The subjects included 9,635 adolescents who perceived their body type as overweight, despite having a normal body mass index. The main finding indicated that high levels of fast food consumption were associated with significantly higher feelings of stress, sadness, and despair in both males and females. In addition, both males and females experienced elevated levels of stress, sadness, and despair when they perceived that they were not sufficiently physically active. • The survival rate of children with cancer has increased significantly from less than 30% in 1960s to 75% during the recent years with the development of modern medical technologies. As a result, the cancer of children today is no longer classified as incurable diseases. Rather, it is recognized as a chronic illness. However, children with cancer are still suffering from physical and psychosocial ailments caused by long-term hospitalization. In particular, teenagers are more likely to be affected by these problems because of interests on one's appearance and peer relationships This study investigated the relationship of the level of body distortion and disease adjustment of children with cancer, and how demographic factors, disease factors, and the level of body distortion affect disease adjustment. Data were collected between October 22, 2007 and November 16, 2007 and the total respondents consisted of 82 children, ages 10 to 18. SPSS 12.0 with descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation and multiple regression were used for data analysis. The results showed that the factors which influence the disease adjustment of children with cancer were age, school enrollment, and the level of body distortion. The result of this study has major implications for the government to provide support for children with cancer to stay in school. Additionally, programs that assist children to build positive body images need to be developed in accordance with their ages and psychosocial characteristics.

  • We attempted to determine how adolescents' general characteristics, appearance stress, and anxiety affect adolescents' body image distortion using data from the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. We confirmed Body image distortion in 38.2% of the subjects, and the results of underestimated body image in 19.9% and overestimation in 18.3%. Appearance stress and anxiety were found to have an effect in both underestimate and overestimate groups. We confirmed that demographic characteristics such as gender, economic level, and academic level influence different aspects in the underestimation and overestimation groups. Therefore, we suggested that comprehensive evaluation by subdividing the subjective perception of adolescents' weight into cases of overestimation and underestimation will be an important factor in determining mental health and weight control behavior in the future.

  • Appearance management is a serious issue for adults and young people in Korean society. People of various ages have used diverse means to improve their appearances. This study focused on dieting as an appearance management behavior in female adolescents. Dieting behaviors are not just a means to improve appearance; they may also relate to individuals' beliefs and self-control. The importance of individual psychological/personality factors cannot, therefore, be ruled out. Such factors can help explain personality factors explain "what causes a compulsive diet and what factors can alleviate it". This study reviewed the literature on perfectionism and self-control as individual personality factors, and empirically examined the effects of these variables on perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. We performed a structural equation model analysis to verify our hypothesis. The results are as follows: we found perfectionism to be positively related to perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors; we also found self-control to be negatively related to perceived body distortion though unrelated to dieting behaviors; finally, our analysis identified a relationship between perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. These results indicate that perfectionism and self-control should be considered when conducting guidance and counseling sessions on issues related to dieting behaviors for adolescent' appearance management. This paper concludes by discussing the study's implications and limitations.

  • This study aims to analyze the physical distortions of fashion design which appear in the 20th century. People have been expressing the hope and beauty by twisting human body since the beginning of mankind. Each period has been showing different forms according to various social and cultural environments. The exaggerated body distortions from the primitive times to the modern are based on human body proportions. Such distortion is to emphasize the inherent beauty within the human body. However, the distortions of the body after the 20th century have been developed with the advent of surrealism which is not affected by reasons but by imaginations. Generally speaking, the reconstruction of the heterogeneous elements is allowed in art. The unexpected surreal elements are creating formative beauty using by distinctly different technique which is unfamiliar and awkward. Physical distortion creates other beauty that is not uniform and absolute beauty but it pursues the diversity of breaking down into categories. Formativeness of surreal physical distortion fashion has the potential for a variety of clothing design, therefore it has intrinsic values for continuous study.

  • Grotesque, which has often emerged as a breakthrough in Western art to protest rational and classical pure beauty, is often seen in modern art. Grotesque, along with the concept of pendulum, appears in infinitely expanded forms across cultures, arts, and society. In particular, transformed body images through deformatization and deformatization of the body are interpreted as strong rejections that seek to break away from formalized beauty. The main purpose of this study is how the body reproduced through body deformation, distortion, and bonding in Dimitris Papaioannou's work can be interpreted within the grotesque category. To this end, he examines the Grotesque discourse and modern meaning underlying the interpretation of the work and identifies how the fragmented and expanding body, which is currently actively discussed in the dance world, has an interaction with Grotesque. It selects , , , and , which are the main attributes of the grotesque, focus on conflicting familiarity, life, hatred, and beauty. Based on this, we would like to confirm that in contemporary dance, the reconstructed body reveals concealed things rather than expressing an unrealistic fictional world, and seeks new possibilities beyond boundaries as well as reconsider existing aesthetic views.
