mangcheon-ri and (3) Heungan-ri, Pohang. As a site investigation, the standard penetration test (SPT), cone penetration test (CPT), multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW), density logging, downhole test, and electrical resistivity survey were performed. In addition, cyclic triaxial test against sampled sand from site was also conducted. Based on the result, high ground water level and loose sand layer in shallow depth were observed for all sites. In addition, liquefaction resistance ratio of soil sampled from Songlim park was lower than those of Jumunjin sand, Toyoura sand, and Ottawa sand.

  • The purpose of this study is to utilize conventional procedures for evaluation of liquefaction potential and to compare the results obtained by modified detailed method based on Korean earthquake magnitude (M=6.5). Liquefaction potential is assessed by comparing liquefaction strength of soil and cyclic shear stress generated in the soil layers during earthquakes. The cyclic shear stress is computed from the earthquake response analysis, and liquefaction strength of soil is evaluated by using results from cyclic triaxial tests. The cyclic triaxial tests are performed on many different conditions of sample ; relative densities(50%, 60%, and 70%), initial effective confining pressures (70kPa, 100kPa, and 150kPa), and fine contents(10%, 20%, and 30%). From the result of comparing the conventional procedure with the modified detailed method, it is found that the modified detailed method tends to evaluate larger safety factor against liquefaction in the weak sand site$(FS \leq1.5)$. Therefore in this case, it is suggested that liquefaction potential should be evaluated by using the modified detailed method based on cyclic triaxial tests. It is also found that in modified detailed method based on earthquake magnitude 6.5, critical depth where liquefaction can be generated is around 15m from the ground surface.

  • Y-5a-Cu-O superconductors were prepared by TSMG (Top-Seeded Melt Growth) process with multiseeding technique. By using several seeds at the same time, large samples could be fabricated in a short time with simple heat treatment. However, the samples fabricated by normal multiseeding technique show the rapid decrease of trapped magnetic field value across the grain boundaries because of the residual liquid layer. To remove the residual liquid layer, modified multiseeding was newly suggested. The individual grains were combined as single domain, and did not show deterioration of magnetic property at the boundary. The formation mechanism of a well-combined domain by multiseeding technique was discussed.

  • Diatomite is a silicic porous sedimentary rock composed of diatom frustules, used for filtration aid, filler, absorbent, abrasive, carrier, insulator, and fertilizer. During the calcination of diatomite to improve physical properties for filtration-aid application, amorphous silica is transformed to cristobalite. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy studies were carried out for 17 diatomite samples, showing that 16 diatomite samples contain cristobalite in the range of 6~100 %. Concentration of respirable cristobalite in air is regulated as harmful substances, but the residual cristobalite in food is treated as generally safe substance. The determination procedure of cristobalite content in food was established for managing food safety. Calibration curve of cristobalite filtered on silver membrane were obtained by X-ray diffraction. The lower limit of quantification was evaluated as 2.7 mg. The cristobalite was not detected in the analyses of selected food samples using the established procedure.

  • In this study, the effect of humidity change on DNPH cartridge sampling efficiency for carbonyl compounds (CCs) has been investigated. For this analysis, gaseous standard of 6 different CCs (formaldehyde (FA), acetaldehyde (AA), propionaldehyde (PA), butyraldehyde (BA), isovaleraldehyde (IA), and valeraldehyde (VA)) was calibrated after derivatization with three types of DNPH cartridge products. Their calibration results derived at RH values between 0 and 80% were then compared against liquid phase standards. If the results of our analysis are compared by the RH values between 20 and 80%, the effect of RH can be distinguished between light and heavy CCs. For lighter CCs (like FA and AA), there was no significant change. However, for the ones heavier than PA, there was fairly noticeable increase in relative recovery ratio in RH value between 20 and 80%. Such patterns are seen consistently from all three DNPH products tested for comparison. The results of our analysis suggest that proper correction for RH change may be needed for heavier CCs by the cartridge method.

  • Uniform and optimum sized silver nanoplates were synthesized through the liquid phase reduction method by using silver nitrate solution as a starting chemical, dimethylformmide (DMF) as a reducing solvent, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as reducing and surfactant agents. Synthesized and also film samples were characterized by using SEM, TEM, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, particle size analyzer (PSA), and XRD. Triangle nanoplates with the size of 100~200 nm were found from the sample synthesized at $70^{\circ}C$ for 72 h using silver nitrate, DMF and 26 wt% PVP. The sample could reflect near-infrared light because it showed the maximum absorbing peak at about 1,000 nm. When the content or particle size of silver nanoplates increased in coating solutions, the transmittance decreased and the reflectance increased in film samples.
