Effects of Body Condition Score and Estimation of Growth Curves for Chest Girth and Ultra Sonic Longissimus Muscle Area, Backfat Thickness and Marbling Scores in Hanwoo(Korean cattle) Cows (한우 암소의 흉위, 초음파 측정 배장근단면적, 등지방두께, 근내지방도에 대한 발육곡선 추정 및 신체충실지수 효과)

  • Growth curves for ultrasonic carcass traits such as longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness and marbling score as well as chest girth which was simultaneously measured when carcass traits were investigated using ultrasound measuring technique were estimated to identify growth patterns and to adjust maturing effects in order to evaluating genetic merits on cows in farming basis. 27,410 records from 22,451 cows on which of 15~90 month of age were investigated from the national wide of Korea using by ultrasonic scanning techniques by the skilled persons from 2002 to 2007. Van Bertalanffy growth function was applied for estimating growth curves on these traits. Carcass traits and chest girth would be linearly increased by body condition score. It might be used for multiplicative correction factors for pre- adjustment on the body condition scores. Growth pattern on chest girth would be quickly reached to mature size and stable on after reached to asymptotic mature size. Longissimus muscle area would also be reached to mature size but little smoother than chest girth. Otherwise, growth curve on backfat thickness would be steadily increasing up to 7 years of age. It also showed large individual difference by way of mean square error. Marbling score would be steadily increased but sharper than those on backfat thickness. It would be reached to mature size up at 5 years of age. Those growth curves would be used for correcting function on age at investigating on genetic evaluation system.

Estimation of genetic parameters using real-time ultrasound measurements in Hanwoo (한우 암소의 생체 초음파 성적을 이용한 유전모수 추정)

  • This study was conducted to estimate genetic effects on economically important traits for genetic improvement in Hanwoo by using the real-time ultrasound measurements for longissimus dorsi muscle area (LMA), backfat thickness (BFT), and marbling score (Marb). The phenotypic data were obtained from 1,648 pedigreed cows, and general linear models were applied to test the effects of age, region, and body condition socre. The cows between 50 and 60 months of age had the greatest scores for LMA and BFT, and Marb (P<0.05). The cows in region C had the greatest scores for body condition socre, LMA and BFT, while in region J Marb was the lowest (P<0.05). There was positive relation with LMA, BFT, and Marb according to increase body condition socre. Heritabilities for LMA, BFT, and Marb were estimated as 0.136, 0.351, and 0.236, respectively. These results would provide primary information for the efficient implementation of genetic improvement schemes in Hanwoo.

  • A study was carried out to investigate the dietary environment food intake and blood picture of rural housewives. Sixty percent of female farmer's was in weak health state. Mean farmer's syndrome score was 4, 7 which meaning that they must give attention to their health. The intake of animal food group was poor Most of nutrients taken by them were almost lower than those of Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances except vitamin C. According to the blood tests the blood levels of lipids calcium magnesium iron hemoglobin and hematocrit were in lower states. All of the farmers were lower serum level of ferritin whereas but glucose protein and albumin levels were normal. Serum magnesium was correlated with cereal intake The intake of cereal fat and oils and vegetables was correlated with physical perfect index. Hemoglobin and hematocrit level were negatively correlated with physical perfect index. Hemoglobin and hematocrit level were negatively correlated with the food group of fruits and fishes.

  • 한우번식우 사육농가와 사육규모가 확대와 소 값 상승으로 인하며 인공수정 및 수정란 이식에 대한 수태율 향상에 많은 관심이 집중되고 있다. 이러한 수태율 향상을 위하여 한우 암소에 배란동기화 처리 후 인공수정 시 황체기능 강화제인 등을 투여하여 황체기능을 강화시키고, 투여시기에 따라 개체에 대한 신체충실지수(BCS)와 혈중요소태질소화합물(BUN)을 분석하였으며, 또한 투여시기에 따른 혈중 Progesteroner의 변화를 조사하였다. 황체기능강화제의 투여 방법은 HCG 투여구는 배란동기화 처리 후 6일째와 7일째에 각각 1500 IU와 3000 IU를 투여하였고, 투여 후 14일째에 혈액을 채취하여 혈중 P4 분석하였다. The Predictive Model of Adolescent Women측s Depression (사춘기 여성의 우울 예측모형)

  • This study was conducted to construct a hypothetical model of depression in Korean adolescent women and validate the fit of the model to the empirical data. The data were collected from 345 high school girls in Seoul, from May 1 to June 30, 1998. The instruments were the Body Mass Index, Physical Satisfaction Scale, Family Adaptatibility and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III, Family Satisfaction Scale, CES-D and School Adptation Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with the pc -SAS program. The Linear Structural Relationship(LISREL) modeling process was used to find the best fit model which would predict the causal relationships among the variables. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate [X$^2$=69.6(df=17, p=.000), GFI =0.95, AGFI=0.90, RMR=0.087, NNFI=0.86, NFI=0.90]. The predictable variables, especially menstrual symptoms, physical symptoms and family function, had a significant direct effect on depression. but school life adaptation did not have a significant direct effect. These variables explained 18.1% of the total variance.

Studies on the Reproductive Performance and Treatment of Reproductive Disorder in Hanwoo (한우 번식우 농가의 번식실태 및 번식장애 치료에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the reproductive status and the effect of progesterone treatment on the recovery of reproductive disorders in Hanwoo. Hanwoo farms were surveyed the general management status, such as the type of barn, the feed intake, the incidence of reproductive disorders. The reproductive disorder cattle were treated 7 days insertion of control internal drug releasing for cattle (CIDR) and injection of PGF$_2$$\alpha$ at 1 day before removal. The recovery of reproductive disorders was assessed by determining the pregnancy following artificial insemination. The total number of surveyed Hanwoo farms was 127, and the total incidence rate of reproductive disorders was 19.7% (209/1,061). Compared to the herd size, the incidence rates of reproductive disorders in less than 10 heads (37.5%) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than in 10 to 20 heads (14.7%) and more than 20 heads (13.6%) of herd size per farm. The incidence rate of reproductive disorders in tie stall barn was significantly (P<0.05) higher than in free stall barn (30.4% vs. 14.7%), and even in free stall barn, that tended to decrease as the floor area was larger. The incidence rate of reproductive disorder by the parity was highest in heifer (50.7%), and that tended to decrease as the parity was increased. The distribution rate of the case of reproductive disorder in anestrus, recovery rate of reproductive disorders fellowing CIDR treatment was 75.1% (157/209). In the recovery rate of reproductive disorders by body condition score (BCS), BCS 1, 2 and 3 was significantly (P<0.05) higher pregnancy rate (85.7, 84.9 and 86.8%), and gross recovery rate in emaciated cattle was better than in obese cattle (BCS 4, 5). In conclusion, the incidence rate of reproductive disorders in Hanwoo raised in Youngju province area was 19.7%, and that tended to decrease as the herd size was increase because of increased farmer's attentions, and the floor area was larger. The majority of the case of reproductive disorders was anestrus. The recovery rate of reproductive disorders following CIDR treatment was 75.1%, and to optimize the recovery rate of reproductive disorders, cows and heifers were maintained BCS 1, 2 and 3 by moderate management.
