  • The study was carried out to identify the characteristics of leafy shapes, and to establish the cultural practices such as shading condition, fertilization method, and planting distance of Cirsium nipponicum. Leaf shapes in this plant consist of two kinds, lobation and non-lobation which has two spur type showing large and small spur. Protein band patterns showed that a new protein band in non-lobation with large spur was appeared at the 116.4kDa. For shading condition and fertilization method, number of stems in non-shading and organic matter treatment was higher than that of shading 55% with 3.7. Fresh leaf yield on non-shading and organic matter treatment was higher than that of other treatments. Growth characteristics of leaf number was increased in the $60\times30cm$ treatment, but was redeuced to some extent compared with $60\times45cm$. To increase the fresh leaf yield, the optimum planting distance was $30\times20cm$ with 4,100kg/10a.

  • The objective of this study was carried out to elucidate the effect of LEDs (light emitting diodes) irradiation in relation to early growth and inorganic elements in leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Rollo Rosa'). In morphological changes of leaves, shoot elongation and hypocotyl length showed poor growth in red light irradiation, while the red + blue light irradiation induced shorter plant height and much greater leaf numbers resulting in increased fresh weight. In change of the Hunter's color and SPAD values, lettuce seedlings grown under in red + blue and fluorescent light irradiation had a higher $a^*$ value, otherwise SPAD values were not changed in these light irradiations. Interestingly, relative chlorophyll contents showed 1.8 times increased redness in the treatment of red + blue light irradiation. Inorganic element (N, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fe) and ascorbic acid contents were increased in lettuce plants grown under LEDs light irradiation compared to those of lettuce grown under the fluorescent light which showed higher P and Mn contents. In conclusion, it is considered that red + blue light irradiation which stimulates growth and higher nutrient uptake in leaf lettuce could be employed in containers equipped with LEDs.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of planting date and planting density on the growth and yield characters of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia POEPP) and to establish cultivation method in the middle region of Korea. An introduced variety of yacon was used. Seeding dates were from April 5 to April 7,and seedlings were trasplanted three times on the May 25, june 5, and June 15 with the intervals of 10 days. Planting densities were 80(width) $\times$ 35(distance) cm, 80 $\times$ 45cm, and 80 $\times$ 55cm. Plant height was not significant among planting dates, but was longer in the order of 80 $\times$ 55cm, 80 $\times$ 35cm, and 80 $\times$ 35cm among planting densities. Fresh weight of top part was heavier as the planting dates were faster and planting densities were narrower. Total yeid of tuber had no significant among planting dates and was higher in the density with 80 $\times$ 45cm and had the same tendency in the yeild of commercial goods. Correlation coefficient between plant height and yeild of commercial goods was highly positive(r= 0.927**).

  • A liquid bio-formulation containing chitinolytic bacteria, chitin and their products was assessed for its potential biological control against root-knot nematodes on cucumber. The bio-formulation was prepared by cultures of three chitinolytic bacteria, Chromobacterium sp. strain C-61, Lysobacter engymogenes and Serratia plymuthica in minimal medium supplemented with chitin. Under pot conditions, the bio-formulation showed better growth of cucumber plants, and less root galls and population density of Meloidogyne spp. than control media without the bio-formulation. In a greenhouse, 75-fold diluted bio-formulations were treated instead of water around cucumber plants through hoses for drip irrigation six times at 5-day intervals from the transplanting date. After 30 and 60 days, the treatment provided about 7% and 10% enhancement in the plant height and about 78% and 69% reduction in population density of Meloidogyne spp. in the rhizosphere, respectively. In addition, the experiments showed that the control effects occurred only in the soils contacted with the bio-formulation. Undiluted bio-formulations were drenched three times at 10-day intervals around cucumber plants severely infested with Meloidogyne spp. The treatment showed about 37% plant enhancement without dead plants compared with 37% death in the untreated control, and about 82% nematode reduction. These results suggest that the bio-formulation can be practically used to control the root-knot nematode on cucumber.

  • Field experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of wollastonite and iron refinery slag on the paddy rice yield insandyloam soil in which available silica level is 56 ppm. The results are as follows: 1. Application of wollastonite and iron refinery slag reduced the tillering and the height of rice plant in the early growth stage, while promoted those in the late growth stage. 2. As the same amounts of wollastonite and iron refinery slag were applied, the effectiveness on yield increase was same between the two silicate fertilizers. 3. The recovery ratio as measured by absorbed $SiO_2$ on rice plant over applied $SiO_2$, was greater in wollastonite than in iron refinery slag. 4. The increasing of the ratio of $SiO_2$ over N absorbed in rice plant trends toward decreasing the infection rate of neck blast. 5. The left-over ratio of available $SiO_2$ in soil over applied $SiO_2$, was greater in iron refinery slag than in wollastonite. 6. As measured by silica soluble in 0.5 N-HCl solution, 1 kg application per 10a of both silicate fertilizers increased about 2.3 ppm in soil silica content after harvest, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to clarify several factors affecting embryogenesis from anther culture of nine cultivars in Brassica oleracea L. var. italica and to investigate the characteristics of plants derived from anther culture. Androgenesis from anther culture was elevated on the B5 medium supplemented with 0.1mg/L NAA, 0.1mg/L 2.4-D and 10% sucrose. Embryo production in liquid medium was five-fold higher than solid medium. High temperature treatment at 35$^{\circ}C$ for one day before transfer to culture room maintained at $25^{\circ}C$ had effective to induce embryogenesis of cultured anthers but extended treatment at 35$^{\circ}C$ decreased significantly the percent of embryogenesis. Frequency of embryogenesis from cultured anthers exhibited significant difference from 2.8% in 'Green Valiant' to 21% in 'Haisi' as affected by genotypes. Percent of spontaneously dihaploid among regenerated plants from anther culture was ranged from 62 to 74% as affected by the genotypes. Characteristic in relation to plant height, number of leaves and branches, and size of head from anther-derived plants showed differential variation in 'Rokguray' and 'Haisi'. Among these charaters obtained from two cultivars, five lines were selected for early maturity, long plant height and large head. Selected lines were used as breeding meterials for F$_1$ hybrid.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of pinching time on growth and quality of Glycyrrhiza uralensis soil cultured in Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Service from 2008 to 2009. The treated pinching time were given as the June 30, July 30, August 30, and non-pinching (control). The amounts of pinching were 20% of stem length each plant. The obtained results from this study were summarized as follows; The plant height and number of branches were higher in control than pinching treatments. The stem and leaf weight were increase with early pinching. The plant height and stem diameter were not affected by pinching time. There was no regular trends in runner growth. We found that pinching was induced root growth, and early pinching was accelerated root growth. The root yield was increased in JUN and JUL pinching treatments as 11-30% in 2 years plants and 6-11% in 3 years plants compared to control as 238 kg/10a and 432 kg/10a, respectively.

  • This study examined radiation damage and the optimal gamma-ray dose for mutation breeding in oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Samhan). The seed germination rate decreased as the dose increased over 500 Gy. The median lethal dose (LD50) was approximately 392 Gy. The median reduction dose (RD50) for plant height, tiller number, root length, and flash weight was 411, 403, 394, and 411 Gy, respectively. The optimal dose of gamma irradiation for inducing oat mutation appears to be in the range 300-400 Gy. We performed the comet assay to observe nuclear DNA damage induced by gamma-ray irradiation. This assay showed a clear difference with gamma-ray treatments. DNA damage increased temporarily 7 days after treatment depending on the dose, while no significant difference was identified in response to 300 Gy 30 days after the gamma-ray treatments. The growth characteristics of the M2 generation decreased as the dose increased over 400 Gy.
