  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of parental attachment on the subjective well-being of undergraduate students and the role of perfectionism. Undergraduate students(N=416) were administered a questionnaire on parent and peer attachment, and the results were characterized by the well-being scale, and multidimensional perfectionism scale. The results indicated that trust had a positive effect on life satisfaction, whereas isolation had a negative effect on life satisfaction. Parental communication had a positive effect on self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism. Self-orientated perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism had a positive effect on positive affection and life satisfaction and, socially prescribed perfectionism had a positive effect on negative affection. A hierarchial strategy for multiple regression was conducted to examine the role of perfectionism. The result indicated that self-oriented perfectionism mediated the effect of communication on positive affection, and socially prescribed perfectionism mediated the effect of trust on negative affection. In addition, socially prescribed perfectionism mediates the effect of isolation on negative affection.

  • Purpose: This descriptive correlational study was designed to examine the relationship of attachment security to social anxiety and depression. In addition, the mediating effect of self competency in relation to attachment security and the other variables was investigated. Methods: Data were collected from 194 students in grade 5 or 6, and descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierachical multiple regression were used with SPSS/PC 12.0 program to analyze the data. The instruments used were Kerns, Klepac and Cole's Security Scale, La Greca & Stones' Revised Social Anxiety Scales for children (SASC-R), Cho and Lee's Korean form of Kovacs' children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and Harter' Self-perception Profile for Children. Results: There were significantly negative effects between attachment security and the variables, social anxiety and depression. Also, self competency was negatively correlated with social anxiety and depression. Self competency had a significant mediating effect on the relation of social anxiety and depression to attachment security. Conclusion: For the effective management and prevention of social anxiety and depression in school-aged children, programs including strategies to increase self competency should be developed. These programs can increase self competency which has a mediator role between attachment security and the other variables (social anxiety and depression).

  • This research examines the effects of parental attachment as a family-related variable, and depressive mood as an individual variable on anger expression style among Korean college students. Anger expression style was divided into three domains including anger-in, anger-out, and anger-control. The data were collected from 437 college student respondents using a self-administered questionnaire. The results demonstrated that male students displayed higher levels of anger-control compared to females, but no gender-related difference in the level of anger-in and anger-out. In addition, anger-control was positively associated with parental attachment. However, anger control in terms of anger-in and anger-out were negatively related to parental attachment and positively linked to depression. Additionally, parental attachment demonstrated a negative correlation with depressive mood. Multiple regression results indicated that after controlling for the effect of gender, anger-control expression style was influenced by parental attachment but not by depressive mood. In addition, anger-out and anger-in expression styles were influenced by depressive mood but not by parental attachment. Finally, implications for educators and clinicians working with college students and their family are discussed along with some suggestions for future research.

  • The purpose of this study was to discriminate important variables among general self-efficacy, peer attachment, and parent-child communication that could predict internalizing problems(anxiety, depression) of Korean children of divorce. The participants were 101 children aged from 10 to 13. They completed questionnaires and discriminant function analyses were performed. The results showed that (a) the discriminant function derived from 3 variables was effective in classifying high, moderate, and low group of children's anxiety and depression, (b) parent-child communication plays a key role in predicting anxiety and general self-efficacy plays a key role in predicting depression of Korean children of divorce, (c) but peer attachment plays a significant role only to predict depression. This means that anxiety and depression of Korean children of divorce result from different kind of interactions among children's important contexts.

  • This study was aimed at (1) investigating expectant mothers' prenatal attachment according to variables (age, gestational weeks, perceived health condition, anticipating the gender of the fetus, marriage duration, and parity), (2) analyzing correlations among their prenatal attachment, spousal support, and parenting efficacy, and (3) examining the role of prenatal attachment as a mediator between spousal support and parenting efficacy. For this purpose, 221 expectant mothers living in Seoul completed a 55-item survey. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regression analyses. The findings of this study were as follows. First, among the variables, gestational weeks, perceived health condition, marriage duration, and parity showed significant differences in the scores for the overall prenatal attachment and subordinate factors. Second, there were positive correlations between the expectant mothers' prenatal attachment and spousal support and between their prenatal attachment and parenting efficacy. Third, the expectant mothers' prenatal attachment proved to mediate between spousal support and parenting efficacy. These findings shed light on the significance of prenatal attachment and spousal support during the pregnancy period; therefore, it is essential to develop education programs for expecting parents to enhance prenatal attachment and spousal support and to conduct follow-up studies to verify the effectiveness of the programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of attachment across an individual's lifespan. The present study investigated how father attachment in childhood influences adult student's school adjustment and explored the mediating effect of self-esteem between those two variables. Five hundred and twenty-nine adult students who were enrolled in S Cyber University were participants in this study. Subjects' ages ranged from 20-59. They were issued with a questionnaire addressing their present self-esteem level, attachment toward their father in childhood, and school adjustment. The results from SEM analysis indicated that adult students' self-esteem completely mediated between their attachment to their father in childhood and their school adjustment in adulthood. This result shows that a secure attachment to a father in childhood is related to child's own internal working model, and that positive self-esteem is related to social interactions including school adjustment.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the pathways from attachment to children's psychological well-being in addition to the mediating role of children's ego-resilience and peer support. The participants, 297 fifth and sixth grade students from Seoul and other cities, completed questionnaires on attachment, ego-resilience, peer support and psychological well-being. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation coefficients, factor analysis, and path analysis. The findings are as follows. Attachment didn't appear to directly influence children's psychological well-being, but showed a number of indirect effects in two ways. First, attachment indirectly affected children's psychological well-being by ego-resilience as a simple form of mediation. Second, attachment influenced children's psychological well-being through children's ego-resilience and peer support as a dual mediation. Ego-resilience demonstrated the strongest effect on psychological well-being among all the factors examined. These results highlight the way in which children's personal internal resources play an important role in the pathways from attachment to their psychological well-being.

All respondents submitted their answers on a self-report questionnaire. The measurement instruments were Brennan, Clark, & Shaver'(1998) 'Multi-item Measure of Adult Romantic Attachment', Rosenberg'(1979) Self-esteem Scale, and Hendrick, Hendrick, & Dicke'(1998) 'Love Attitudes Scale'. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regressions. Major results of this study were as follows: (a) In romantic attachment and self-esteem, sex was not a significant factor. In the love attitudes, sex was significant, and men showed higher levels of Eros and Agape than women. Women showed higher levels of Plasma than men. (b) Romantic attachment(avoidance and anxiety dimensions) were negatively correlated to self-esteem. (c) The avoidance dimension of romantic attachment was negatively correlated to Eros, Mania, and Agape and positively Ludus. The anxiety dimension of romantic attachment was positively correlated to Ludus, Plasma, Mania, and Agape. (d) Self-esteem was negatively correlated to Mania and positively correlated to Eros and Pragma.
