  • Modified mordenites by HF treatement, which have different $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio, and those mixed with $\gamma$-alumina are prepared and used for catalytic cracking of triphenylmethane(TPM) in micro-activity tester(MAT). Dealumination of mordenites decreased the acid content but developed secondary mesopores. The conversion and the selectivity of benzene over modified mordenites with the mesopores were increased. However, for the further dealuminated mordenites, they decreased due to the destruction of pore structure and low acid amount. Accordingly, the maximum cracking activity and the maximum selectivity of benzene were obtained about 17 $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio of modified mordenites. The modified mordenites mixed with alumina enhanced the cracking activity of TPM compared with the pure mordenites. It can be explained that TPM is cracked at active sites with in large pores of alumina firstly and further cracked into small molecules in zeolite pores as step mechanism of catalytic cracking.

  • The effects of resin additives and inorganic compounds addition on the thermal decomposition of low density polyethylene(LDPE) resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer(TGA, DSC) and a small batch reactor. The silica-alumina type compounds tested were kaolinite, bentonite, perlite, diatomaceous earth, activated clay and clay. The resin additives were antiforgging-agent and longevity-agent. As the results of TGA experiments, addition of antifogging-agent, longevity-agent and clay increased the temperature of the maximum reaction rate($T_{max}$). The silica-alumina type inorganic materials increased the pyrolysis reraction rate in the order of activated clay, diatomaceous earth, bentonite, perlites, and kaolinite. In the DSC experiments, addition of antifogging-agent and clay decreased the heat of fusion and the heat of pyrolysis reaction. Bentonite decreased 20% of the heat of fusion and 25% of the heat of pyrolysis reaction. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of clay retarded the initial producing rate of fuel oil, but increased the yield of fuel oil. Addition of bentonite increased the yield of fuel oil from LDPE resin. Mixing of antifogging-agent and longevity-agent produced the fuel oil having lower carbon number. The amounts of the carbon number below 12 in fuel oil decreased with adding the clay. That below 23 in fuel oil increased with mixing of bentonite, perlite, kaolinite, and activated clay. But the mixing of diatomaceous earth did not affect the carbon contents of fuel oil from pure LDPE resin. In the silica-alumina type inorganic material used in this experiments, bentonite was the most effective from the pyrolysis heat, yields, and the characteristics of fuel oil.

  • The effects of silica-alumina type catalysts addition on the thermal decomposition of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer (TGA, DSC) and a small batch reactor. The silica-alumina type compounds tested were kaolinite, bentonite, perlite, activated clay and clay. As the results of TGA experiments, pyrolysis starting temperature for EVA resin had the 1st pyrolysis temperature range of 300~$400^{\circ}C$ and the 2nd pyrolysis temperature range of 425~$525^{\circ}C$. The silica-alumina type catalysts did not affect the pyrolysis rate in EVA pyrolysis reaction. In the DSC experiments, addition of kaolinite and bentonite catalysts reduced the heat of fusion and heat of 2nd pyrolysis reaction. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of silica-alumina type catalysts enhanced the yield of fuel oil, and affected to the distribution of carbon numbers. In the silica-alumina type inorganic material used in this experiments, bentonite was the most effective from the pyrolysis heat, yields, and the characteristics of fuel oil.

  • In this study. we have intended to control the properties of surface reaction zone generated between pure titanium and oxide investment moulds. Commercially pure titanium was centrifugally casted and silica$.$alumina based phosphate bonded investment was used as the mould material. The effect of cooling methods after casting on the surface reaction zone and mechanical properties of casts were investigated. The resulting casts showed the multilayered surface reaction zone regardless of cooling method. Especially. water cooling method produced the titanium casts with thinner surface reaction zone. weaker strength. and higher elongation properties compared to air cooling. It can thus be known that the resulting casts had satisfactory mechanical properties as dental materials. From these results, the cooling rate dependence of interfacial and mechanical properties can be attributed to the diffusion of oxygen from casting environment, which control the reaction of titanium and mould.

  • The Deogbong napseok clay deposit which is composed mainly of dickite and pyrophyllite has been formed by hydrothermal alteration of the Late Cretaceous volcanic rocks consisting of andesitic tuff and andesite. The mineralogy of the napseok ores and the hydrothermal alteration processes have been studied in order to know the nature of the interaction between minerals and fluids for the formation of the deposit. Chemical distribution shows that alkali elements and silica were mobile but alumina was relatively immobile during the hydrothermal processes. It is evident that enrichment of alumina and leaching of silica from the host rock led to the formation of the napseok ore, whereas the enrichment of silica in the outer zone of the deposit gave rise to the silica zone. A large amount of microcrystalline quartz closely associated with dickite and pyrophyllite suggests the increasing activity of silica. Thus Si which was released away from the argillic zone by the increasing activity of silica. Thus Si which was released away from the argillic zone by the increasing activity of silica solubility moved out precipitating in the margin of the deposit to form the silica zone. Variation in dickite crystallinity implies the local change in the stability of the system. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the invariant point of pyrophyllite-dickite (kaolinite)-diaspore-quartz assemblages at 500 bars in the system $Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}-H_{2}O$ is about 300 $^{\circ}C$. Based on the mineral assemblages and the experimental data reported, it is estimated that the main episode of hydrothermal alteration occurred at least above 270 to 300 $^{\circ}C$ and $X_{CO_2}$ <0.025. Mineral occurrence and chemical variation indicate that the activity of Al is high in the upper part of the deposit, whereas the activity of Si is high in the lower part and the margin of the deposit. The nonequilibrium phase relations observed in the Deogbong deposit might be due to local change in intensive thermodynamic variables and fluid transport properties that resulted in the formation of nonequilibrium phases b of several stages.

  • In this research, composite alumina was prepared to add the various promoters by sol-gel method and examined its thermal stability. After sintering at $1,200^{\circ}C$, the thermal stability resulted in following order, $Si{\fallingdotseq}La$ > Ti > $Ba{\fallingdotseq}Ce$ > Y > $Zr{\fallingdotseq}Mg$, in accordance with adding the promoters. Especially in case of silica-added alumina, a phase transformation temperature to ${\alpha}$-alumina increased about $150^{\circ}C$ and after sintering at $1,200^{\circ}C$, it showed to maintain in ${\gamma}$-form and ${\delta}$-form alumina phase. Also it showed an increase of surface area from $3m^2/g$ to $71m^2/g$ compared with pure ${\alpha}$-alumina. In the case of silicaadded alumina, the characterization change of this alumina particle resulted in a delay of phase transformation because Si-O-Al bond was increased when sintered at high temperature. In case of lanthanum-added alumina, there was a sintering delay phenomenon in inter-particles as $LaAlO_3$ structure existed. The existence of lanthanum structure was confirmed by XRD and XPS analysis. It appeared on the alumina surface as $La_2O_3$ structure when it was sintered under $1,000^{\circ}C$, as the perovskite structure of $LaAlO_3$ at above $1,000^{\circ}C$ and as the magneto-plumbite structure of $LaAl_{11}O_{18}$ at above $1,300^{\circ}C$.

  • A commercially pure Ti(CP-Ti) and Ti-25wt%Pd alloy for dental applications were cast into a phosphate-bonded Al$_2$ $O_3$/ $SiO_2$ investment mold and the surface of the casting specimens were investigated by means of SEM/EDS, XRD and XPS. The addition of 25wt%Pd in CP-Ti showed a moderate mold reaction owing to the considerable lowering of melting point. XRD analysis of the investment after burn-out treatment revealed that it consisted essentially of $SiO_2$, Al$_2$ $O_3$, P$_2$O$\_$5/, Mg$_3$(P $O_4$)$_2$, AlP $O_4$, Mg$_2$ $SiO_4$, MgAl$_2$ $O_4$ The mold reaction products were Ti$\_$5/Si$_3$ and Ti $O_2$ in case of CP-Ti casting and Ti $O_2$ and SiO$\_$x/ in case of Ti-25wt% Pd casting.

  • The Kimhae napseok clay deposit was studied to characterize its mineralogy and genesis. Geology of the deposit is composed of Tertiary volcanic rocks and granodiorite. Tertiary volcanic rocks consist of andesitic tuff with minor interstratified tuffaceous shale, and rhyodacitic tuff. The main ore body of 2.4 to 4 m in thickness developed parallel to the bedding of andesitic tuff bed. Its strike and dip are $N70^{\circ}E-N85^{\circ}E$ and $16^{\circ}NW-32^{\circ}NW$, respectively. Two alteration zones; the propylitic zone of albite-epidote-chlorite-quartz assemblage and advanced argillic zone of pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore assemblage are developed. Correlation of $SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3$ shows no relation in propylitic zone, while a negative linear relation in advanced argillic zone. Chemical variation shows that $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO, CaO, $Na_2O$ and $K_2O$ were leached out during hydrothermal alteration. Pyrophyllite, the most abundant mineral in advanced argillic zone, occurs as low temperature 2M polytype. It is closely associated with dickite, diaspore and alunite. The Hinckley index of dickite is 0.83 showing moderate crystallinity. Na content is increasing in the M site with the increasing content of cations in the R-site. the mole percent of Na replacing K in alunite ranges from 53.2 to 71.6. It is also found that pyrophyllite grows in the dissolution site of diaspore. Plagioclase was albitized. Lowering of pH caused mainly by sulfide and sulfate decomposition resulted in preferential leaching of Si. It is inferred that aluminum released from plagioclase in the volcanic rocks as well as from the tuffaceous shale intercalated in andesitic tuff were the main sources of aluminum required for the formation of clay deposit. pH in hydrothermal fluid decreased from propylitic zone to advanced argillic zone with increasing degree of alteration. Based on experimental data reported in the literature and mineral assemblages, the formation temperature of the deposit ranges 270 to $320^{\circ}C$.

  • The Pd-Ni-Ag alloy composite membrane using modified porous stainless steel (PSS) as a substrate was prepared by a electroless plating technique. In this work, we have introduced the intermediate layer between Pd-based alloy and a metal substrate. As an intermediate layer, the mixtures of nickel powder and inorganic sol such as $SiO_{2}$ sol, $Al_{2}O_{3}$ sol, and $TiO_{2}$ sol were used. The intermediate layers were coated onto a PSS substrate according to various membrane preparation conditions and then $N_{2}$ fluxes through the membranes with different intermediate layers were measured. The surface morphology of the intermediate layer in the mixture of nickel powder and inorganic sol was analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Finally, the Pd-Ni-Ag alloy composite membrane using the support coated with the mixture of nickel powder and silica as an intermediate layer was fabricated and then the gas permeances for $H_{2}$ and $N_{2}$ through the Pd-based membrane were investigated. The selectivity of $H_2/N_2$ was infinite and the $H_{2}$ flux was $1.39{\times}10^{-2}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$ at the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and trans-membrane pressure difference of 1 bar.
