This experimental study investigated the effect of tip clearance and bypass flow on the cooling performance of a straight fin heat sink. Both the horizontal and vertical directions of the bypass flow were studied by using a mass flow controller and test sections. The thermal resistance of a heat sink was obtained to elucidate the response of the cooling performance to tip clearance and bypass flow. The thermal resistance of a straight fin heat sink gradually increases with increasing tip clearance. A flow guide unit was employed to reduce the bypass flow. An optimal distance from the leading edge of the heat sink to the flow guide unit was found for the fixed volume flow rate. The contribution of the flow guide unit to the thermal performance of a heat sink increases with increasing volume flow rate.
Sinkholes happen in increasingly higher frequency in downtown areas with a concentration of social infrastructure these days. Most sinkholes occur around the living areas of citizens, which calls for a systematic countermeasure plan for urban development and underground water management, which are parts of the main causes of sinkholes. This study thus set out to analyze the risk factors of sinkholes in the subject area by using geospatial information deeply connected to sinkholes both directly and indirectly. The geospatial information used in analysis was obtained by examining the causes of sinkholes from a topographical perspective. Collected data were treated and analyzed with a range of spatial analysis tools based on GIS. The findings show that topographical factors had significant relations with sinkhole causes and raise a need to manage all kinds of pipe networks underground, the movement characteristics of underground water levels, and other topographical features. The findings may serve as data to support decision-making processes in the field of urban disaster prevention and call for extensive research to incorporate hydro-geomorphology and spatial modeling.

The enhancement for cooling performance of heat sink is surely necessary to guarantee the performance of electronic products. So in this paper, the cooling performances of the aluminum heat sink with pulsating heat pipe(PHP) were investigated experimentally and numerically. The pulsating heat pipe was used as a heat spreader. Working fluid of PHP was R-22. Heat inputs were 30W, 60W, 80W and 100W, respectively. Heat sink was tested for forced convection conditions with air velocity of 1 ~ 4m/s. And CFD simulations were conducted for two different heat sinks. The results showed that the cooling performance of heat sink with pulsating heat pipe was higher than that of conventional heat sink. Therefore, the pulsating heat pipe can be a good tool to improve cooling performance of heat sink.

In this experiment, we investigated the performance of two types of heat sink, swaged- and extruded-type, used in the inverter of industrial electricity generator. The swaged-type heat sink has 62 fins, and the extruded-type has 38 fins having the same dimension as that of the swaged-type. But the extruded-type heat sink maintains the same heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface which has 1 mm in radius. As a result, the swaged- and extruded-type heat sinks released 70.7% and 63.8% of the heat incoming to the heat sink, respectively. The other incoming heat were naturally convected and radiated to the ambient. In spite of 40% decrease in number of fins, the heat release performance of the extruded-type heat sink was lowered only 6.9% than that of the swaged-type. We believe that, this shows the increment of effective heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface of fins and the better heat transfer property of the extruded-type heat sink.

A continuous object is large phenomenon diffusing continuously. Therefore, a large number of sources is a major problem in researches for continuous object. Existing studies for continuous object detecting focus on reducing communication cost generated by the sources. But, they only deal with the static sink located in fixed position. In this paper, we propose the location update scheme for mobile sinks in continuous object detecting. Generally, to receive data, a mobile sink should notice its current location to sources. Previous studies for location update of mobile sinks consider individual object. So they need a lot of energy for location update when a mobile sink notices its current location toward many sources of a continuous object independently. Proposed scheme exploits regional locality of the sources involved one continuous object. The regional locality makes the location update of mobile sinks efficient. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme superior to existing schemes in terms of energy efficiency.
Data dissemination schemes for wireless sensor networks, where sinks and event targets might be mobile, has been one of the active research fields. For doing that, stationary nodes gathered data on behalf of mobile sinks and the relayed data in previous studies. their schemes, however, lead to frequent query flooding and report congestion problems over sink moving. We propose a data dissemination protocol to solve both the query flooding and the report congestion problem. Our scheme improves the two shortcomings through sink location management. Finally, we prove effectiveness of our protocol through computer simulations.

In this study, to maximize the heat release from the heat generating environment, such as a high-capacity inverter, the heat release performance of the extruded-type heat sinks with the variation of the base thickness were investigated using the experimental and numerical methods. The base thickness was varied from 5 to 14 mm. The heat release was characterized by the amount of heat released through the heat sink, the surface temperature of heat sink base between the heat sources, and temperature of heat sources. The surface temperatures between heat sources and the amounts of heat release were improved more as the base thickness was decreased. In contrast, the temperatures of the heat sources decreased with increasing base thickness. Based on the case study of these heat sinks, it is believed that a heat sink with a 9.5mm-thick base was optimized for the heat release.

In geographic routing for wireless sensor networks, sources need the location of sinks destined for delivering their data packets. Most of the existing geographic routing protocols merely assume that the sources can get the locations of sinks by some location service. How source nodes find out the location of sinks is not easy. In this paper, we propose a sink location dissemination scheme in geographic routing for wireless sensor networks. In this scheme, a source node and a sink node send sink location announcement and query messages along two paths respectively by geographic routing. The node located on the crossing point of the two paths informs the source about the sink location. Then the source can send data packet to the sink by geographic routing. How to guarantee that these two paths have at least one crossing point in any irregular profile of sensor network is the challenge of this paper Simulation results show that our protocol is significantly superior to other protocols in terms of energy consumption and control overhead.

In this paper, we propose a SInk-initiated geographic Multicast (SIM) protocol to reduce frequent location updates from mobile sinks to a source and to achieve fast multicast tree construction and data delivery. The proposed protocol allows sinks to construct their own data delivery paths to a source node and a multicast tree to be atomically constructed by merging the paths. Then, the source forwards data to the destinations down the multicast tree. This paper also propose a round-based virtual infrastructure with a radial shape for increasing the merging probability of data delivery paths and reducing reconstruction ratio of the multicast tree due to mobility of sinks. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol is superior to previous SOurce-initiated geographic Multicast (SOM) protocols in term of average data delivery delay and average energy consumption.

The semiconductor chips or electronic components generate heat, which causes malfunction of the parts when it was not cooled properly. Bulky heat sink and cooling fan are used to get rid of the heat. However, with this bulky system, it is hard to integrate the electronics system in a small scale. The cooling efficiency of the system depends on the surface area of the heat sink, thermal conductivity of the material and the method of integration. In order to develop a novel cooling system, a micro-heatsink with a large surface area while retaining small volume was fabricated by electroless deposition of gold/copper inside a Track-etched membrane. The structure of the micro-heatsink was investigated using SEM or optical microscope. It was also found that the micro-heatsink is more efficient than a flat copper plate.
