  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an animal-mediated therapy program on children with developmental disabilities on social skills related to social-emotional development and learning, which are important in modern society. The subjects of the study were children with developmental disabilities at a special school, and the animal-mediated therapy program consisted of 12 sessions. The study was divided into experimental and control groups and conducted pre- and post-test by measurement items. SPSS 25.0 was used to analyze the data. First, children with developmental disabilities in the experimental group who participated in the animal-mediated therapy program showed a significant difference (z=-2.20, p<.05) in the overall social-emotional development compared to the control group, and statistically significant values were found in the subfactors of non-dependence on teachers, interaction with peers, and achievement motivation. Second, the experimental group who received animal-mediated therapy showed a significant effect (z=-2.20, p<.05) in all factors of learning-related social skills. In conclusion, animal-mediated therapy was found to have a positive effect on the social-emotional development and learning-related social skills of children with developmental disabilities. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that more specific and systematic programs should be developed and applied to enhance the social-emotional development and learning-related social skills of children with developmental disabilities for a healthy life.

  • This case study was to examine the effect of the sensory integration therapy on the Goldenhar syndrome child with tactile defensiveness, developmental delay and occupational performance difficulties. The child was 7.10 year old boy. For intervention, four evaluations were used and the results are as follows. First, in Canadian Occupational Performance Measure showed occupational performance goal as reading and writing in upright position. Second, in Short sensory profile and sensory history, significant differences between sensory sensitivity and tactile processing. Third, in Developmental Profile-3 showed delay. Fourth, in Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-2 showed below average. After intervention, the results of which showed a positive changes. Therefore, this case study is found that the sensory integration therapy is effective in the Goldenhar syndrome child with tactile defensiveness and developmental delay.

The subjects in this study were 59 six-graders in an elementary school. Added to this, this study was to understand the course of elementary school children's career development. For the study, research questions on influence of parent's accomplishment pressure and career guidance on children's career development were set up. The study showed three findings. First, there was significant correlations between parent's accomplishment pressure, and career guidance and children's career development. Parent's accomplishment pressure showed a positive correlation with career development and career guidance had a significant correlation with children's career development. The sub factors of career guidance, except for emotional support, were also significantly correlated with the sub factors of children's career development. Second, Parent's accomplishment pressure didn't show significant effect on fitness of career choice, sex-prejudice and pride, but showed significant effects on total career development, career directivity, career comprehension, self-comprehension and self- control. Third, parent's career guidance showed additional impact on children's career development. But emotional support, which is the sub-fact of career guidance, had no correlation with career development.

  • Objective : The objective of this study was to determine a discriminat validity of the Sensory Processing Scale-Children (SPS-C) for children with and without Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Method : The SPS-C was completed by parents of 151 Korean children including 68 typically developing children (control group), 83 children with SPD (known group) in the age range 3-5 years, in South Korea. ANCOVA with sex as covariable was used to identified the difference between the children with typically development and SPD. Results : Sensory processing differences in sensory domains and sensory factors were detected and the gender differences were not effective between typically developing children and children with SPD. Significant differences were found in all sensory domain score and total score except proprioceptive processing in sensory domain. In sensory factors, significant differences were found in overrsensitivity, underresponsivity, and discrimination, but sensory seeking was not significant. SPS-C was a valid assessment tool to identify or screen of SPD in Korea. Conclusion : The psychometric characteristics for the standardization study of SPS-C were presented, and the discriminant validity to screen the children with sensory processing problems was presented as a verified evaluation tool. SPS-C will be helpful in screening, analyzing and interpreting characteristics of sensory processing, and establishing an intervention plan.

  • With using a subsample of 1,373 poor single mothers and their children from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, the present study examined the associations among mothers' economic hardship, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress, child abuse and neglect, and their children's behavior problems, delinquency, and social skill. These families were tracked through follow-up interviews at the time of birth, and when the children were three, five, and nine years old. The results indicated that mothers' economic hardship, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress were significant predictors to determine their children's abuse and neglect. Findings also suggest that higher levels of child abuse and neglect are positively associated with more behavior problems and delinquency, and negatively associated with social skills. Further discussions include policy and services to prevent child abuse and neglect and to alleviate mothers' financial difficulties, depression, and parenting stress.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to identify the experiences of novice occupational therapists working at a child private clinic center in the clinical experience process of sensory integration therapy and to understand the adaptation process in child private clinic center. Methods : The participants were four occupational therapists with less than 1 year of clinical experience. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, and the recorded interview responses were transcribed and analyzed. The analysis of the data was made by phenomenological analytic method suggested by Giorgi. Results : As a result of analyzing the adaptation process of novice occupational therapists working at the child private clinic center, 3 categories, 6 themes, and 16 main meanings were derived. Novice occupational therapists experienced difficulties arising from clinical, obstacles from the working environment, positive factors inside the center, support from outside the center, self-effort, and changes through adaptation experience. Conclusion : Along with changes to the social system and pediatric rehabilitation institution, one's own effort are also required so that novice child occupational therapists working at child private clinic centers can adapt and perform at their roles.

  • Goal of this study is to identify effect of Oral Motor Facilitation Technique(OMFT) on feeding development, tube weaning of PWS baby. Subject was 8months old PWS girl. 2 times of OT, 1 times of OMFT per weeks were provided from July, 2020 to June, 2021. Feeding development and skills was increased and could eat food by mouth after OMFT treatment. Especially, she could eat food by her mouth after 3mts of OMFT and age-appropriated food intake, chewing function, drinking by straw was increased. Through this case study, early detecting and treatment for feeding development of PWS is very important. OMFT is good treatment protocol for increasing feeding development and oral motor skills of PWS.
