  • In this study, we analyzed and discussed the instruction method of multiplication tables in mathematics textbooks from four countries in Asia; South Korea, China, Japan, and Singapore. The conclusions of remarks are states as follows: First. The teaching period and elements should be subdivided more structurally so that the learner could understand the concept and principle of multiplication tables better. Second. The bundle model, the linear model, and the array model of multiplication need to be presented so that the learners could experience various situations related to multiplication. Third, The concrete explanation and the higher frequency of presenting the commutative rules of multiplication is suggested so that the learner could understand the concept of the rules well. Fourth. The context related to multiplication by 1 and 0 should be presented so that the learner could comprehend the character of multiplication by 1 and 0. Fifth. The activities which helping memorizing a multiplication table should be suggested when the memorization is needed.

  • In this study, we analyzed the contents of speed concept presented in Korean, Japanese, Singapore, and American elementary mathematics textbooks, and drew implications for the teaching of speed concept in elementary schools. We developed a textbook analysis framework by theoretical discussions on the characteristics of the speed concept based on the proportional relationship and the previous researches on the speed in elementary mathematics. We analyzed the textbooks of four countries and drew some suggestions for improving the teaching of speed concept in Korean elementary schools.

  • The fraction concept consists of various meanings and is one of the abstract and difficult in elementary school mathematics. This study intends to find out the implication for introducing the fraction concept by comparing mathematics textbooks of Korea and Singapore. Both countries' students peformed well in recent TIMMSs. Some implications are as follows; The term 'equal' is not defined and the results of various 'equal partitioning' activities can not easily examined in Korea's mathematics textbook. And contexts of introducing fractions as a quotient and a ratio are unnatural in Korea's mathematics textbook in comparison with Singapore's mathematics textbook. So these ideas should be reconsidered in order to seek the direction for improvement of it. And Korea's textbooks need the emphasis on the fraction as a measure and on constructing fraction concept by unit fraction.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore alternative ways of teaching derivatives in a way that emphasizes intuition. For this purpose, the contents related to derivatives in Korean curriculum and textbooks were analyzed by comparing with contents in Singapore Curriculum and textbooks. Singapore, where the curriculum deals with derivatives relatively earlier than Korea, introduces the concept of derivatives and differentiation as the slope of tangent instead of the rate of instantaneous change in textbook. Also, Singapore use technology and inductive extrapolation to emphasize intuition rather than form and logic. Further, from the results of the exploration of other foreign cases, we confirm that the UK and Australia also emphasized intuition in teaching derivatives and differentiation. Based on the results, we discuss the meaning and implication of introducing derivatives and teaching differentiation in a way that emphasizes intuition. Finally, we propose the implications for the alternative way of teaching differentiation.

  • Ratio and rate are key topics in the area of 'Patterns', but there are various perspectives on them. This study compared and analyzed the perspectives of Korean and Singaporean mathematics textbooks on ratio and rate, and explored how teaching and learning methods develop according to each perspective in terms of quantitative reasoning. To this end, we reorganized the analysis criteria based on some studies, and analyzed the textbooks of the two countries in relation to context, relationship, and representation. The results of the study are as follows. Regarding the context, there were differences in the situations, types of units and use of units of the problems presented in textbooks. In terms of relationship, there were differences in the types of two quantities and relationship of quantities. Lastly, there were differences in the representation of ratio and rate. Through these results, we found that elementary mathematics textbooks in Korea and Singapore take different perspectives on ratio and rate. In particular, the perspective taken by Korean textbooks on ratio and rate had unique points different from that of other previous studies. Considering this Korean perspective, we suggested some implications that could help improve textbooks related to ratio and rate and teach them meaningfully.

  • The algorithm of natural number multiplication is one of the basic topics of elementary school mathematics. Mastery of algorithm and understanding of the principles are important educational aims. In this paper we analyzed elementary school mathematics textbooks of South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Japan. As a result of analysis, we found out that there are much differences in the teaching of multiplication with three numbers, '${\times}10$', and '${\times}tens$'. We suggested some implication for the teaching of algorithm of natural number multiplication.

  • PISA 2012 showed that while Korean students achieved high-level math achievement in mathematics their levels are relatively lower in math self-efficacy. Students from Singapore, on the other hand, achieved high scores both in math achievement and in math self-efficacy. The results of the two countries differed although both countries has been sharing the same East Asian cultural sphere. This study analyzed the input and the process variables on the student- and school-level concerning math self-efficacy. The results were as follows. In Korea, math interest, instrumental motivation, elaboration strategies, applied and pure math tasks were the student-level variables that affected math self-efficacy. In Singapore, math interest, control strategies, elaboration strategies, applied and pure math tasks were the student-level variables that affected mathematics self-efficacy. Math club, teachers' low expectations were the school-level variables that affected math self-efficacy. For a higher-level of math self-efficacy in Korea, it is important to encourage students not only to use control strategies, but to participate in math clubs. It is equally important for teachers to have higher expectations towards students.

  • As compared with the gender differences in the achievement of mathematics of the PISA 2009, the results of this study on the PISA 2012 show that the achievement of male students sharply increased, while that of female students maintained the status quo. Based on the premise that this result is derived from the ratio differences between male and female students of high level, this study analyzed the educational context variable effects on the achievements of gender differences observed between male and female students of high level. In particular, this study inquired into the factors which influence the gender difference, by analyzing the identical variables regarding Singapore and Finland of which the achievement of female students registers high among other top high-ranking countries of the PISA 2012. Hence, the binominal logistic multi-level analysis was conducted in order to consider the characteristics of hierarchical structure of PISA, and to compare the features of the educational context variable effects between the high level (above level 5) by country and the highest level (above level 6) by group. The analysis results are as follows: in terms of after-school learning time realized either in private lessons and private institutes, no significant effects were shown in any of the students of these three countries. In terms of after-school homework time, the students of Korea and Singapore gave significant influences on the probability which would be included in the group of high level or the highest level. In particular, regarding the variables which influence the probability of inclusion of Korean female students in the group of high level or the highest level, they correspond to "Homework set by teacher", "Attitude toward school: learning activities", "ESCS of School" and "Teacher-student relations". And "Cultural possessions at home" gave main influences on the probability of inclusion of the female students of Korea, Singapore and Finland in the group of the highest level.

  • In this study, we investigated how multiplication by 2-digit numbers had been taught in elementary mathematics textbooks of Korea, Japan, Singapore, and USA. As a result of analysis, we found as follows. Korean textbooks do not teach the multiplication by 10 and the multiplication by power of 10, but Japanese, Singapore, and US textbooks explicitly teach related content. In the '×tens' teaching, Japanese and American textbooks teach formally the law of association of multiplication applied in the process of calculating the partial product of multiplication. The standard multiplication algorithm generally followed a standard method of recording partial product result according to the law of distribution, but the differences were confirmed in the multiplication model, the teaching method of the law of distribution, and the notation of the last digit '0'. Based upon these results, we suggested some proposals for improving the multiplication teaching.
