  • For well-constructed concrete, its service life is a long term and it has an enough durability performance. However, for cracked concrete, it is clear that cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substance such as chloride ions according to author's previous researches. In order to enhance the lifetime of cracked concrete, critical issues in the performance of the concrete is the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. Even though crack width can be reduced due to the high reinforcement ratio, the question is to which extend these cracks may jeopardize the durability of cracked concrete. If the size of crack is small, surface treatment system can be considered as one of the best options to extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to marine environment simply in terms of cost effectiveness versus durability performance. Thus, it should be decided to undertake an experimental study on the effect of different types of surface treatment system, which are expected to seal the concrete and the cracks to chloride-induced corrosion in particular. In this study, it is examined the effect of surfaced treated systems on chloride penetration through microcracks. Single surface treatments of penetrant or coating and double application were considered as an experimental variation. RCM (Rapid Chloride Migration) testing is accomplished to visualize chloride penetration via cracks.

  • We designed new compositions for lead free and low temperature sealing glass frit of $ZnO-V_2O_5-P_2O_5$ system, which can be used for PDP (Plasma Display Panel) or other electronic devices. The $ZnO-V_2O_5-P_2O_5$ system can be used as a sealing material at temperatures even lower than 430$^{\circ}C$. This system, however, showed lower bonding strength with glass substrate compared to commercialized Pb based sealing materials. So, we added $TiO_2$ as a promoter for bonding strength. We examined the effect of $TiO_2$ addition on sealing behaviors of $ZnO-V_2O_5-P_2O_5$ glasses with the data for flow button, wetting angle, temporary & permanent residual stress of glass substrate, EPMA analysis of interface between sealing materials and glass substrate, and bonding strength. As a result, sealing characteristics of $ZnO-V_2O_5-P_2O_5$ system glasses were improved with $TiO_2$ addition, but showed a maximum value at 5 mol% $TiO_2$ addition. The reason for improved bonding characteristics was considered to be the chemical interaction between glass substrate and sealing glass, and structural densification of sealing glass itself.

  • A valve product can be over-designed or too heavy. Finite element analysis was performed using ANSYS for two and three-dimensional ball valve models, and the ball weight was reduced by optimization within the allowable design criteria. The ball is structurally safe according to the computed stress values, which are within the material's admissible stress. The weight was reduced by about 22%, and the structural safety factor was 1.25. The structural safety of the seat insert and ring, which are used to prevent leakage, was confirmed through finite element analysis. It is shown that the two-dimensional analysis can result in similar values to the three-dimensional analysis for the axisymmetric structure. The redesign of the valve is not included in the results since such changes require a whole new design process, including all valve components.

  • In this study, the effect of vanadium oxide ($V_2O_5$) content and pre-sintering atmosphere on sealing property of glass frit that consisted of $V_2O_5-BaO-ZnO-P_2O_5-TeO_2-CuO-Fe_2O_3-SeO_2$ was investigated by XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). The content of V2O5 was changed to 15, 30, and 45 mol%, and the pre-sintering was carried out in air and $N_2$ condition, respectively. XPS analysis conducted before and after laser irradiation with identical sample. Before laser treatment, glass frits that were pre-sintered at air condition showed both $V^{4+}$ and $V^{5+}$, but the valence state was changed to $V^{5+}$ after laser irradiation when the glass frits contained 30 and 45 mol% $V_2O_5$; this change led to non-adhesive property. On the other hand, glass frits that were pre-sintered at $N_2$ condition exhibited only $V^{4+}$ and it showed fine adhesion irrespective of the $V_2O_5$ content. As a result, the existence of $V^{4+}$ seems to be a major factor for controlling the adhesive property of glass frit for laser sealing.
