  • Information supporting system which is based on real-time prediction of currents to be applicable to the sea trial test of ship is developed. In the system, the spatial distribution of currents at specific time and the trends of variability of currents occurring at specific sites are also given as valuable information for sea trial test of ship. In addition, the system has a capability to connect with a GPS which provides information including speed loss of the ship caused by currents on the way of voyage. With information from the sea trial test, the system is also capable of delivering optimum time and pathways by considering calculated speed loss of ship at specific time and its pathway. Having information described as above, the real-time current prediction system supports and provides functions of not only running the test in an efficient way but also providing valuable information which is encouraged to be used during the test by installing at the ship.

  • In oder to develop a decision supporting system for oil spill response, the prototype of pollution response support system which has integrated oil spill prediction system and pollution risk prediction system has developed for Incheon-Daesan area. Spill prediction system calculates oil spill aspects based on real-time wind data and real-time water flow and the residual volume of spilt oil and spread pattern are calculated considering the characteristic of spilt oil. In this study, real-time data is created from results of real-time meteorological forecasting model(National Institute of Environmental Research) using ftp, real-time tidal currents datasets are built using CHARRY(Current by Harmonic Response to the Reference Yardstick) model and real-time wind-driven currents are calculated applying the correlation function between wind and wind-driven currents. In order to model the feature which is spilt oil spreading according to real-time water flow is weathered, the decrease ratio by oil kinds was used. These real-time data and real-time prediction information have been integrated with ESI(Environmental Sensitivity Index) and response resources and then these are provided using GIS as a whole system to make the response strategy.

  • To understand the spatial-temporal distribution of seawater in Korea's South Sea, seawater movement and the distribution of water temperature has been analyzed using a hydrodynamic model (the Princeton Ocean Model). The directions of tidal currents were generally westward during flood tides and eastward during ebb tides. Northeastward Tsushima Warm Currents in the open sea, which is deeper than 50m were stronger than in coastal areas. Analysis of data from the hydrodynamic model showed that the water temperature in the semi-closed bay was relatively higher ($26{\sim}28^{\circ}C$) than in the open sea ($18{\sim}22^{\circ}C$). The exchange volume of semi-closed seawater was $10,331m^3/sec$ in Gwangyang Bay, $16,935m^3/sec$ in Yeosu-Gamag Bay and $13,454m^3/sec$ in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Therefore, it was shown that the lower seawater exchange volume is, the higher seawater temperature will be.

  • This study constructed a 3D real-time numerical model that predicts the water quality and movement characteristics of the inner bay, considering the characteristics of the wind-driven current and density current in estuaries, generated by the river discharge from the Hyeong-san river and oceanic water of the Eastern sea. The numerical model successfully calculated the seawater circulation current of Yeong-il Bay, using the input conditions oj the real-time tidal current, river discharge, and weather conditions during March 2001. This study also observed the wind-driven current and density current in estuaries that are effected by the seawater circulation pattern of the inner bay. We investigated and analyzed each impact factor, and its relationship to the water quality of Yeong-il bay.

  • We installed HF Radar of Array type in Site A and Site B, observing the real-time wave and current in the central East coast of Korea. WERA(WavE RAdar) in this research uses HF Radar of Array Type with frequency range of 24.525 MHz, developed by Helzel, Germany. Each site is a 8-Channel system consisting of four transmitters and eight receivers, generating wave and current data, being observed every thirty minutes at the present time. HF Radar has grid resolution of an interval of 1.5 km using bandwidth of 150 kHz; The wave data covers an observation range of about 25 km, and the current data covers the maximum observation range of about 50 km. The Wave data observed by HF Radar was compared and verified with the AWAC data observed in the research sites. MIT also compared the Current data observed by HF Radar with Monthly the East sea average surface current and current flow pattern provided by KOHA(Korea Hydrographic and oceanographic Administration). The regression line and deviation of the comparison data of Wave was calculated by Principal Component Analysis, which showed correlation coefficient 0.86 and RMSD 0.186. Besides, data analysis of long-term changes of the current in the East coast showed that, during August and September, the North Korean Cold Current flow into the southward direction and the East Korean Warm Current flow into the northward direction in the coast.

  • The Inner Port Phase 2 area of the Pyeongtaek-Dangjin Port is enclosed by a total of three permeable sea-walls, and the disposal site to the east of the Inner Port Phase 2 is also enclosed by two permeable sea-walls. The maximum tidal range measured in the Inner Port Phase 2 and in the disposal site in May 2010 is 4.70 and 2.32 m, respectively. It reaches up to 54 and 27%, respectively of 8.74 m measured simultaneously in the exterior. Regression formulas between the difference of hydraulic head and the rate of interior water volume change, are induced. A three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model for the Asan Bay is constructed incorporating a module to compute water discharge through the permeable sea-walls at each computation time step by employing the formulas. Hydrodynamics for the period from 13th to 27th May, 2010 is simulated by driving forces of real-time reconstructed tide with major five constituents($M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, $O_1$ and $N_2$) and freshwater discharges from Asan, Sapkyo, Namyang and Seokmoon Sea dikes. The skill scores of modeled mean high waters, mean sea levels and mean low waters are excellent to be 96 to 100% in the interior of permeable sea-walls. Compared with the results of simulation to obstruct the flow through the permeable sea-walls, the maximum current speed increases by 0.05 to 0.10 m/s along the main channel and by 0.1 to 0.2 m/s locally in the exterior of the Outer Sea-wall of Inner Port. The maximum bottom shear stress is also intensified by 0.1 to 0.4 $N/m^2$ in the main channel and by more than 0.4 $N/m^2$ locally around the arched Outer Sea-wall. The module developed to compute the flow through impermeable seawalls can be practically applied to simulate and predict the advection and dispersion of materials, the erosion or deposion of sediments, and the local scouring around coastal structures where large-scale permeable sea-walls are maintained.

  • Tracking model of a drifted ship lot the search and rescue mission in southern sea of Korea is studied. In this model, search area is determined by considering standard deviation of position around reference point. The reference point is estimated for a given type of ship when marine environmental conditions such as wind and current are given. A database for environmental data, which is necessary for the real-lime tracking of drilled ship, is gel)elated on southern sea and western sea of Korea. Using this database, the real-time prediction of wind and current is possible. The simulated trajectories and search area of our model ate validated by comparing with reported real data.
