A Study on the Optimal Urban Bus Network Design Using the Set Covering Theory (Set Covering 이론을 이용한 시내버스 최적노선망 구축에 관한 연구)

  • This paper studies on the optimal bus network design in the framework of the set covering theory. The theory enables to cover passenger's loading and alighting areas as the set, and maximize the covering set as much as possible. In other words, it calculates the minimal set of the bus routes for covering whole bus passengers demand. After the optimal set of the bus routes is generated by the set covering theory, multimodal traffic equilibrium assignment is used for evaluating the generated set in terms of passenger's mode and route choice behavior. Whilst most previous works on it have been based on analyzing a specific route in a limited area, this study seeks to optimize the whole bus network.

Efficiency of the Hierarchical Structure for a Bus Network (시내버스 노선망 위계구조의 효율성 분석 (대전시 사례분석을 중심으로))

  • Four alternative plans for the bus network in Daejeon metropolitan city, which have different hierarchical structure, were proposed : Alternative 1 represents a bus network without hierarchical structure, and Alternative 2, 3, and 4 represent bus networks with primary, intermediate, and advanced hierarchical structures, respectively. Efficiency of the alternative plans were evaluated based on the evaluation index including travel time cost, waiting time cost, and transition penalty cost. The travel time cost was decreased as the level of hierarchical structure gets higher until it reaches the extremely high level. As the level of hierarchical structure get higher, the waiting time cost significantly decreased while the transition penalty cost increased. Collectively, a bus network with hierarchical structure was shown to be more efficient than without it in the light of total travel cost. For the bus network with hierarchical structure, total travel cost shows a concave curve, which implies that there exists an optimal level of hierarchical structure in a bus network.

Development of Integrated Accessibility Measurement Algorithm for the Seoul Metropolitan Public Transportation System (서울 대도시권 대중교통체계의 통합 시간거리 접근성 산출 알고리즘 개발)

  • This study proposes an integrated accessibility measurement algorithm, which is applied to the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of bus and subway networks, and analyzes the result. We construct a public transportation network graph linking bus-subway networks and take the time distance as the link weight in the graph. We develop a time-distance algorithm to measure the time distance between each pair of transit stations based on the T-card transaction database. The average travel time between nodes has been computed via the shortest-path algorithm applied to the time-distance matrix, which is obtained from the average speed of each transit route in the T-card transaction database. Here the walking time between nodes is also taken into account if walking is involved. The integrated time-distance accessibility of each node in the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system has been computed from the T-card data of 2013. We make a comparison between the results and those of the bus system and of the subway system, and analyze the spatial patterns. This study is the first attempt to measure the integrated time-distance accessibility for the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of 16,277 nodes with 600 bus routes and 16 subway lines.

Improvement of Bus Route System Considering Route Curvature (노선 굴곡도를 고려한 시내버스 체계 개선에 관한 연구)

  • In metropolitan cities have been reorganizing the routes of the city buses periodically due to changes in the spatial structure and traffic pattern and the lack of supply due to new developments. However, there is a lack of system to comprehensively evaluate the routes. Even if the evaluation index is not clearly defined, it may not be reasonable. Therefore, it is difficult to set the improvement direction when the bus route is reorganized. In this study, the existing evaluation indexes were reviewed and further investigation was conducted on the problematic indexes. In particular, the degree of curvature has been used as a very important index in the evaluation of the route system, but the existing curvature based curvature has a limitation in considering the traffic characteristics of individual users. For this purpose, a virtual city bus network was set up and the degree of curvature was calculated and compared based on the point - based curvature and stopping point based on individual user O/D. In this study, it is considered that more efficient and practical analysis and evaluation are possible in the evaluation of the city bus route system through the curvature considering the individual user O/D based on the stopping point. It is expected that it will be used at the time of reorganization of city bus route performed by individual local governments in the future.

Development of path travel time forecasting model using wavelet transformation and RBF neural network (웨이브렛 변환과 RBF 신경망을 이용한 경로통행시간 예측모형 개발 -시내버스 노선운행시간을 중심으로-)

  • 본 연구에서는 도시 가로망에서의 구간 통행시간을 예측하기 위하여 time-frequency 분석의 일종인 웨이브렛변환과 RBF신경망 모형을 이용한 예측모형을 개발하였다. 웨이브렛 변환을 이용한 시계열 자료 분석을 통해서 통행시간에 내재되어 있는 다양한 패턴의 특징을 추출함으로써 오전/오후의 첨두현상, 신호교차로의 현시주기 등 주기적으로 발생되는 요인들에 의해서 통행시간 시계열 자료의 패턴에 나타나는 규칙성을 분석해 내었다. 분석된 패턴정보에 대한 규명은 카오스 이론을 근간으로한 시간지연좌표를 이용하여 시계열 자료의 규칙성을 시각적으로 판별하여 예측모형 구축에 활용하도록 하였다. 또, RBF신경망을 이용하여 예측범위의 공간적/시간적 확대에 따른 모형 구축에 소요되는 시간을 최소화하도록 하였으며, 시내버스 노선의 정류장간 운행시간 예측을 통해서 기존 연구에서 제기되었던 현실세계의 단순화, 다단계 예측시 정확성 등의 문제를 해결하였다. 예측실험결과 웨이브렛 변환을 데이터의 전처리 과정에 삽입하여 링크 통행시간의 패턴정보 예측에 활용할 경우, 기존의 예측모형에 비해서 훨씬 정확한 예측이 가능한 것으로 나타났으며, RBF 신경망은 짧은 학습시간에도 불구하고 역전파 신경망보다 우수한 예측력을 갖고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

수도권 도시철도 시스템의 운영상 문제점과 개선 방향

  • 지난 30년간 수도권은 많은 변화를 겪어왔다. 무엇보다도 1970년에 948만 인에 불과하던 인구가 1990년에는 거의 투 배인 1,859만 인으로. 1998년에는 2,130만 인으로 계속 증가하였다. 버스만으로는 대중교수단의 역할을 수행할 수 없게 되자 1970년대 초반부터 도시철도를 건설하기 시작하였다. 이후 도시철도는 서울시전역에서 건설되기 시작해서 이제 서울시내 만에도 8개 노선, 총 연장 280 km의 지하철망을 구축하게 되었다. 지하철 외에 서울시 외곽 도시를 연결하는 7개 노선, 총 연장 172 km의 전철망 또한 구축되었다. 지하철망과 전철망을 합한 수도권내 도시철도망은 이제 14개 노선, 총 연장 452 km에 달하며, 승객수송 분담율에 있어서도 버스보다 더 높은 비중을 차지하고 있다. Timed-Transfer System: its Application and Effects on Bus Transit System (버스 동시환승체계의 적용과 효과분석)

  • In low-density areas where travel pattern is widely dispersed and travel demand is relatively low, transit operators find it very difficult to provide a reasonable level of service at a reasonable cost. Timed-transfer system or network, if designed properly, can provide a reasonable level of service for passengers using transit systems serving low-density areas. The paper intends to apply a timed-transfer system for bus lines serving Yangsan City area and to assess the effects resulted from the application. The concept of a timed-transfer network/system is briefly described, and the present conditions of bus systems in Yangsan City area are discussed, focusing on the aspects of network type and the related problems. The bus timed-transfer network for the area is then developed by adjusting the existing routes and network with the consideration of travel time, route alignments, headways and transfer centers. One must note that developing a timed-transfer network presumes that network and schedule should be developed together. The effects of the developed time-transfer system on the passengers and operators are found substantially so as to justify its introduction to the City. The results of this study will be of considerable use for planners to design the transit systems in low density areas, where in general travel activities are widely dispersed and travel demands are low, so that provision of good quality of transit services are difficult.

Quantitative Evaluation Indicators for the City Bus Route Network (시내버스노선체계 평가를 위한 정량적 지표의 설정 및 적용)

  • A balanced evaluation system for a bus route network was proposed for a mid-sized suburban city. The evaluation system consists of 7 criteria-accessibility, riding comfort. transfer rate, directness of route, productivity of operation, regional equity, and minimum requirement of bus fleet - and quantitative indicators representing each of the criteria. The proposed system was applied in Siheung, a suburban city in Seoul Metropolitan Area. Four alternative scenarios of bus route network including the existing one were evaluated. The results showed that the suggested criteria and indicators are acceptable for the evaluation of a bus route network. In order to enhance the proposed evaluation procedure, further studies on the normalization of produced values and weights for each of the indicators are needed.

An Analysis on the Efficiency of Bus Information Systems in Bucheon City (부천시 사례를 통한 버스정보시스템 운영효과 분석)

  • To activate public transportation service, Bucheon City built Bus Information System based on Beacon type, and operates it for no.22 line. This research analyzes an effect of BIS operations, and mainly it analyzes far reliability evaluation of bus arrival time information and passenger satisfaction about BIS. As results of reliability evaluation of arrival time information service, it is proven to be practically inappropriate to use as arrival time data because it is not only travel time between each bus stop but also previous travel time history data. In order to improve this matter, neural network model was evaluated as the most outstanding one as result of experiment in applying current arrival time Prediction model. This research cannot help limiting for evaluation of operation effect in Bucheon City because there is no Bus Information System based on GPS type in Korea. For the future ITS model city, in the case of building ITS model city based on GPS type, it is possible to compare two systems relatively. In addition to that, fur the consideration of reliability of bus arrival time information, it is required to develop Predictable model and research factors that affect to bus operation.

Estimation of the Marginal Walking Time of Bus Users in Small-Medium Cities (중·소도시 버스이용자의 한계도보시간 추정)

  • Establishing realistic bus service coverage is needed to build optimum city bus line networks and reasonable bus service coverage areas. The purposes of this study are understanding the characteristics of the present walking time and marginal walking time of small-medium cities and constructing an ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) model to estimate the marginal walking time for certain age and income. The cities of Masan, Chongwon and Jinju are selected for study cities. The 80 percentile of present walking time of bus users of these cities are 10.2-11.1 minutes, thus the values are greater than the 5 minutes of the maximum walking time in USA and the marginal walking times of 21.1-21.8 minutes are much greater. An ANFIS model based on pulled data of the cities are constructed to estimate the marginal walking time of small-medium cities. Analyzing the relationship between marginal walking time and age/income by using the model, the marginal walking time decreases as the age increases, but is near constant from the age of 25 to 35. And the marginal walking time is inversely proportional to the income. In comparing the surveyed and the estimated values, as the statistics of coefficient of determination, MSE and MAE are 0.996, 0.163, 0.333 respectively, it may be judged that the explainability of the model is very high. The technique developed in this study can be applied to other cities.
