  • There are three hydrometallurgical methods by which pure alumina can be prepared, such as hydrolysis of aluminum alkoxides, thermal decomposition of ammonium alum and thermal cracking of ammonium aluminum carbonate (AACH). The effect of solution pH and temperature and the nature of the impurities on the phase transition and the purity of the alumina thus produced was investigated. Hydrolysis of aluminum alkoxides and thermal decomposition of ammonium alum produce ${\alpha}$ and ${\gamma}$ alumina, while only ${\alpha}$ alumina can be produced by thermal cracking of AACH.

  • The production rates of leavening gases and textures of cookies were investigated with various chemical leavening agents(baking powders). The chemical leavening agents could be divided into three group of a fast-acting group such as potassium bicarbonate, tartaric acid, aluminium ammonium sulfate, and fumaric acid, a slow-acting group such as ammonium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, $glucono-{\delta}-lactone$, and ammonium chloride. and a double-acting group such as anhydro monocalcium phosphate, disodium dihydrogenpyrophosphate, and aluminium potassium sulfate according to the different production rate of gases. The leavening rate of ammonium bicarbonate, which was the highest of all leavening agents used in this experiment, was 131.25%. But its after-taste in a cookie was not good due to the residual ammonia. $Glucono-{\delta}-lactone$ only had no after-taste. The higher leavening rate, the more peaks in texture profile graph. Ammonium bicarbonate showed the most peaks in this experiment. It was found that the number of peak had correlation with brittleness of cookies $(r^2=0.8176)$ and brittleness of cookies was different as to various chemical leavening agents.

  • This investigation was undertaken to study the synthesis of Boehmite by the hydrothermal homogeneous precipitation reaction of alum with urea. The reactions were carried out at a temperature of 100 to $250^{\circ}C$, 1 : 2 to 1 : 5 in a mole ratio of alum to urea and a reaction time of 0.5 to 20 hrs. The reaction precipitates were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope, and chemical analysis. Under the condition of mole ratio 1 : 4 of alum to urea, the spherical and monodispersed amorphous aluminum sulfate hydrate was formed at $100^{\circ}C$, the mixture of spherical amorphous aluminum sulfate hydrate and Boehmite was formed at $150^{\circ}C$, Boehmite was formed at above $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. The reaction precipitates were dense, superior precipitable and filterable particle of average $2-4{\mu}m$.
