The horizontal to vertical (H/V) ratio technique in spectral domain is a common useful technique to estimate empirical site transfer function. The technique, originally proposed by Nakamura, is proposed to analyse the surface waves in the micrortremor records. The purpose of this paper is to estimate spectral ratio using observed data at the seismic stations distributed within Southern Korean Peninsula from the Fukuoka earthquake including 11 aftershocks. The results show that most of the stations have fairly good amplification characteristics in low frequency band. However, some of the seismic stations show one (resonant frequency specific to the site) or several local peaks of amplification factors with narrow high frequency band. Even though the site amplification characteristics are important information, we should be careful to analyse the observed ground motions from the seismic stations which have several very high amplification peaks for the deconvolution of seismic source and attenuation parameters.

The blast works for open cuts and underground constructions near urban areas have recently increased complaint of ground vibration, air blast and fly rock. In order to reduce these problems, it is necessary to develop more cautious blasting, or non-blast excavation methods by mechanical power. For these breaker workings instead of blast are sometimes adopted. To compare the characteristics of blast vibration with breaker vibration, the level, range of frequency and spectrum amplifications of each vibration were studied.
In this study, the deformation characteristics of atrtificially fractured joints of granite under normal and shear loading were investigated. To obtain the characteristics of joint deformation, compression and shear tests were performed in the laboratory on three different sizes of rock specimens. The rock used in the experimens was Iksan granite. Joints were produced artificially by fracturing using the apparatus for generating extension-joint. Joint normal deformability was studied by conducting cyclic loading tests on the joints. Joint closure varied non-linearly with normal stress through cyclic loadings. As normal stress increased, the joints gradually reached a state of maximum joint closure. The relation between normal stress and joint closure for mated and unmated joints was well described by the hyperbolic and exponential function, respectively. Joint shear deformability was studied by performing direct shear tests under normal stresses on the joints. it was shown that the behaviour in the prepeak range was non-linear and joint shear stiffness depended on the size of specimen and the normal stress.

Distribution of fracture system is an important factor to analyse instability of jointed rock slope. In the most case of rock slopes, joint distribution properties are related to potential, shape, size and locality of slope failure. The purpose of this paper is to present an application of fracture characterization related to rock slope failure. Fracture data used in this study are collected by scanline survey. Two aspects of fracture characterization for rock slope are handled in this study First, In order to determine the potential and shape of slope failure, trace length of joints is considered as the weighting factor about collected orientation data. Second, Relationship between trace length and spacing is analysed to estimate failure location and size. The distribution of fracture system is directly influenced on wedge failure. It is effective to analyse the orientation of fractures by using weighting factors associated with the trace length of fractures rather than to analyse only that of fractures. It gives a conclusion that the wedge failure occurred along the peak of fracture density(or intensity) cycles.
There has been considerable research dealing with the influence of surface roughness along surfaces of rock discontinuities in relation to the peak shear strength of rock masses. Concepts accepted recently for measuring such strength include estimation of a roughness coefficient such as developed by Barton's studies. The method for estimation the Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) value of a measured roughness profile is subjective. The aim of this research is to estimate the JRC value of the roughness of a surface profile in a rock mass system using an objective method. The study of roughness of surfaces has included measurement of fractal geometric characteristics. Once the irregularity of the surface has been described by the fractal dimension, the spatial variation of the surface irregularities can be described using variogram and drift analysis. An empirical relationships between the roughness profiles of selected JRC ranges and their fractal dimension with variogram and drift were derived. The application of analyses of fractal dimension, variogram and drift was novel for the analysis of roughness profiles. Also, an empirical equation was applied to experimental data.
In order to investigate the effect of progressive collapse of underground circular opening on surface subsidence, laboratory model tests were performed. The modelling materials were sand which has been used as KS standard. Six test models which had respectively different depths of openings were produced. Surface subsidence and horizontal displacements were measured according to progressive collapse of underground opening. Some subsidence prediction method such as NCB method, profile function method and influence function method were considered to predict the subsidence of sand models. The profile function method approximated by Gaussian error function was finally suggested as the most appropriate to sand models.
Permeability was not represented as a simple function of the difference between confining pressure($P_c$) and pore pressure($P_p$). The effective pressure($P_e$) for measurements of the permeability is shown to be $P_c-{\alpha}P_p$, where $\alpha$ is a coefficient of effective pressure. Local values of $\alpha$ were determined at intervals along the pressure path which range 25MPa to 55MPa. The values of $\alpha$ ranged 0.65 to 1.09 for Pocheon granite and 1.20 to 1.43 for Wonju granite. Also, the value of $\alpha$ calculated by the cross-plotting method was 0.90 for Pocheon granite, 1.59 for Wonju granite and 4.35 for jointed Pocheon granite. $\alpha$ was found to be stress-history dependent.
Considering the mechanical cracking in the concrete lining of tunnels occurring in relatively short period of time after the construction, there is a need for the study on the mechanical behavior and the cracking characteristics of double lining support system(shotcrete and concrete lining). For the proposed study, downscaled lining models of Kyung-Bu High Speed Railway tunnels were tested. Most longitudinal cracks at about 93 percentage developed within 30 arch degree from the vault. Cracking load was about 30 percentage of the failure load and the deflection under the cracking load was 10 percentage of the deflection under the failure load. The overbreak around the vault contributed to the reduction of the capacity for cracking and failure by the percentage greater than the reduced effective depth. Of several rock block types considered in this research, the triangular block was the most critical, and the right triangular block under eccentric load was secondly critical for the stability of the tunnel lining system. The dimensionless support reaction curves were derived from the experimental results for single and double lining. The general equation to compute the designed flexural moment was modified.
Rock fragmentation with plasma blasting technique has advantageous properties in contrast to the conventional blasting method in controlling of flying rocks and ground vibrations, when residents are complaining or surrounding structures stay in protection from blasting operations. The experiences show in urban construction works that the plasma blasting is the most possible method to prevent damages and minimize adverse environmnetal impacts. The fragmentation energy level is evaluated by numerical simulation using PFC-2D for various drill hole pattern and tested accordingly to get the feasibility. The energy output of plasma blasting system has been improved to a level of 1 MJ, which can break a 2~3 ㎥ granite boulder or 1.5 m height bench face. Measurements are carried out to get the ground vibration level and propagation equation, so that the control of the blasting operations can be performed more precisely and safely.
