This study purports to analyze how individuals' labor market integration affect their transition to marriage. In doing so, I construct variables for job stability and continuity to represent labor market integration using labor force status and years of participation at the time of marriage and during the three years up to the point of marriage. In particular, I focus on differential effects of these labor market integration on the transition to marriage by cohorts: one for those who are likely to enter the labor market after the 1997 financial crisis and the other for those who are before the 1997 financial crisis. I used the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study and analyzed individuals aged above 18 in 2008. The main results are as follows. being currently employed and regular employment increases hazards of the first marriage for men but decreases them for women. long-term no-jobs decreases hazards of marriage for both women and men. long-term regular employment increases hazards of marriage for women but not for men at the statistically significant level. These effects vary by cohorts implying that recent economic and labor market instability deteriorated economic conditions for the youth making transitions to marriage.
This article investigates the patterns of workforce aging in each industry, and examines how changing industrial structure affected the labor-market demand for and employment security of older workers in Korea. The relative size of the industries that are major employers of older workers has relatively declined since 2001, resulting in a decrease in labor-market demand for aged persons. Changes in industrial structure that occurred during the last decade have also brought an overall deterioration in the extent of employment security of older workers. These results suggest that the economic environment surrounding policies aimed at encouraging the employment of older workers is not entirely favorable. This paper also points out that policy makers need to consider that employment conditions of older workers are highly heterogenous across industries.
Many students accumulate work experience while they attend college. Using data from Korean Youth Panel, I investigate the effects of in-school work experience on school-to-work process. Work during college contributes to take first job quickly after school, but has no significant effect on wage level of first job. These results show that in-school work experience might help job search but not provide skills and knowledge. These findings suggest that it is necessary to link the youth internship programme to in-school learning in collaboration with school.

This study aims at exploring the change of the total fertility rate(TFR) in regional level and analysing what different effects the local labor market and housing market have on the change of TFR. Previous studies have emphasized that the job and housing issues of the youth are structural factors on the decline of TFR. However, considering that youth problem is variant in local level, the relationship of job and housing issues with TFR could be different in local level. This study analyses what effects the situation of local labor market and housing market have on the TFR from 2012 to 2018 in regional level. The result is that the employment and housing factors have different effects on capital areas and non-capital areas. While the high cost of housing has negative effects on TFR in capital areas, it has rather positive effects in non-capital areas. However, labor market variables have statistically insignificant effects on TFR.
Under-utilization of Korean women's education in the labor market has been observed and pointed out as a waste of valuable human resources. Although education provides women with positive returns when they work, it has been found that Korean women's education is not much related to the likelihood of women's labor force participation. This tendency cannot be explained by micro-economic theory, which says that educated women are more likely to participate in the labor force. Thus, in this analysis, a macro-level explanation is attempted to understand Korean women's economic behaviors in relation to education. Korea's rapid industrialization since 1960 has provided ample job opportunities mostly for less educated women. On the other hand, increasing demand for educated female labor has been moderate. Various restriction against women, especially married women, have prevailed in the Korean labor market. Restrictions against women and the marriage bar tend to be selectively applied to decent white-collar jobs, mostly affecting educated women. Furthermore, there has been no shortage of educated male labor due to its adequate supply. Since Korean women spend most of their adult lives in marriage, married women's low participation in the labor force is a critical factor for the low economic returns to women's education throughout their lifetime. Restriction against married women in the labor market also existed in the past of the United States and the Great Britain. However, along with the expansion of the service sector, married women in great numbers flowed into non-manual jobs. The post-1940 increase of married women in the labor force in those countries can be understood to be a result of a labor shortage for non-manual jobs. Also in Taiwan, which shares many common cultural and economic backgrounds with Korea, the marriage bar has been in decline since the late 1970s, along with an increasing demand for female labor in the service sector. In sum, the changes in the demand structure and the supply of educated male labor force will contribute to the lift of the marrige bar in Korea.
This study investigates the employment structure and the social safety net experience of the subcontracting cleaning workers in Korea, who have been main targets of the labor outsourcing despite the necessity and permanence of their labour. This study specifically focuses on the fact that these subcontracting cleaning workers are mostly female and in their old age, and analyzes how the combination of their age, gender, and employment structure leads to the (mis)match with the Korean social security system. Case study with in-dept interview method has been conducted to the old-aged female subcontracting cleaning workers in Korea. The result of this study is as follows. It was the income insecurity that led them to (re)enter the labour market, and the cleaning work was the almost the only wage work they could do considering their age and gender. Cleaning workers are mostly employed in the subcontracting company, and thus their labour contracts depend on the business contract period between the original and subcontracting company. Consequently, their employment relationship is mostly insecure unless they are guaranteed employment succession through the collective agreement of trade union. Moreover, it has been discovered that the employment insecurity due to the indirect employment relationship led to the poor labour conditions, low wage, and the exclusion from the social safety net.
The public interventions to care work affect women's labor participation as well as quality of care jobs in the market. We identify five different patterns of ways in which care work has been socialized. Some ways of intervention tend to reinforce the commodification of care work through producing it in the market area. Other ways of intervention has a lot of hazard to return care work to women in the families, after all. We can call it re-familization. Whether care work is re-familized or not largely depends on the ways of public supports for care: cash benefit vs. in-kind benefit. Cash benefits for women's care work negatively affect on their labor market participation. The effects vary across family income levels. In other words, you may expect that cash benefits for care work may reduce female labor supply in lower income classes. The marketization of care service provision may worsen the quality of care jobs while the public provision tends to increase the wage level of care jobs.
This paper investigates how technological change and the consequential occupational choices do influence the recent Korea labor market. Following Autor, Levy and Murnane (2003) and Autor, Katz and Kearney (2006), it shows that decreasing price of computer assets raises relative wages for nonroutine tasks and the self-selected occupational choices with increasing demands for computerization in routine tasks would be a main cause for the job polarization in the labor market.
I estimate the non-market effects of implementing five-day workweek controlling for the individual-job fixed effect. I find that the implementation of five-day workweek has improved an individual's subjective health status, increased the frequency of exercises, increased the probability to get education or training other than job training, improved subjective quality of life, increased spending for leisure and cultural activities, and improved an individual's satisfaction with the job and the employer. Much of the effects are due to reduction not of working hours but of working days.
