Business Strategies of Japanese Newspaper Companies: Top-level Managers' Perception and Reacting toward the Newspaper Crisis (일본 신문기업의 경영전략 연구: 경영진의 위기인식과 대응책을 중심으로)

  • This paper reviews the problems and opportunities of Japanese newspaper industry. In the focus are particularly issues related to causes of the crisis and reacting strategies overcoming the crisis. To answer the questions, we conducted in-depth interviews with top-level managers of major newspaper companies in Japan. Secondary data were gathered to complement the interview. Top managers mainly perceived the causes of the crisis as young readers' alienation from newspaper due to the change of media environment and structural factors such as increasing production/distribution costs and diminishing appeals for advertisers. They are implementing several strategies to overcome this crisis - developing newspaper content for young readers; packaging customized on-off line advertisement; extending news distribution via online and mobile platforms; diversifying business into diverse sectors such as real-estate; enhancing brand equity of newspaper; and collaborating with rival newspaper companies in operating news site and joint printing/distribution. Lessons from the case of Japanese newspaper industry may be useful starting points for the Korean newspaper companies agonizing for diminishing circulation and advertising revenues.

  • The explosive growth of the Internet and the increasing popularity of the World Wide Web have generated significant interest in the development of electronic commerce in a global online marketplace. The rapid adoption of the Internet as a commercial medium is rapidly expanding the necessity of Web advertisement as a new communication channel. if proper Web advertisement could be suggested to the right user, then effectiveness of Web advertisement will be raised and it will help company to earn more profit. So, this article describes a personalized advertisement technique as a part of intelligent customer services for an electronic newspaper provide. Based on customers history of navigation on the electronic newspapers pages, which are divided into several sections such as politics, economics, sports, culture, and so on, appropriate advertisements (especially, banner ads) are chosen and displayed with the aid of machine learning techniques, when customers visit to the site. To verify feasibility of the technique, an application will be made to one of the most popular e-newspaper publishing company in Korea.

A study on sustainable direction of web-marketing and web-advertising performance (바람직한 웹마케팅의 방향과 웹광고 성과에 관한 연구)

  • Web-ads often distract users' online activities. Web-ads even deter users from comprehending the website contents. As these irritated users try to avoid web-ads, advertising agencies make web-ads even more noticeable to grasp users' attention. The factors that attract users should increase web-ad performance. However, this study confirms that those efforts irritate users and decrease web-ad performance. Also, this study shows that irritated users eventually try to avoid re-visiting the websites. This study also confirms that excessive web-ads on Internet news websites bring more confusion to users than on e-commerce websites. This finding supports the importance of more sustainable web activities on the Internet news websites as users expect objective and fair contents. Based on these results, this study proposes the directions of web-ads activities for the common good and self-interests of the stakeholders.

  • 한말 신문광고를 유심히 살펴보면 최최의 전문적인 서적상이라 할 '대동서시'가 문을 연 1896년 이후부터 한일합방 때까지의 15년간, 경향 각지에 무려 70여곳의 서점이 있었던 것으로 확인된다. 이는 경술국치를 전후한 시기에 고작 10여개의 서점이 서울에서 영업을 하고 있었다는 지금까지의 통설을 크게 수정한다는 점에서 눈길을 끈다.

  • As interpretation of descriptive illustrations without caption differs from each viewer, it is deemed that the effect of attention is represented differently and the acceptance level of any advertisements will be ultimately different according to the visualization method of concept in the creative. The purpose of this research is to recognize the reality and status of visualization for real estate ads in newspapers via visualization analysis through Otto Kleppner's visualization model and to reasonably and efficiently conduct creative of real estate ads by representing problems and their solutions based on the surrey. These activities are to more efficiently produce real estate ads, which occupy a relatively important portion in newspaper ads.

An Analysis of Ginseng Advertisements in 1920-1930s Newspapers During Japanese Colonial Period (일제강점기 중 1920-1930년대 신문에 실린 인삼 광고 분석)

  • The influx of modern culture in the early 20th century in Korea led to numerous changes in the country's ginseng industry. With the development of ginseng cultivation technology and commerce, the production and consumption of ginseng increased, and various ginseng products were developed using modern manufacturing technology. Consequently, competition for the sales of these products became fierce. At that time, newspaper advertisements showed detailed trends in the development and sales competition of ginseng products. Before 1920, however, there were few advertisements of ginseng in newspapers. This is thought to be because newspapers had not yet been generalized, and the ginseng industry had not developed that much. Ginseng advertisements started to revitalize in the early 1920s after the launch of the Korean daily newspapers Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo. Such advertisements in this period focused on emphasizing the traditional efficacy of Oriental medicine and the mysterious effects of ginseng. There were many advertisements for products that prescribed the combination of ginseng and deer antler, indicating the great popularity of this prescription at the time. Furthermore, advertisements showed many personal experience stories about taking such products. Mail order and telemarketing sales were already widely used in the 1920s . In 1925, there were advertisements that ginseng products were delivered every day. The advertisements revealed that ginseng roots were classified more elaborately than they are now according to size and quality. Ginseng products in the 1920s did not deviate significantly from the scope of traditional Oriental medicine formulations such as liquid medicine, pill, and concentrated extract. In the 1930s, ginseng advertisements became more active. At this time, experts such as university professors and doctors in medicine or in pharmacy appeared in the advertisements. They recommended ginseng products or explained the ingredients and medicinal effects of the products. Even their experimental notes based on scientific research results appeared in the advertisements to enhance the reliability of the ginseng products. In 1931, modern tablet advertisements appeared. Ginseng products supplemented with vitamins and other specific ingredients as well as ginseng thin rice gruel for the sick appeared at this time. In 1938, ginseng advertisements became more popular, and advertisements using talents as models, such as dancer Choi Seunghee or famous movie stars, models appeared. Ginseng advertisements in the 1920s and 1930s clearly show a side of our rapidly changing society at the time.

  • Modern society has created the age of mass media image. Advertising media strongly stimulate and influence the image contact and the frequency of receivers by visual communication media in everyday life. Until today no consciousness concerning the necessity of typographic visual image and it's selection for newspaper advertising has been developed. The necessity of headline typography visual image in newspaper advertising and it's selection should be considered a problem that must be solved by a more reasonable and logical approach, like it is done in the case of advertising copy, in order to increase the efficiency of advertising for the consumer.
