  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. In this study, we investigated the influence of alkali activator and superplasticizer on the flowability and compressive strength of the alkali-activated mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete using blast furnace slag. In view of the results, we found out that the type and mixture ratio of alkali activator, the type and adding order of superplasticizer results to be significant factors. When cementless alkali-activated mortar using blast furnace slag manufactured with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, and added superplasticizer before alkali activator in the mixer, we can be secured workability with 180 mm of flow during 1 hours and compressive strength of about 50 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing condition at age of 28days.

But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. However, most study deal only with alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag or fly ash, as for the combined use of the both, little information is reported. In this study, we investigated the influence of mixture ratio of fly ash/ blast furnace slag tand curing condition on the flowability and compressive strength of mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that the mixture ratio of fly ash/blast furnace slag always results to be significant factors. But the influence of curing temperature in the strength development of mortar is lower than the contribution due to other factors. At the age of 28days, the mixture 50% fly ash and 50% ground granulated blast furnace slag activated with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, develop compressive strength of about 65 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing.

  • In this study, the mixing characteristics of water glass and additives (Si, alkali metal), which are one of the main raw materials of silicate based binder used in the production of molds during casting process, were examined. Molecular structures of water glass, additives and mixtures were analyzed FT-IR and viscosity measurements and their correlation were compared. The addition of Si source to the water glass accelerated the Si networking in the material and increased the viscosity. When the alkali metal was added, the viscosity of the water glass decreased by suppressing the Si networking of the water glass. Viscosities of the water glass and lithium silicate (LS) mixtures increased when the content of LS was less than 20 wt% and gradually decreased when the content was more than 20 wt%. By adding KOH to the water glass, the viscosity could be lowered and it could be used effectively to mix with colloidal silica (CS) or potassium methyl siliconate (PMS).

  • Since there are $OH^-,\;[SiO_4]^{4-}$ ion of high concentration at early hydration in the system added with activator (NaOH+$Na_2OSiO_2$) in the blast furnace slag, different from cement hydration, hydration progresses fast without induction period and forms reaction rim around the blast furnace slag grain. $0.6{\mu}m$ reaction rim was formed around the blast furnace slag grain from the 1 day of reaction period, and the thickness of reaction rim increases over the reaction time, growing to $1{\mu}m$ on the 28 days. Unreacted blast furnace slag grain deformed from angular shape to the spherical shape. Mole ratio of Ca/Si tends to decrease from inside of blast furnace slag grain to reaction rim. Difference of Ca/Si mole ratio between reaction rim and inside the blast furnace slag grain decreased and generated hydrate was a poor crystalline CSH(I) with Ca/Si mole ratio less than 1.5.

  • It is essential every concrete structure should continue to perform its intended functions, that is maintain its required strength and durability, during the service life. However, deterioration occurs more progressively from the outside of concrete exposed to severe conditions. Deterioration in the concrete structure is due to carbonation and chloride ion attack. Therefore, concrete structure is needed to surface protection for increase durability using impregnant. Impregnant classify into two large groups in polymeric and silicate materials. Silicate impregnant is included silane and alkali silicate(sodium and lithium silicate). Thus, this study is concerned with carbonation and chloride ion resistance of self cleaning hydrophilic impregnant of concrete structure using lithium and potassium silicate. From the experimental test result, lithium and potassium silicate have a good properties as a carbonation and chloride ion resistance. Lithium and potassium silicate make good use of hydrophilic impregnant.

  • Portland cement production-1.5billion tonnes yearly worldwide-contributes substantially to global atmospheric pollution(7% of total of $CO_2$ emissions). Attempts to increase the utilization of fly ash, by-products from thermal power plant to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of fly ash is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the sources of material such as fly ash, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effect reduction of $CO_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the compressive strength of mortar on alkaline activator and curing condition in oder to develop cementless fly ash based alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that it was possible for us to make alkali-activated mortar with 70MPa at the age of 28days by using alkaline activator manufactured as 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate and applying the atmospheric curing after high temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ for 48hours.

  • We carried out the effect verification of conservation treatment focusing on basement rock of alkali granite at the Yukjonbul (two-pairs of Buddha Triads) carved on rock cliff of Samneung valley in Namsan mountain of Gyeongju. The conservation treatments were used to ethylsilicate-type rock consolidant and epoxy-type resin. It is treatment method that the epoxy-type resin have been applied one time into the exfoliation area, after rock consolidation treatment have been worked for three times. As the result of measuring ultrasonic velocity, P-wave velocity of the exfoliation area was relatively increased after applied the conservation treatments. The ultrasonic velocity of all area was increased as 27.8%. This result has been proved with consolidation effects by consolidant and filler for stone cultural heritages. The treatment method should be worked about three time to consolidate sufficiently for rocks.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the manufacturing possibility of non-cement mortar using blast furnace slag and alkali accelerator. In this experimental study, the blast furnace slag which is the by-product of the steel industry substitute for cement, and the potassium hydroxide(KOH), calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) and sodium hydroxide(NaOH) as stimulus were added to each specimen. And the analysis on reaction property of non-cement mortar was conducted by measurement such as flexural and compressive strength, XRD, EDS and SEM. From the test results, it can be founded that $SiO_2$ and CaO included in the blast furnace slag are released and make the calcium silicate hydrate like the hydration reaction of the cement. Also, the continued study is need to reduce emission of $CO_2$ because of major content in filed of the building construction.

  • This study demonstrates the consolidation effect of ethylsilicate consolidants considering material characteristics and weathering degree of Samneunggyeseongakyukjonbul(rock-carved Yukjonbul Buddha in Samneung Valley) in Namsan, Gyeongju. The buddha statue is composed of alkali feldspar granite and contains numerous sets of joint with exfoliation and granular disintegration, therefore the statue is necessary to be treated for surface strength. The laboratory and in-situ tests of consolidation effect showed more increase of ultrasonic velocity that KSE 300, a relatively highly concentrated consolidant, performed more increase of ultrasonic velocity and decrease of porosity than others after treatments in weathered granite. And the consolidated rock with OH 100 was more resistant to salt weathering. For the buddha statues, KSE 300 is more applicable to enhance surface strength because it showed higher consolidation effect for long term than OH 100 and the statues has not been weathered by salts.
