A study on the relationship between user's preference and aesthetic elements, and the importance of aesthetic elements in product design - With relevance to Electrical Home Appliances - (제품디자인에 있어 사용자 선호와 심미적 영향요소의 상호관계와 디자인 고려 요소에 관한 연구 - 가전제품을 중심으로 -)

  • In the highly developing industrial society, design has been playing the central role in the managerial strategy of a company and has been one of the central agendas in determining the economical competence of a country, and has also been regarded as a means to acquire sustainable superior competence. Thus, these trends suggest that the aesthetic value of a product has become more important than its technological function. In this study we reviewed theoretically esthetic factors influencing the preference and the evaluation of a product and made a list of eight esthetic factors based on various referential studies which include simplicity, balance, unity, rhythm, style, novelty, typicality, and proportion. We investigated the esthetic factors affecting consumers preferences and the basis for evaluating a product. Conclusively, this study aimed at providing materials for developing product design by presenting an esthetic guideline and to put these materials to practical use. The study also investigated other considered elements classified by manufactures and the importance of esthetic factors and its influence on consumer tastes.

In this study we review theoretically esthetic factors influencing the preference of a product, so that we can make a list of eight esthetic factors based on the various referential studies. They are simplicity, balance, unity, rhythm, style, novelty, typicality, and proportion. We research esthetic factors affecting consumers' preferences and evaluation of a product and typical esthetic factors specific to the characteristics of each product. Therefore, in this study we tried to provide available materials in developing product design by present of esthetic guideline and to put this materials to practical use in product design by finding considered elements and importance of esthetic factors which had important effects on the tastes of the consumers classified by manufactures.

Consumer's Aesthetic Response to Direct, Mediating and Interactive Effects of Typicality and Form Aesthetics in Product Design (제품디자인에 있어 전형성과 심미성 요소(균형)의 상호작용과 조절변수에 의한 사용자의 심미적 반응에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, design has emerged as a key factor of successful product development. This study reviewed the elements of form with a view point of addressing and defining the elements of aesthetics and how they influence consumer aesthetic response. Though past researches related to form aesthetics reported that form aesthetics exist as a single element with other sub-elements, this research made further investigations into form aesthetics and reported that form aesthetics in product design can be broadly divided into form aesthetics and content aesthetics. Empirical studies on each category was undertaken and from the results obtained, it was concluded that typicality is a dominant element in content aesthetics while balance is a dominant element in form aesthetics. Also, the study investigated the effect of conditional variables such as price and people on each category and it was observed that both content and form aesthetics elements are affected by conditional variables such as price, people. Furthermore, the study reports that both content and form aesthetics elements are mutually correlated and both categories affect user's aesthetics response. It is intended that the results obtained from this work will contribute to theoretical knowledge of aesthetic elements and can be put to use by product design and manufacturing companies.

  • 대부분의 디자인관련 종사자들은 심미성이 소비자의 선호에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 주장에 동의하고 있다. 하지만 어떠한 심미적 요소가 소비자 선호도에 얼마큼 영향을 미치는지에 대한 연구가 미미한 편이다. 따라서 본 연구는 심미적 영향 요소인 율동에 관한 사례연구를 통하여 구체적 영향 정도를 파악하고 연구결과를 이용 소비자 선호도를 높일 수 있는 방안 제시를 시도할 것이다.

  • 2000 년 이후부터는 HCI 분야에서도 감성적 측면의 연구 중에서 특히 미학(Aesthetics)과 아름다움 (Beauty)에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어져 왔다. 기존 HCI 분야가 유용성, 사용성과 같은 인지적 측면의 경험 요소들을 추구하기 위해 집중했다면, 최근에는 심미성이나 즐거움 등과 같은 감성적인 측면의 경험 요소도 함께 중시하는 추세이다. 심지어 실용적인 측면을 강조했던 핸드폰이나 냉장고 등의 전자제품에서도 디자인의 심미성과 같은 감성적인 측면이 더욱 부각되고 있다. 현재까지 HCI 분야에서 심미성에 대한 연구가 다수 진행되어왔다. 그 중에서 Tractinsky (2000)는 지각된 심미성과 지각된 사용성이 양의 상관관계를 가짐을 보여주었다. HCI 분야에서 Tranctinsky 와 더불어 Hassenzahl (2004, 2008) 역시 심미성과 다른 사용자 경험 요소들의 상관관계를 밝히기 위해 여러 시도를 해오고 있다. 그러나 상위 연구들은 주로 심미성과 다른 사용자 경험 요소들과의 상관관계에만 초점을 맞추었고, 모두 실험 상황에서만 연구가 진행되었다는 한계점을 가지고 있다. 즉, 실험 상황에서 도출된 결과는 실제로 사용자가 구매 시점이나 사용 상황에서 심미성을 얼마나 중요하게 고려하는지, 심미성 다른 사용자 경험 요소에 어떤 영향을 미치는지, 그 영향력이 사용 경험에 따라 변화가 없는지 사용 정황이 반영된 시사점을 찾기 어려운 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 크게 두 가지 목적을 가지고 있다. 첫째, 지각된 심미성이 다른 사용자 경험 요소들에 미치는 영향력을 검증하고, 둘째, 지각된 심미성이 다른 사용자 경험 요소에 미치는 영향력을 사용 경험 기간의 조절효과 관점에서 연구하는 것이다. 우선 본 연구에서는 사용자 경험 요소를 다차원적인 관점에서 접근하여, 여러 사용자 경험 요소들을 실용적 차원과 유희적 차원으로 나누었다. 그리고 사용 경험 기간의 조절효과를 보기 위해, 장기간 사용하는 전자제품을 선정하고 이를 실제로 사용하는 사용자를 대상으로 대규모 온라인 설문을 실시하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 Tractinsky(2000)의 기존 연구를 사용 기간의 조절효과 관점에서 진행한 것에 의의를 가질 뿐만 아니라, 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 제품 개발이나 디자인 종사자들에게 HCI 관점의 시사점을 제공하고자 한다.

  • This research aimed at a clear definition of simplicity and complexity and other elements of product aesthetics and investigated the influence of simplicity/complexity on consumer preference, and balance. The research also made it an objective to find answers to underlying questions of whether there is a relationship between simplicity/complexity, and balance, and if there is, then how is the relationship? and is balance in a product's aesthetics an influential factor? does a relationship exist between consumer preference, simplicity/complexity, and balance? In conclusion, the research process categorized products into groups by use of FCB Grid, and analyze4 each group to establish a prototype which represents the group, then questionnaires where presented to consumers in order to find satisfaction to consumer preference. Also, the research proposes a verification method through design process.

  • Even though rhythm is considered theoretically and practically as a form element influencing consumer's aesthetic response on product design, researches on it relatively less performed than other product aesthetic elements. And also existing researches have only suggested rhythm as one of aesthetic elements in product design but they haven't suggested overall insight on how to apply rhythm into product design. This study tested how rhythm expression in product design affects consumer's aesthetic response according to price level and brand hierarchy. The result shows that rhythm is clearly one of aesthetic elements. And rhythm expression increase consumer's aesthetic response in low priced product condition regardless of brand hierarchy. But in high priced product condition, rhythm expression decreases consumer's aesthetic response because of perceived risk. Only when in high prestige brand condition, consumer's aesthetic response remains high because of trade-off relationship between perceived risk and brand equity. The result of this study enables designers to understand characteristics of rhythm. Also, the result can give companies the useful way on how to use rhythm element as a strategic tool if they consider their brand equity level and product's price level.

  • Aesthetics undertakes important roll in design as a competitive factor. The importance of aesthetics can be found in experimental aesthetics, Gestalt psychology and design related literatures. These literatures suggest that, besides the importance of aesthetics, many other aesthetic factors would affect consumer reaction(recognition, emotional reaction, meaning), but the study is still in insufficient condition. Hense, this study tries to give a guideline -'how to design symbols'based on the apprehension of what kind of design is well recognized(correct recognition), gives positive emotional reaction(affect) to customers, and moreover, what sort of aesthetic factors affect these reactions by analyzing existing symbol designs.
