  • The present study aimed to examine the moderating effects of marital satisfaction (MS) on the association between the number of chronic disease (CD) and depressive symptoms (DS) among ol der men and women. The 6th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing was utilized and the sample was married men (N=585) and women (N=460) aged 65 and over. Multiple regression analysis using SPSS WIN 25.0 and Process Macro was used to test moderating effects of MS. Control variables were age, education, household income, parent-child relationship satisfaction, self-rated health, cognitive function, current smoking status and CD of spouse. Resul ts from elderly men showed the moderating effect of MS was significant. Specifically, those with more CD were more likely to report higher level of DS in the low MS group. However, the effect of CD on DS was not significant in the high MS group. Results from elderly women showed the moderating effect of MS was not significant. This study showed the moderating effect of MS on the association between CD and DS differed by gender in later life. It suggests practical intervention to utilize the resources of spouses is in need to promote mentally healthy aging even though having chronically ill in later life.

  • This study aimed to investigate the association between social support and the change of depressive symptoms and its difference by gender among Korean Baby Boomer. We used the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) 5th (in 2014) and 6th waves (in 2016). Samples were Korean Baby Boomer (born 1955 to 1963) who have spouse and children(N = 1,210). Dependent variable was depressive symptoms and independent variables were four social support variables (spousal relationship satisfaction, parent-child relationship satisfaction, frequency of social contact, and number of participation groups). Interaction variables between social support and gender were also included in the model. Hierarchical regression analysis with the lagged dependent variable was performed. Results showed that the higher the satisfaction of spousal relationship and the satisfaction of parent-child relationship, the less the depressive symptoms increased. All interaction variables were not significant. These findings mean that the support from the spouse and the child is helpful in lowering depressive symptoms, and the associations between social support and depressive symptoms are not different by gender among Baby Boomer. It implies that interventions for enhancing family relationships, especially spousal relationship and parent-child relationship, may be useful to reduce depressive symptoms among Korean Baby Boomer.

  • The number of multi-cultural members, such as immigrant labors, international marriage women are gradually increasing in Japan society. Now it might be said that Japan has become a multi-cultural society. Recently in Japanese kindergartens and nursery schools the numbers of foreign and bi-cultural children are increasing. The aim of this paper is to review the researches on the cultural diversity in the Japan, especially in childcare. Methodology proceeds from a review of related literature to internet-based data and to the statistics issued by the government. Through reviewing them, the problems of teachers' assumptions and the importance of discussions about teachers' competencies to educate minority children and to communicate with their parents were suggested. As a switch over to multi-cultural society is occurring in Japan, the attitude of assimilationism is weakening, and the local community is now beginning to tolerate the multi-cultural childcare. Consequently, It was over to age that is distinguish identity from only nationality.

  • A child's mental health is an important element of his proper emotional development. Abuse of children by parents and peer groups are causes of depression and anxiety in children. These conditions become obstacles to their normal growth process which can be a contributing factor to juvenile delinquency. This study is based in the theoretical background of the relationship between abuse from parents and peer groups and children's emotional health. This information is analyzed through structural equation modeling.

  • The present study aims to investigate the effects of bicultural characteristics and social capital on psychological adaptations such as depression and self-esteem. A survey was conducted on 295 foreign-born mothers and their 305 children, ranging from third to sixth grade in elementary school up to seventh to ninth grade in middle school, residing in South Korea's seven major cities, including the city of Seoul. The results of this research are the following: 1) With regards to factors that influence depression among children in a multicultural family, less support from a friend leads to a larger exposure to multicultural programs. Also, the lower the perceived income level of his or her family, greater is the state of the child's depression. 2) Significant factors that influence self-esteem for multicultural children are friends' support, level of mothers' Korean language proficiency, teachers' support, and numbers of multicultural programs. Two implications may be addressed from this study. One is the need to consider bicultural characteristics and social capital to enhance psychological adaptability for children raised in multicultural families. Another is to apply social support characteristics such as friends' and teachers' support to multicultural programs.

  • The present study examined predictors of children's problem solving using structural equation modeling(SEM). Participants were 410 dyads of 2nd- and 6th-grade children and their mother or father. Children and their parents responded to questionnaires. Instruments were the PSI(Parent Behavior Inventory, 1998), CES-D(Center for Epidemiological Scale-Depression, for children's depression, 1977) Sherer's(1982) self-efficacy scale, and the Problem Solving Inventory(Heppner & Petersen, 1982). In both grades, warmth in parenting behavior affected children's self-efficacy, which in turn contributed to their problem solving. Rejection in parenting behavior had positive effects on problem solving through increasing self-efficacy in 2nd graders only. Results implied importance of self-efficacy and developmentally appropriate parenting to improve children's problem solving.

  • Several studies regarding the effects of academic achievement on mental health problems have been conducted in adolescents but not in elementary school students. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to examine the effects of school achievement on depression in Korean elementary school students. The participants were 1,048, 5th to 6th elementary students in Seoul, Korea. The Spearman correlations between school achievement and depression were -0.31 for boys and -0.37 for girls (p<0.001 for both). After controlling for grader, the family economic status and self-esteem, higher achiever group showed a significantly low risk for depression in boys and girls. This study suggests that the lower school achievement is associated with a depressive mood in Korean elementary students. Therefore, students with lower academic performance are a risk group for depression.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of maternal post-natal depression on children's communication competence, maternal self-efficacy and parenting style. The data on 1,438 pairs of children and their mothers were provided by The Korean Children Panel Study (KCPS). Mothers were assessed by K6(Kessler et al., 2002), The Pearlin Self Efficacy Scale(Pearlin et al., 1981), and The Parental Style Questionnaire(Bornstein, et al., 1996). Children's communication competence was assessed by K-ASQ. The collected data were analyzed with t-test and path analysis. The major results of this study were as follows : (1) Post-natal maternal depression was not directly associated with the children's communication competence. (2) Post-natal maternal depression indirectly influenced the children's communication competence via maternal self-efficacy and the parenting style. The results of this study suggest that post-natal depression within 1 year will not have an effect on the children's communication competence directly, but will indirectly influence it through maternal self-efficacy and the parenting style when the children are 2 years old.
