Background : Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at increased risk for osteoporosis, which has implications for mobility and even mortality. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) and risk factors for osteoporosis in a limited number of men with COPD. Methods : We checked BMD, $FEV_1$(% of predicted) and investigated risk factors for osteoporosis in 44 male patients with COPD who visited our hospital from January to August 2002. Results : Mean(${\pm}$) age was $69{\pm}9$ yrs, body mass index(BMI) $21{\pm}3kg/m^2$, $FEV_1$$50{\pm}18%$ of predicted, lumbar spine T-score $-3.0{\pm}1.2$, lumbar spine Z-score $-2.0{\pm}1.2$, and lumbar spine BMD $0.76{\pm}0.13g/cm^2$. Osteoporosis(T-score below -2.5) was present in 27 patients(61.4%) and osteopenia(T-score between -1 and -2.5) in 17(38.6%). None of the patients had normal BMD. There was no relationship between BMD and $FEV_1$(% of predicted). There were significant differences in smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, cumulative steroid dose, BMI and BMD among the three groups according to $FEV_1$(% of predicted) (group1 : ${\geq}65%$, group2 : 50-64%, group3 : ${\leq}49%$), except age. However, there were no significant differences in these variables between the osteopenia and osteoporosis groups, except BMI. Linear Regression(Stepwise) analysis showed that lumbar BMD was correlated with BMI & exercise. Conclusion : BMD is significantly reduced in men with COPD. There was no relationship between BMD and pulmonary function.
In this paper, the correlation between voice vowels and human body is analysed for the voice therapy and diagnosis. Using vowels('a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u'), the vibration signals in head, chest and belly is measured with the voice signal. As the result, it is shown that body characteristics can be checked from some vowels, and the correlation coefficient of body vibration signal and BMI(body mass index) is computed. From the result, using voice signal and body vibrations, the body diagnosis model is proposed.
The purpose of this study was to find out how diagnosis of hyperlipemia differed for according to BMI and %Fat. The included subjects were 224 adult women, they performed physical measurement and BMI measured %Fat by BIA. Blood pressure and lipid profiles were measured in the NPO state. The LDL calculated in using a formula of Friedwald and an atherogenic index was calculated using the serum TC lever divided by th HDL level As a results, HDL decreases so that BMI and %Fat increase and TC, TG, LDL, AI appeared by increasing. There was significant correlation(r=.585) between BMI and %Fat, and lipid profile correlation with BMI is higher than %Fat. In conclusion, diagnosis results of hyperlipemia according to BMI and %Fat could become different conclusively. In study it seems that BMI's diagnosis ability on hyperlipemia is high but the most desirable method uses BMI and %Fat together and evaluates lipid profile.
Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of Tai Chi exercise program on BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms in patient with schizophrenia. Methods: The participants were patient with schizophrenia in S psychiatric hospital in D city. Twenty five patients were assigned to experimental group, and 26 patients were assigned to control group. Data were collected from May 9, to July 8, 2011. The Tai Chi exercise program was conducted with a duration of 60 minutes, 2 times a week for 8 weeks (a total 8 times). Measures were BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test and t-test with SPSS/WIN 19.0 version. Result: The experimental group received Tai Chi exercise program had a significant changes in BMI, positive and negative psychiatric symptoms. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between body image and BMI with satisfaction of own body image, snack intake practices, food intake practices and weight control practices of 226 female college students in Jeonbuk province using questionnaire. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The average height, weight and BMI was 162.08cm, 52.02kg and 19.78, respectively. The average ideal body weight of the subjects was 48.92kg. Ninety percent of the subjects was dissatisfied with their body image. The degree of dissatisfaction was higher in the group who recognized themselves as fat. Most of subjects wanted to lose weight, but as the group having a recognition of thin body image significantly wanted to gain weight (p<0.001). 2. The subjects preferred fruits and juices for snack. The more subjects recognized themselves as fat, the more they restricted snack intake (p<0.05). 3. The rate of skipping meal tends to increase. The subjects did not intake balanced meals and skipped breakfast most (20.7%). The number of food groups taken at breakfast, lunch and dinner was 1.84, 2.25 and 2.55, respectively and the most variable food groups were taken at dinner(p<0.001). Dairy food group intake was low. The duration of meal time was longer in the underweight group by BMI regardless of body image recognition (p<0.05). 4. The weight controlling method was concentrated mostly on decreasing food intake. The more subjects recognized themselves as fat, the more they tried to control weight (p<0.001). Even though 59.5% of the subjects with no weight control experience had no future weight control plans, 50% of the group who recognized themselves as normal or fat did not want to control weight in the future (p<0.01). These results suggest that nutrition education programs and correction programs of food behaviors and weight control should start from focusing on the accurate recognition of body image for college female students.
This study retrospectively analyzed the test results of 113 healthy postmenopausal women without special diseases among patients who visited a medical institution in Busan from January 2020 to June 2021. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of BMI (Body Mass Index) on bone density in menopause women, the analysis of the lumbar and femur of patients with low weight (BMI<18.5) showed a significant probability (p-value) of 0.000, and the normal weight (18.5≦BMI<23.0) of the femur. In overweight (23.0≦BMI<25.0), the significance probability (p-value) of the lumbar region was 0.021 and the significance probability (p-value) of the femur was 0.034, confirming the correlation. However, in patients with high obesity (30.0≦BMI<40.0), the p-value of the lumbar region was 0.127, and the p-value of the femur was 0.093, indicating that there was no correlation between BMI and bone density.
This study examined the differences in appearance orientation and appearance management behavior in groups (classified by the body mass index) as well as explored the differences in each of demographic variables. Data were collected from 513 respondents from the city of Daegu as well as Gyeongbuk province. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Duncan tests. The results showed that 14.3% of the respondents were underweight, 60.0% normal, and 25.7% overweight according to BMI. The appearance orientation of the respondents was revealed to be high. Skin care was the most popular appearance management behavior, followed by make-up, clothing selection, hair care and weight training. Due to appearance orientation by body type, the appearance orientation for the underweight was the highest followed by normal and overweight. There were significant differences in skin care, make-up, clothing selection, hair care among the three groups in appearance management behavior; however, no differences in weight training. Generally, appearance management behavior of the underweight was the highest, followed by the normal and the overweight. In addition, there were significant group differences in appearance orientation and appearance management behavior according to demographic variables. This study contributes basic information to the field of appearance management behavior research and beauty industry marketing strategy through a better understanding of the relationships of BMI, appearance orientation, and appearance management behavior.
Objectives : In children and adolescents, the prevalence of overweight has increased in the last 20 years. little research is available on the prevalence of obesity in children with autism spectrum disorders(ASD). The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of overweight among a clinical population of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders(ASD). Methods : Retrospective chart review of children ages 3-18 years seen between 2012 and 2015 at a Konyang University hospital psychiatric clinic. Diagnostic, medical, and demographic information was extracted from the charts. Body mass index(BMI) was calculated from measures of height and weight recorded in the child's chart. The Center for Disease Control's BMI growth reference was used to determine an age and gender-specific BMI z-score for the children. Results : In our study, children with ASD compared to non ASD group had significantly higher BMI percentiles (p=0.032). The prevalence of overweight($BMI{\geq}85th$ to 95th percentiles) and obesity($BMI{\geq}95th$ percentiles) was 35% and 19% respectively in children with ASD and without ASD. Conclusions : Despite noted limitations, our data suggest that overweight and obesity in children with ASD are more prevalent than without ASD. Longitudinal and further study is needed to examine the factors associated with obesity in this population.
This research aims at investigating the measures of agreement between BMI classification standard and that of 9-point contour drawing rating scale(CDRS), verifying their usefulness for the application to the filed, examining university students' substantial understanding of their bodies, and offering correct information regarding the distorted recognition of their bodies. In order to examine the measures of agreement between the classification standard of BMI and that of CDRS, and the women university students' recognition of their body images depending on BMI, Cross tabulation was carried out, and ${\chi}^2$, Spearman rank correlation coefficient and kappa statistics were calculated. As the analysis results, the classification standards of CDRS and BMI judged by general female college students showed statistically the correlation was high with ${\rho}=.719$(p<.001) and an average level of confirmity with ${\kappa}=.506$(p<.001). Based on these results, regarding body shape, sizes and shapes according to racial characteristics need to be controlled later.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect on the vertical ground reaction force, the elapsed time, and the center of pressure factors during gait by maepsi exercise program, which is a whole body exercise, to middle-aged women for 8 weeks. A total of 25 subjects participated in this study, 13 in the exercise group(age, 41±4.4 years; heigh, 162.5±5.8cm; weight, 57.8±6.7kg; body mass, 21.9±2.4kg/m2) and 12 in the control group(age, 41.1±5.6 years; height, 160.9±5.5 cm; weight, 576.2±8.1 kg; body mass, 21.7±2.9 kg/m2). In the exercise group, the maepsi exercise program consisting of 7 areas, 23 types and 77 movements, was conducted 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed to verify the ground reaction force factors during gait, and the post-test was analyzed with bonferroni adjustment(a=.05). In the exercise group, compared to the control group, the exercise group showed higher values than the control group in the elapsed time to FMWA and FPO, vertical ground reaction force at FMWA and FPO, and RMS factors of COP in the AP direction. Therefore, it was found that the 8-week maepsi exercise program improved the acceleration and deceleration exercise functions of middle-aged women who performed gait.
