  • In this paper, it is tested that an individual is able to be identified with finger face images and the results are presented. Special operators, FFG(Facet Function Gradient) masks by which the gradient of a facet function fit on a gray levels of image patches can be computed are used and a new procedure named F-algorithm is introduced to match the finger face images. The finger face image is divided into the equal subregions and each subregions are divided into equal patches with this algorithm. The FFG masks are used for convolution operation over each patch to produce scalar values. These values from a feature matrix, and the identity of fingers is determined by a norm of the elements of the feature matrices. The distribution of the norms shows conspicuous differences between the pairs of hand images of the same persons and the pairs of the different persons. This is a result to prove the ability of discrimination with the finger face image. An identification rate of 95.0% is obtained as a result of the test in which 500 hand images taken from 100 persons are processed through F-algorithm. It is affirmed that the finger face reveals to be such a good biometrics as other hand parts owing to the ability of discrimination and the identification rate.

  • Recently, the research on the construction of optical Internet backbone networks using WDM has been actively progressed. In this paper, we propose the offset based service-differentiation scheme in optical burst switching (OBS) networks. We classify the services into two classes; high class and low class. The proposed scheme decides the offset time of high class so as to satisfy the required burst loss rate (BLR) of services according to the service-differentiation ratio (SDR). The SDR may be set depending on the environment of OBS network and user's requirements, our scheme decides the BLR of high class by using the required SDR and conservation law. Finally, we use the offset time decision (OTD) algorithm to determine the offset time of high class. The proposed scheme is evaluated through simulation. The result of simulation is compared with that of analysis to verify the proposed scheme.

  • This paper proposes a new class of image restoration on the Ising modeled binary 'Takbon' image by the flexible line-fitting ICM(Iterated conditional modes) method. Basically 'Takbon' image need be divided into two extreme regions, information and background one due to its stroke combinations. The main idea is the line process, comparing with the conventional ICM approaches which were based on partially rectangular structured point process. For calculating geometrical mechanism, we have defined line-fitting functions at each current pixel array which form the set of linear lines with gradients and lengths. By applying the Bayes' decision to this set, the region of the current pixel is decided as one of the binary levels. In this case, their statistical reiteration for distinct tracking between intra and extra region offers a criterion to decide the attachment at each step. Finally simulations using the binary 'Takbon' image are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our new algorithm

  • The biodiversity research of barley, a functional food, is proceeding to conserve germplasms and develop new cultivar of barley to improve its functional effects. In this study, with 25,104 barley germplasms in the National Agrobiodiversity Center, South Korea, the biodiversity index of species was much lower (1.17) than the origins (24.73) because of the presence of a biased species, Hordeum vulgare subsp. vulgare, but the species and origin of germplasms were significantly different with regard to genetic traits. In the clustering analysis based on genetic traits, we found that 97% barley germplasms could mostly be distributed between 1~7 clusters out of a total of 15 clusters; 'normal and uzu type', 'lodging', and 'loose smut' were commonly represented in the 1~7 clusters and some clusters showed specific differences in five genetic traits including 'growth habit'. In correlation of each genetic trait, the infection of 'barley yellow mosaic virus' was highly correlated to 'number of grains per spike'. '1000 grain weight' was weakly correlated with seven genetic traits including 'number of grains per spike'. Our analysis for barley's biodiversity can provide a useful guide to the species' phenotypes that need to be collected to conserve biodiversity and to breed new barley varieties.
