  • In this paper, we propose a detection scheme for sinkhole attacks in wireless sensor networks. Sinkhole attack makes packets that flow network pass through attacker. So, Sinkhole attack can be extended to various kind of attacks. We analyze sinkhole attack methods in the networks that use LQI based routing. For the purpose of response to each attack method, we propose methods to detect attacks. Our scheme can work for those sensor networks which use LQI based dynamic routing protocol. And we show the detection of sinkhole attack can be achieved by using a few detector nodes.

  • With fixed sinks, the network stability could be improved while the network life time could be decreased by the rapid energy dissipation around the fixed sink because of the concentrated network traffic from sensor nodes to the fixed sink in wireless sensor network. To address this problem, mobile sinks, which decentralize the network traffic, has received a lot of attention from many researchers recently. Since a mobile sink has a limited period to communicate with each sensor nodes, it is necessary for a scheduling algorithm to provide the fairness of data collection from each sensor nodes. In the paper, we propose the new scheduling algorithm, ASF(Availability based Scheduling scheme for Fair data collection), for the fair data collection by a mobile in the sensor networks. The ASF takes account of the distance between each sensor nodes and the mobile sink as scheduling metric, as well as the amount of collected data from each sensor nodes. Experiment results shows that the ASF improves the fairness of data collection among the sensor nodes, comparing to existing algorithm.

  • The Peltier Module has been used to dissipate the heat from electronic devices and electronic components. In this module, a heat sink is used to release the operating heat into the air outside. This study addressed the heat transfer characteristics for a heat sink with an inner tunnel. Under forced and natural convection conditions, the heat transfer characteristics were different. Therefore, the cooling and heating performances were studied for the heat sink, which has an inner tunnel. The heat transfer conditions were also evaluated by performing an experimental test, which investigated the heat transfer characteristics related to the variance in time and temperature distribution. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics of the heat sink were conducted based on the forced and natural convection and temperature distribution changes. In the cooling experiment, the A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks decreased the temperature of the forced convection than the temperature of natural convection. In the forced and natural convection, the A- and B-shaped decreased to a minimum of $-15^{\circ}C$. Under the forced and natural convection conditions, A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks decreased the temperature when the voltage was increased. In the heating experiment, the A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks increased the temperature of the forced convection than the temperature of natural convection. In forced convection, when the voltage was $15^{\circ}C$, the temperature of the A-shaped cooling pin heat sink increased to $150^{\circ}C$, and the temperature of the B-shaped cooling pin heat sink increased to $145^{\circ}C$. Under forced and natural convection conditions, the A- and B-shaped cooling pin heat sinks showed an increase in temperature with increasing voltage.

  • The mobile sink is most suitable to guarantee the real time processing to events in ubiquitous environment. However it brings many challenges to wireless sensor networks. In particular, the question of how to transfer the collected data to the mobile sink is an important topic in the aspect of effective management of wireless sensor nodes. In this paper, a new data dissemination model is proposed. Since this method uses the home agent and the access node concepts, it provides reliable and efficient data delivery to mobile sink with minimum overhead. In this proposed method, the information of the mobile sink which is constantly moving is informed only to the home agent node and the access node, instead of all sensor nodes. Thus, the collected data from sensor nodes are transferred to the fixed home agent and it sends these data to the mobile sink. Since the confliction phenomenon between data packets in wireless networks could be reduced, the success ratio of data arriving in the mobile sink is highly enhanced. In our experiments, the proposed method reduces the number of broadcast packets so that it saves the amount of energy consumed for transmitting and receiving the data packets. This effect contributes to prolong the lifetime of the wireless sensor networks operated by batteries.

  • The wireless sensor nodes near to the fixed sink node suffer from the quickly exhausted battery energy. To address this problem, the mobile sink node has been applied to distribute the energy consumption into all wireless sensor nodes. However, since the mobile sink node moves, the data collection scheduling scheme is necessary for the sink node to receive the data from all sensor nodes as fair as possible. The application fields of wireless sensor network need the real-time processing. If the uneven data collection occurs in the wireless sensor network, the real-time processing for the urgent events can not be satisfied. In this paper, a new method is proposed to support the lair data collection between all sensor nodes. The proposed method performs the scheduling algorithm based on the resident time of the sink node staying in a radius of communication range and the amount of data transferred already. In this paper, the proposed method and existing data collection scheduling schemes are evaluated in wireless sensor network with the mobile sink node. The result shows that the proposed method provides the best fairness among all data collection schemes.

  • In this study, we numerically investigate the thermal performance of an enhanced radial heat sink with a perforation and chimney structure. We estimate the thermal performance of the enhanced radial heat sink, and compared it with that of a conventional radial heat sink. The results show that the radial heat sink with perforation has a higher thermal performance when either of the diameter and the number of perforations is high. With regards to the radial heat sink with a chimney structure, we investigate primarily the effect of the fin number, and the spacing between the chimney and the base plate on the thermal performance. The results show that there are optimal values for the fin number and the spacing between chimney and base plate. In addition, the enhanced radial heat sinks have maximum thermal performance when facing upward ($0^{\circ}$), while it has worst performance when facing sideward ($90^{\circ}$). The perforation and chimney are shown to cause thermal performance enhancements of 17% and 20%, respectively, compared with a conventional radial heat sink. The proposed method is useful for starting business, and is useful in terms of venture and entrepreneurship.

  • Sinkhole subsidence occurs over abandoned mine workings and can be detrimental to human lives, damage to properties and other surface structures. In this study, simulation of sinkhole development process is performed using special finite element procedure. Especially, creation of mine voids due to roof falls and generation of goaf from broken rocks are simulated using active-passive-active finite elements. An active or solid element can be made passive or void once the tensile failure criterion is satisfied in the specified sinkhole formation zone. Upon completion of sinkhole development process, these passive elements in again be made active to simulate goal region. Several finite element models are analyzed to evaluate the relationships between sinkhole formation with width of gallery. depth of mine, roof condition and bulking factor of roof rocks. This study demonstrates that the concept of passive elements in numerical analysis can be used effectively for analyzing sinkhole formation or roof fall phenomenon in general.

  • In order to support mobility for sink groups, it is important to get the current location of a mobile sink group and then to offer the location to a source. Typically, previous works calculate a region including all member sinks by flooding; then, it notifies this region information to a source. However, flooding and location updates are periodically performed regardless of the group movement so that it causes considerable control overhead. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient scheme supporting mobile sink groups. The proposed scheme obtains a location of a group without flooding. It exploits the inherent property of mobile sink groups which could approximate entire group movement by only partial member sinks movement. Also, the scheme learns group location by back-propagation learning method through exploiting overhearing feature in wireless communication environment. Our simulation studies show that the proposed scheme significantly improves in terms of energy consumption compared to the previous work.
