  • This study deals with the conventional consolidation methods like preloading and vertical drains. For it, Two different mechanism, i.e., increasing of permeability and evaporating of pore water were studied. The marine clays excavated in Incheon were heated at low temperature($90^{\circ}C$) to increase the permeability. Also, Microwave oven and high-temperature electric heater were used for pore water evaporation. Several points raised from the experiments. To fix them, the electric heating system was revised to upgrade the field application and drain efficiency of pore water, and the marine clays were heated by revised electric heater at high temperature($250^{\circ}C$). From Experimental result showed that results, high-temperature heater induced the pore water evaporation and displayed the excellent consolidation behavior. In addition, the cone index of heated clays were increased about 19 times, which suggested that electric heating system could be applied for ensuring the trafficability of heavy equipments.

  • In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of secondary consolidation in the soft clay ground, oedometer tests were carried out in a normally consolidated condition, and the consolidation characteristics of the soft clay ground were examined by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) based on the Elasto-Viscous model proposed by Yoshikuni. The consolidation tests adjusted the consolidation load increment ratio(${\Delta}p/p_0$) to 1.0 for the four cases with initial consolidation pressures of 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 kgf/$cm^2$. The long-term consolidation tests were examined by the tests that changed the load increment ratio to clarify the effect of consolidation load increment. Although the numerical analysis was delayed in the primary consolidation process, from the result of the numerical analysis of the laboratory tests, the applicability of the Elasto-Viscous model was verified from the agreement of the secondary consolidation process. Based on the developing of model ground consist of general soft clay, influences of consoliation parameters on the consolidation characteristics were studied by the numerical analysis.

  • This paper is to investigate the removal of the smear at elevated temperatures. This study utilized both small cylinder cell and large consolidometer apparatus to investigate the combination of PVD with heat and without heat. Two types of heaters are used in this study. The heater drain made of copper tube is used for all tests except large consolidometer and flexible wire heater is used for large consolidometer. Specimens demonstrated volume contraction upon heat and without heat. This contraction is dependent on temperature magnitude. When the specimen is heated, the magnitude of settlements is higher and rate of consolidation is faster. After treatment using PVD combined without heat and with heat for undisturbed specimens the $C_h$ values obtained were $3.45m^2/yr$ and $3.83m^2/yr$, respectively, from $3.2m^2/yr$ before treatment. The $K_h/K_s$ ratios were 3 for the specimen without heat and 2 for the specimen with heat. Similarly, in reconstituted specimens without heat and with heat, the $C_h$ values were $2.1m^2/yr$ and $2.5m^2/yr$ with $K_h/K_s$ ratios of 1.75 and 1.5, respectively.

  • Many researchers reported that artesian pressure exists in thick soft ground of Busan Nakdong river estuary. Artesian pressure in soft ground could affect rate of consolidation, settlement and drainage capasity of prefabricated vertical drain(PVD). This paper investigated consolidation behaviors of soft ground with partially penetrated PVD subjected to artesian pressure. Laboratory tests with 1-dimensional large column equipment and their numerical analyses were carried out. Test results showed that the consolidation settlement of clay ground with artesian pressure was higher than that without artesian pressure. Due to artesian pressure, the dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure was reduced in soft ground with artesian pressure, especially at bottom part of clay ground. Numerical results were in good agreement with experimental test results.

  • To simulate the soft ground improved by vertical drain method and to investigate the effect of overlapping smear on subsequent consolidation behavior, a series of consolidation tests with a large consolidation chamber and mandrel insertion device were conducted. Based on the test result, numerical analysis was also performed to analyze the efficiency of the vertical drain method. Laboratory test and numerical analysis results showed that the effect of smear zone increased consolidation settlement but the overlapping smear zone decreased the consolidation settlement. In addition, vertical drain accelerated consolidation rate but narrowing the drain spacing did not affect the consolidation rate because of the effect of smear. The efficiency of consolidation rather decreased substantially when the smear zone was overlapped.

  • In this study, the in-situ model test has been conducted and used to estimate and analyze consolidation behavior of the ground by using the miniature test that reconstructs economically geotechnical behavior of in-situ full scale structure. To analogize the relation among effective stress, void ratio and coefficient of permeability at the self-weight consolidation stage, the low stress seepage consolidation test has been conducted and the involution function of constitutive equation had been obtained from the result of the curve fitted seepage consolidation test result. As a result of the numerical analysis that had been conducted on the representative section using a constitute equation, final settlement was similar with those of self-weight consolidation of the centrifugal model test. But, it was more or less smaller. It seems that these trends are caused by the difference between estimated values.

  • In this study, a consolidometer for radially inward drainage under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading was developed. Their analytical solutions for evaluating consolidation characteristics of soils were also derived. With reconstituted kaolinite samples, comparative tests of the developed CRS loading consolidation in radially inward drainage together with incremental loading (IL) consolidation in radially inward, vertical and radially outward drainages and CRS loading consolidation in radially outward and vertical drainages were carried out. From the test results, It is confirmed that the results of the developed consolidometer were not only in good agreement with those of other consolidation tests but also they were more stable and reliable with less sample disturbance effect.

  • Marine sediment capping is a technique where clean sand is placed over contaminated sediment to reduce the migration of contaminants to the environment. The design of in-situ caps placed over marine sediment must take into consideration the self-weight consolidation of the cap and the consolidation of the sediment as a result of adding the cap layer. Centrifuge tests were adopted to simulate the effects of consolidation settlement of capped marine sediment caused by the placement of a clean sand layer. The modeling of models technique was utilized to verify the correct modeling procedures used in this study. Two centrifuge tests were conducted with the same boundary conditions at different gravitational accelerations of 100 g and 50 g. There was good agreement between these tests. It can be concluded that the centrifuge experiment is able to model consolidation settlement of capped marine sediment.
