The influence of the plastic flow rules on the elasto-plastic behaviour of a discrete joint element was investigated by performing the numerical direct shear tests under both constant normal displacement and normal displacement conditions. The finite interface elements obeying Plesha’s joint constitutive law was used to allow the relative motion of the rock blocks on the joint surface. Realistic results were obtained in the tests adopting the non-associated flow rule, while the associated flow rule overestimated the joint dilation. To overcome the computational drawbacks coming from the non-symmetric element stiffness matrix in the conventional non-associated plasticity, the symmetric formulation of the tangential stiffness matrix for a non-associated joint element was proposed. The symmetric elasto-plastic matrix it derived by assuming an imaginary equivalent joint with associated flow rule which shows the same plastic response as that of original Joint with non-associated flow rule. The validity of the formulation was confirmed through the numerical direct shear tests under constant normal stress condition.
This study suggests three spatial distribution functions of strength parameters, which can be adopted in the derivation of failure conditions for transversely isotropic rocks. All three proposed functions, which are the oblate spheroidal function, the exponential function, and the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor, consist of two model parameters. With assumption that the cohesion and friction angle can be described by the proposed distribution functions, the transversely isotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is formulated and used as a failure condition in the simulation of the conventional triaxial tests. The simulation results confirm that the failure criteria incorporating the proposed distribution functions could reproduce the general trend in the variations of the axial stress at failure and the directions of failure planes with varying inclination of the weankness planes and confining pressure. Among three distribution functions, the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor yields the highest axial strength, while the axial strength estimated by the oblate spheroidal distribution function is the lowest.
Magnesium is one of the light weight materials, which can improve fuel economy and reduce emissions in automotive industry. Recently, magnesium alloys have gained considerable attention due to good mechanical properties. In this work, we have performed an explosive welding using the magnesium alloys (AZ31) and stainless steel (SUS 304). As a result, SUS304/AZ31 were successfully combined each other; however, a resolidified interlayer was observed at the point of welded layer. To reduce the resolidified interlayer, we have changed the thickness (0.5 mm and 1 mm) of stainless steel, distance (45 mm and 60 mm) between explosive and the center of materials and initial angle ($20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$) of explosive. In the case of the thickness 0.5 mm and angle of $30^{\circ}$, the resolidfied interlayer was not observed due to the increase of distance from the explosive. To accurately estimate the resolidified interlayer, electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) method and hardness were used. For the EPMA analysis, mixed materials were confirmed at the resolidified interlayer, and the measurement exhibited the middle value compared with the AZ31 and SUS304.
Force induced by the natural ventilation in tunnel is likely to generate adverse influences on the airflow during the normal operation and create even more unfavorable circumstances during the tunnel fire. The influence of the natural ventilation is required to take into account in designing and operating the ventilation as well as safety systems. The magnitude of natural ventilation force depends on a variety of factors associated with the topographical, meteorological and physical features of tunnel. Unfortunately, at this moment those are difficult to quantify and none of the countries has suggested its estimation method in the design guideline. This study aims at quantifying the natural ventilation force at a local highway tunnel by three different methods. The first method employes direct measurement of the pressure at portals, while the second applies a stepwise approach to eliminate the piston effect ahead of deriving the natural ventilation force and the third method uses the concept of barometric barrier.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of chemical weathering on the granite and orthogneiss in Wonju area based on accelerated artificial chemical weathering. The rock samples were scrutinized the variation of index properties and ion exchanges caused by artificial chemical weathering which was implemented with leaching test for 170 days using double soxhlet extractor. The differential weathering and decrease of p wave velocity were obtained by weathering process without significant changes of porosity. In case of granite samples, the uniaxial compression strength was reduced by 20% and 16% for the F-grade and SW-grade, respectively. For MW-grade granite, however, was not able to examine the effect of strength reduction due to lack of sample number. Also, for orthogneiss, it is difficult to compare the values of uniaxial compressive strength between before and after the test because of its strong anisotropy.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate an effect of ground vibration caused by blasting on the concrete brick structure. For the purpose, dynamic response time-history of the structure assumed single degree of freedom (SDOF) system and vibration time-history directly measured from the structure were examined, using Newmark $\beta$ method based on data measured at ground. The time-history was interpreted from the measured data of ground and structure in single hole blasting. Vibration magnitude between ground vibration and structure in single hole blasting and 20 ms interval blasting was about three times and was shown larger vibration on the structure. By time-history analysis of structure dynamic response, the value was almost the same one with the data measured from the structure. It indicates that the vibration characteristics of structures may be predicted on the basis of the ground vibration data measured from the sub-ground of structure.
Double Plug is constructed for preventing mixing of two different oils between two compartments in the underground oil storage cavern. And the gas and oil tightness of double plug is tested from the measurement of water leakage from double plug after the completion of double plug water filling. If water leakage is underestimated, it can increase construction cost and if water leakage is overestimated, it can increase operating cost. Therefore, optimum water leakage should be estimated to cut down the cost. In this study, hydraulic stability analysis was conducted to consider permeable properties of rock mass around double plugs and a water leak rate from double plug was estimated from the hydraulic stability analysis and case study. Finally, the reliability of estimation of water leak rate was proven by comparing estimated water leak rate with measured data.
Inversion result of geophysical data given as a block type was geostatistically simulated with borehole observation given as a point type and was applied to the rock classifying map. The geophysical data generally involved secondary information for the target material and were obtained for overall region. In contrast, borehole data provided direct information for the target material, but tended to be effective only for a narrow range of region and were dealt as a point type. Integrated simulation or kriging interpolation of these two different kinds of information required the covariance for point-point, point-block and block-block. Using the Bssim module included in SGeMS software, integrated result of geophysical data and borehole data were obtained. The results were then compared with the method of geostatistical inversion proposed by authors. Downscaling method used in this study showed relatively more flexible than the geostatistical inversion.
The discrete element code in 2-D, PFC2D, has been used as a tool to simulate various phenomena in rock mechanics and rock engineering. However, the code has an disadvantage that procedure to determine micro-parameters, namely properties of particles and contacts is repetitive and time-consuming. In this study, we analyzed the effect of micro-parameters(for generation of a contact-bonded model) on macro-properties(that were measured numerically by uniaxial compressive test). Based on the analysis, also, the time-saving and reliable method was suggested to determine a complete set of micro-parameters. In order to verify the suggested method, numerical specimens were generated in PFC2D for 10 different rock types at home and abroad. By the two trials for each specimen, in the result, the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and uniaxial compressive strength could be reproduced with being in relative error by about 5% to the values obtained by laboratory tests.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of cleavages on indirect tensile strength (ITS) of the granite. Brazilian disc tests and ring tests with three different hole sizes were performed. 2D DEM (Discrete Element Method) simulation was employed to further understand the failure process during the tests and the mechanism behind. Results show that ITS decreases across hardway, grain and rift cleavage. Measured average ITS from ring tests is about 2.5 ~ 6.4 times of those measured from Brazilian disc tests, and it decreases with increasing ratio of diameters of inner hole and specimen. Failure pattern in ring tests is influenced by both hole size and relative positions of cleavages parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction.
