  • A method is developed to evaluate partial safety factors for armor units, by which uncertainties of random variables in reliability function as well as wave height distribution with service periods could take into account straightforwardly. It is found that partial safety factors for resistance and wave height are correctly increased with improving target levels on failure of coastal structures at the same return and service periods. Therefore, it nay be possible to determine design variables through the same processes as those of deterministic method by using the partial safety factors for resistance and wave height evaluated in this paper, since uncertainties of random variables and the effects of service periods and target probability failure are directly considered in the processes of evaluation of partial safety factors.

  • A probability of failure of armor units on rubbJe-mound breakwater are evaluated by using the direct method for reliability analysis, which is represented as a function of safety factor that has been extensively used in practical design. The reliability function is fonnulated based on Hudson formula suggested for designing the stable size of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater. Several kinds of stability coefficient are applied separately to calculate the probability of failure with respect to the type of armor units, breaking/nonbreaking and the correlation coefficients between random variables. [n addition, the sensitivity analyses are carried out to investigate quantitatively into the effects of each random variable in the reliability function on the probability of failure.

  • Generally, the coefficients of common holding power of an anchor and a chain cable have been reported too higher in their values in the safety of the shiphandling. The model experiment was carried out to find the most suitable coefficients of holding power of the Hall's type anchor and the chain cable in various kinds of seabed. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) The coefficients of holding power of the anchor and the chain cable were 4.05, 0.75 in the mud, 3.95, 0.66 in the sand and 3.61, 0.72 in the pebbles respectively. 2) The experimental coefficients of holding power of the anchor and the chain cable were 0.4~0.6 times the values of the coefficients of common holding power. They were almost same as the values of the coefficients of safe holding power in the mud and the sand, but in case of the pebbles, they were 1.4~1.8 times the values of the coefficients of safe holding power. 3) It is considered useful for the safety of the shiphandling to draw curves of the holding power with maximum limits holding power at the various wind forces and the coefficients of holding power.

  • The partial safety factors of armor stones have been calculated on the assumption that all random variables are independent one another. However, wave height and wave steepness are not independent in the van der Meer's formula of armor stones but they are correlated. In the present study, we calculated the partial safety factors considering the correlation and compared them with those of other researchers who did not consider the correlation. The correlation between wave height and steepness is closely related to the variability of wave period. As the variability of wave period decreases, the correlation between wave height and steepness becomes strong, and hence the calculation results with and without consideration of the correlation show more difference. Therefore, the correlation should be taken into account in the calculation of partial safety factors in the area where the variability of wave period is small.

  • Recently, the LRFD and the PSF based on structural reliability assessment have been applied to NPP designs in behalf of the conventional deterministic design methods. In the risk-informed structural integrity, it is especially possible to optimize design procedures considering cost, manufacturing and maintenance because the structural reliability concepts have confirmed the reliability for which a designer aims. Generally, in order to evaluate the PSF, the LRFD which is the design concept for evaluating safety factors respectively on the limit state function including load and resistance. This study certifies the concept and its applications of the PSF using the LRFD based on the structural reliability engineering.

  • For the running safety assessment of Saemaul train passing through curves, an analysis model for multibody system has been developed. By using this model and ADAMS/Rail, sensitivity analyses depending on the variation of parameters related to the derailment coefficients have been conducted. At low speed, the derailment coefficient and the unload ratio of right wheel showed higher than left wheel, while those of left wheel showed higher than right wheel at high speed. According to decrease of curve radius, the derailment coefficient and the unload ratio were increased. When the length of transition curve was increased, the derailment coefficient was increased but there was no change on the unload ratio. According to the increase of cant, the derailment coefficient and the unload rate were increased.

  • Calibration of load-resistance factors for the limit state design of front covered caisson breakwaters were presented. Reliability analysis of the breakwaters which are constructed in Korean coast was conducted. Then, partial safety factors and load-resistance factors were sequentially calculated according to target reliability index. Load resistance factors were optimized to give one set of factor for limit state design of breakwater. The breakwaters were redesigned by using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether reliability indices larger than the target value. Finally, load-resistance factors were compared with foreign country's code for verification.

  • Previous finite element studies have shown that AASHTO Standard load distribution factor (LDF) equations appear to be conservative for longer spans and larger girder spacing, but too permissible for short spans and girder spacing. AASHTO LRFD specification defines the distribution factor equation for girder spacing, span length, slab thickness, and longitudinal stiffness. However, this equation requires an iterative procedure to correctly determine the LDF value due to an initially unknown longitudinal stiffness parameter. This study presents a simplified LDF equation for interior and exterior girders of two-span continuous I-girder bridges that does not require an iterative design procedure. The finite element method was used to investigate the effect of girder spacing, span length, slab thickness, slab width, and spacing and size of bracing. The computer program, GTSTRUDL, was used to idealize the bridge superstructures as the eccentric beam model, the concrete slab by quadrilateral shell elements, steel girders by space frame members, and the composite action between these elements by rigid links. The distribution factors obtained from these analyses were compared with those from the AASHTO Standard and LRFD methods. It was observed through the parametric studies that girder spacing, span length, and slab thickness were the dominant parameters compared with others. The LRFD distribution factor for the interior girder was found to be conservative in most cases, whereas the factor for the exterior girder to be unconservative in longer spans. Furthermore, a regression analysis was performed to develop simplified LDF formulas. The formulas developed in this study produced LDF values that are always conservative to those from the finite element method and are generally smaller than the LDF values obtained from the AASHTO LRFD specification. The proposed simplified equation will assist bridge engineers in predicting the actual LDF in two-span continuous I-girder bridges.

  • The safety valve used in LNG/LNG-FPSO ships plays an important role in maintaining a fixed level of pressure by emitting LNG gas out of the pipes in the LNG piping system. The discharge coefficient is regarded as the most important factor in the valve performance. To satisfy the ship's classification, the discharge coefficient of the safety valve must usually be over 0.8. Despite the importance of understanding the flow phenomena inside the safety valve, the valve design is usually based on experience and experiments. We carried out a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigation using the ANSYS-CFX software. We observed the flow phenomena inside the valve and measured the discharge coefficients according to changes in the valve lift, which is the distance between the exit of the nozzle and the lower part of the disc plate. We verified our CFD results for the discharge coefficients using available experimental data.
