  • This research is to evaluate the fire extinguishing performance at a mixing ratio of pressurized air in the fire extinguishing system of compressed air foam (CAF) which injects compressed air into foam liquid and then discharging. The experimental device is made use of exclusive foam extinguishing facility for compressed air foam that is produces based on Canada National Laboratory and UL 162 standard, apply model of oil fire (B Class) 20 unit in accordance with "Standard of Model Approval and Product Inspection for Fire Extinguishing Agent" to the fire Extinguishing model. Compressed air is injected through the air mixture and study the tendency depending on increasing air foam ratio 1 : 4, 1 : 7, 1 : 10. In addition, the comparison experiments between synthetic surfactants foam and AFFF carry out with it at the air foam ratio 1 : 4. As a result, in the condition of same discharging flow, fire extinguishing effect of AFFF is the fastest at the air foam ratio 1 : 7 and the slowest at 1 : 10. Moreover, the fire extinguishing effect of AFFF in the comparison expeiments between AFFF and synthetic surfactants foam is faster than the other.

  • Holdup characteristics of bubble, wake and continuous liquid phases were investigated in bubble columns with viscous liquid media. Effects of column diameter(0.051, 0.076, 0.102 and 0.152 m ID), gas velocity($U_G$=0.02~0.16 m/s) and liquid viscosity(${\mu}_L$=0.001~0.050 $Pa{\cdot}s$) of continuous liquid media on the holdups of bubble, wake and continuous liquid phases were discussed. The three phase such as bubble, wake and continuous liquid phases were classified successfully by adapting the dual electrical resistivity probe method. Compressed filtered air and water or aqueous solutions of CMC(Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) were used as a gas and a liquid phase, respectively. To detect the wake as well as bubble phases in the bubble column continuously, a data acquisition system(DT 2805 Lab Card) with personal computer was used. The analog signals obtained from the probe circuit were processed to produce the digital data, from which the wake phase was detected behind the multi-bubbles as well as single bubbles rising in the bubble columns. The holdup of bubble and wake phases decreased but that of continuous liquid media increased, with an increase in the column diameter or liquid viscosity. However, the holdup of bubble and wake phases increased but that of continuous media decreased with an increase in the gas velocity. The holdup ratio of wake to wake to bubble phase decreased with an increase in the column diameter or gas velocity, however, increased with an increase in the viscosity of con-tinuous liquid media. The holdups of bubble, wake and continuous liquid media could be correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions as: ${\varepsilon}_B=0.043D^{-0.18}U_G^{0.56}{\mu}_L^{-0.13}$, ${\varepsilon}_W=0.003D^{-0.85}U_G^{0.46}{\mu}_L^{-0.10}$, ${\varepsilon}_C=1.179D^{0.09}U_G^{-0.13}{\mu}_L^{0.04}$.

  • A series of preliminary model tests are performed to find out the wave attenuating effect of the pneumatic breakwater of environment friendly type, which is a bubble screen generated by releasing compressed air from a submerged multiple parallel manifold Rising bubbles induce vertical current, which produces horizontal currents flowing away from the bubble-screen area in both directions. Near bottom, the corresponding currents flow toward the bubble screen, thus completing the circulation pattern. The surface current moving against the direction of wave propagation causes some attenuation of the waves. It becomes more effective as the relative depth (d/ L) increases (short-period waves in deep water). With the same air-discharge, the multiple parallel manifold can be more effective for the attenuation of longer waves through optimum arrangement of manifold number. installation depth, manifold gap, etc. The pneumatic breakwater will give a wide utilization as a device for protecting harbor facilities and as a simple, mobile breakwater.

  • There are many factors that can cause problems in the application of the lightweight air-trapped soil in the field. Temperature is one of them. However, the effect of temperature on the characteristics of lightweight air-trapped soil has not been studied. Thus, this experimental study is conducted. This study considers three different unit weights of lightweight air-trapped soils, 6, 8, and 10 kN/$m^3$ which are mostly applied to the field. The lightweight air-trapped soil specimens are cured in the condition of different temperatures based on the characteristic of temperature of Korea. The unconfined compression tests are conducted on the prepared specimens. The settlement behavior of lightweight air-trapped soil on temperature is observed. A photograph is taken using SEM to determine the transformation of air-foams inside the lightweight air-trapped soil on curing temperature. As the results, the effect of curing temperature on the characteristics of lightweight air-trapped soil including compressive strength, settlement, and formation of air-foams is confirmed. Finally, based on this study, the allowable curing temperature of $8^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ which can guarantee the quality of lightweight air-trapped soil is proposed.

  • The mechanical characteristic of Lightweight Foamed Soil(LWFS) are investigated in this research. LWFS is composed of the in-suit soil, cement and foam to reduce the unit-weight and increase compressive strength. The unconfined compressive tests are carried out on the prepared specimens of LWFS with various soil types to investigate the relationship between compressive strength of LWFS and physical properties of soil. The result indicate that coefficient of gradation($C_g$) and liquid limit(LL) are more important factor affecting compressive strength than other physical properties of soil and coefficient of gradation($C_g$) and liquid limit(LL) can standard to determine the optical soil among the in-situ soils for LWFS.

  • This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of reinforced lightweight soil (RLS) using waste fishing net. RLS used in this experiment consists of dredged soil taken from construction site of Busan New Port, cement, air foam and waste fishing net. Several series of laboratory tests were performed to compare behavior characteristics between RLS and unreinforced lightweight soil, in which the reinforced effect by waste fishing net on RLS was evaluated. The experimental results of RLS indicated that the stress-strain relationship and the unconfined compressive strength are strongly influenced by the content of waste fishing net. Compressive strength of RLS Increased with the increase in curing time and generally increased by adding waste fishing net, but the amount of increase in compressive strength was not proportional to the content of waste fishing net. In this test, the maximum increase in compressive strength was obtained at 0.25% content of waste fishing net. On the other hand, water content of RLS rapidly decreased up to 7 days of curing time and converged to constant value.

  • In this research, the behavior characteristics of cement mixing lightweight soil (CMLS) for recycling of dredged soil in the Nakdong River estuary are experimentally investigated. CMLS is composed of the dredged soil from Nakdong River estuary, cement, and air foam. For this purpose, uniaxial compression tests are carried out for artificially prepared specimens of CMLS, with various initial water contents, cement contents, and mixing ratio of dredged soils. The experimental results of CMLS indicated that the compressive strength is strongly influenced by the cement contents, rather than water contents and air foam. Compressive strength of CMLS increased with an increase in cement content, while it decreased with an increase in water content and air foam content. It was also found that the modulus of deformation E50 was in a range of 44 to 128 times greater than the value of uniaxial compressive strength, cured in 28 days.

  • This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of composite geo-material which was developed to reuse both dredged soils and bottom ash. The composite geo-material used in this experiment consists of dredged soil taken from the construction site of Busan New Port, cement, air foam and bottom ash. Bottom ash is a by-product generated at the Samcheonpo thermal power plant. Several series of laboratory tests were performed to investigate behavior characteristics of composite gee-material, in particular the reinforcing effect by mixing bottom ash. The experimental results of composite geo-material indicated that the stress-strain relationship and the unconfined compressive strength are strongly influenced by mixing conditions. Especially it was observed that the compressive strength of composite geo-material increased with an increase in bottom ash content due to reinforcing effect by the bottom ash. Compressive strength of composite geo-material increased with the increase in curing time. The 28-day strength of composite geo-material is $1.7{\sim}1.8$ times higher than the 7-day strength. The moist unit weight strongly depended on air-foam content as well as bottom ash content added to the composite goo-material. In composite geo-material, secant modulus ($E_{50}$) also increased as its compressive strength increased due to the inclusion of bottom ash.

  • Characteristics of bubble driven wakes were investigated in a simulated GTL process(0.102 m ${\times}$ 1.5 m in height) with viscous liquid medium. Effects of gas velocity(0.04 ~ 0.12 m/s) and liquid viscosity(0.001 ~ 0.050 $Pa{\cdot}s$) on the wake characteristics such as rising velocity, frequency, size and holdup were determined by employing a resistivity probe method. The wake phase formed behind the rising multi-bubbles as well as single bubbles were detected effectively from the conductivity fluctuations measured by the probe. Compressed, filtered and regulated air and aqueous solutions of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose(CMC) were used as a dispersed gas phase and a continuous liquid medium, respectively. It was found that the rising velocity and size of wake phase increased with an increase in gas velocity or liquid viscosity. The holdup and frequency of wake phase increased with increasing gas velocity due to the increase of gas input into the process with increasing gas velocity. However, the values of holdup and frequency of wake phase decreased with increasing liquid viscosity, since the size of bubbles and thus that of wakes increased with increasing liquid viscosity. The ratio of wake holdup to that of gas phase, which was in the range of 0.25 ~ 0.48, increased with an increase in liquid viscosity but decreased with gas velocity. The wake characteristics were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions.
