  • Four different methods of reducing the heat transfer coefficients from experimental data under dehumidifying conditions are compared. The four methods consist of two different heat and mass transfer models and two different fin efficiency models. Data are obtained from two heat exchanger samples having plain fins or wave fins. Comparison of the data with the reduction methods revealed that the single potential heat and mass transfer model yielded the humidity independent heat transfer coefficients. Two different fin efficiency models - enthalpy model and humidity model - yielded approximately the same fin efficiencies and accordingly approximately the same heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficients under wet conditions were approximately the same as those of the dry conditions for the plain fin configuration. For the wave fin configuration, however, wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately 12% higher. The pressure drops of the wet surface were 10% to 45% larger than those of the dry surface.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the microleakage and penetration of two hydrophilic sealants, Embrace $Wetbond^{TM}$ and Ultraseal $XT^{(R)}$ $hydro^{TM}$, when applied on dry and moist enamel, as compared to a conventionally used hydrophobic sealant, $Clinpro^{TM}$. A total of 60 sound human third molars were randomly divided into 5 groups according to the enamel moisture control and the sealant material used. After sealant application, the teeth were thermocycled and immersed in 1% methylene blue dye. Subsequently, the teeth were sectioned twice and the sections were examined using an optical microscope and image analysis software. Application of Embrace $Wetbond^{TM}$ on either dry or moist enamel resulted in more microleakage than $Clinpro^{TM}$. Application of Ultraseal $XT^{(R)}$ $hydro^{TM}$ on dry enamel showed a similar level of microleakage to $Clinpro^{TM}$, but application on moist enamel resulted in more microleakage. There were no significant differences between the groups in penetration. In conclusion, application of hydrophilic sealants on moist enamel did not improve the sealing ability and showed lower sealing ability than that of $Clinpro^{TM}$ applied on dry enamel.

  • For the study of performance evaluation on different shape heat exchangers that have the same energy consumption in a refrigerator, we make performance evaluation coefficient (PEC) which can distinguish performance of different shape heat exchangers. The results were reported in order to compare with for the dry frosting and wet frosting test as various definition of PECs. Results showed that PEC of dry frosting test is higher than that of wet frosting test because attached water droplet increases pressure drop of air-side then this decreases performance of heat exchanger.

  • One method of increasing the heat-transfer rate is to increase the heat-transfer area. In this study, we test a wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 1.03, and we compare the results with those of a louver fin-andtube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 0.6. The results obtained show that the heat-transfer capacities of the wide louver samples are larger (16% in one row, 29% in two rows, and 38% in three row samples) than those of the louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 2.17, the increase in the heat-transfer capacity is somewhat small. The reason for this may be due to the smaller heat-transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The effect of the fin pitch on the j and f factors are not profounded. The j and f factors decreased as the number of tube rows increased. We compare the data obtained with existing correlations.

  • The present study has been conducted to understand the heat and mass transfer characteristics of humid airflow in frosting conditions. A flat plate of aluminum was used for the simulation of flat surface part of the fin of the heat exchanger. The aluminum surface temperatures were measured and analyzed to clarify the heat and mass transfer characteristics under frosting conditions. Also, the pressure drops were measured to clarify the air-blocking effect of frost in the mini channel of the air-side hoot exchangers. A data reduction method was developed far the analysis of local characteristics of humid air under frosting conditions.

  • In this study, wet surface heat transfer and friction characteristics of compound enhanced fin-and-tube heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. Louver-finned heat exchangers were also tested for comparison purpose. The effect of fin pitch on j and f factor was negligible. Both j and f factor decreased as number of tube row increased. Compound enhanced fin samples yielded higher j and f factors than louver fin samples. For one row, j and f factors of compound enhanced fin samples were 11% and 43% higher than those of louver fin samples. For two row, those were 8% and 50%, and for three row, those were 17% and 53%. Heat transfer capacities at the same pressure drop of the compound enhanced fin samples were 2.0% for one row, 3.1% for two row and 8.4% for three row larger than those of louver fin samples, Data were compared with predictions of existing louver fin correlations.

For two row, average j/f ratios of slit fin samples are 11.5% larger. A new correlation was developed using the present data.

  • In order to understand the heat and mass transfer characteristics of humid airflow in frosting conditions, a flat plate of aluminum with cooling modules located in the central part of the plate was used. A microscope system (resolution of 0.05 mm) was used for the measurement of local thickness of frost at seven points along the plate in the flow direction. For the total mass of frost at each test operation, an electronic balance (resolution of 1 mg) was used. The local frost thickness distributions far various test conditions were presented along with the frost mass data measured at the given operating times. The effect of humidity and velocity of humid air on frosting were analyzed.

  • The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack, and peel-off failure, shear bond failure in the end contact zone, was investigated due to humidity changes. To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial surface humidity of overlaid concrete structures was 100% r.H. With a atmospheric humidity of 55% r.H. and two load cases for drying(LCI), curing and drying(LC2), the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface of CM2O, ECM25, and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone without CM2O. The peel-off failure was proved to be the main cause of the damage in the overlaid concrete structures. Only for overlay thickness of 1cm occurred no peel-off failure in the case of drying after a long-term public use(LC1). In the case of curing and drying during overlay work(LC2) occurred the peel-off failure within 1.5days for all the overlaid concrete structures.
