The hydrodynamic problem when the pressurized bag submerges partially into water and oscillates was formulated by Lee(1992), and the solution method was given. In his formulation, however, the compressibility of air was neglected and the pressure inside the bag was assumed to be constant. In this paper, the formulation was done including the air compressibility and the wall to block fling around phenomenon. The compression process was assumed to be a isothermal process for a static problem, isentropic process for a dynamic problem. And the stability was analyzed for the static problem. Through the various numerical calculations, the forces and the shape of the bag were compared with those of a rigid body case, constant pressure case, and variable pressure case.

In this paper, we applied coupled non-isothermal, multiphase fluid flow and geomechanical numerical modeling using TOUGH-FLAC coupled analysis to study the complex thermodynamic and geomechanical performance of underground lined rock caverns (LRC) for compressed air energy storage (CAES). Mechanical stress in concrete linings as well as pressure and temperature within a storage cavern were examined during initial and long-term operation of the storage cavern for CAES. Our geomechanical analysis showed that effective stresses could decrease due to air penetration pressure, and tangential tensile stress could develop in the linings as a result of the air pressure exerted on the inner surface of the lining, which would result in tensile fracturing. According to the simulation in which the tensile tangential stresses resulted in radial cracks, increment of linings' permeability and air leakage though the linings, tensile fracturing occurred at the top and at the side wall of the cavern, and the permeability could increase to $5.0{\times}10^{-13}m^2$ from initially prescribed $10{\times}10^{-20}m^2$. However, this air leakage was minor (about 0.02% of the daily air injection rate) and did not significantly impact the overall storage pressure that was kept constant thanks to sufficiently air tight surrounding rocks, which supports the validity of the concrete-lined underground caverns for CAES.

A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from a ballistic range. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The variation of a virtual mass and the shape of projectile are added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation systems. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, drag histories and the major flow characteristics of the projectile.

As a high-speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of it due to the piston action of train. The compression waves propagate along the tunnel and reflect backward at the exit of tunnel. A complex wave phenomenon appears in the tunnel, because of the successive reflections of the pressure waves at the exit and entrance of tunnel. The pressure waves can give rise to large pressure transients which impose the fluctuating loads on the running train. It is highly needed that the pressure transients should be predicted to design the train body and to improve the comfort for the passengers in the train. In the present study, the pressure transients and aerodynamic drag for two-trains running in a tunnel were calculated numerically for a wide range of train speed, and compared with the results of the previous tunnel tests and calculations for one train. The present calculation results agreed with ones of the tunnel tests, and the mechanism of pressure transients was made clear.

Light gas guns have a large number of applications in various fields of engineering. A two-stage light gas gun can develop an extremely high pressure in a very short interval of time. This can be employed efficiently in the application of ultra-high pressure liquid jets. In general, the two-stage light gas gun is made up of a high pressure tube, a compression tube and a launch tube, each stage being separated by diaphragms. The first diaphragm is installed downstream of the high pressure tube and the second, downstream of the compression tube. In the present study, experiments are carried out to investigate the projectile velocity and pressure behavior in the tubes according to the pressure changes at diaphragm opening. It is found that the rupture pressure of the first diaphragm has a dominant influence on projectile velocity. It is also observed that at pressures greater than 14 bar, the pressure in the launch tube exceeds that in the compression tube.

A compressible multiphase flow was investigated using a DIM consisting of seven equations, including the fifth-order MLP and a modified HLLC Riemann solver to achieve a precise interface structure of liquid and gas. The numerical methods were verified by comparing the flow structures of the high-pressure water and low-pressure air in the shock tube. A 2D air-helium shock-bubble interaction at the incident shock wave condition (Mach number 1.22) was numerically solved and verified using the experimental results.
