This study discussed the pozzolanic properties of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) according to calcination and fineness conditions. The chemical and mineralogical analysis of CSS according to calcination temperature and time were carried out and compared with that of the existing pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, blast furnance slag and meta-kaolin. Various mortars were made by mixing those CSS and $Ca(OH)_2$ (1:1 wt. %), and their compressive strength and hydrates according to experimental factors such as fineness of CSS and curing age were also investigated in detail. The results show clearly the potentiality of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) as an admixture materials in concrete, but the CSS should be controlled by calcination temperature and time, and fineness etc. In this experimental condition, the calcination temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, calcination time of 2 hours and fineness of $5,000cm^2/g$ were optimum conditions in consideration of the mechanical properties and economic efficiency of CSS. The compressive strength of CSS mortars was higher than that of fly-ash mortars and blast furnace slag mortars, especially at the early ages. Then, the utilization of CSS in construction fields was greatly expected.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification means that nitrification and denitrification occur concurrently in the same reaction vessel under low DO concentration. Some mathematical models developed to simulate simultaneous nitrification and denitrification reaction, but they have the complex model structures or have limitations of model application. To solve these problems, if possible that predict the behavior of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification reaction by activated sludge model, structures of the model is less complex than previous models and applies the various operation conditions. But original activated sludge models have difficulties in representing the denitrification reaction under aerobic condition. So the aim of this study is to interpret simultaneous nitrification and denitrification reaction by modifying activated sludge model. Original activated sludge model No.1(ASM1) was selected and modified. The simulation result in modified ASM1 predicted appropriately for the measured data. This indicates the structures of ASM1 are properly improved for interpretation of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification reaction.

Among the various methods for minimization of waste activated sludge, maintaining a low F/M ratio in the bioreactor is known to be the most effective reliable one. In this research, various experiments were performed to check the capability of the nonwoven fabric filter bioreactor, which has been proved able to maintain a low F/M ratio by maintaining a high MLSS concentration, for excess sludge minimization. The reactor was intermittently fed with a synthetic wastewater having a COD concentration of approximately 300 mg/L and no SS. Results of the experiments showed that the F/M ratio in the reactor decreased to a minimum value of 0.02 g COD/g MLSS-day as the MLSS concentration increased to a maximum value of 31,010 mg/L. However, the measured endogenous decay coefficients and oxygen uptake rates of the MLSS confirmed that the activity of the MLSS decreased as the MLSS concentration increased. Based on the increase of MLSS in the reactor and the mass balance during the whole experimental period, the average microorganism yield coefficients were computed to be low values of 0.148 and 0.139 g MLSS/g COD, respectively. These results indicate that the nonwoven fabric filter bioreactor employed in this research is effective for minimization of excess sludge production.

Bacterial community composition in activated sludge wastewater treatment bioreactors were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing for the four different wastewater treatment processes. Sequences within the orders Rhodocyclales, Burkholderiales, Sphingobacteriales, Myxococcales, Xanthomonadales, Acidobacteria group 4, Anaerolineales, Methylococcales, Nitrospirales, and Planctomycetales constituted 54-68% of total sequences retrieved in the activated sludge samples, which demonstrated that a few taxa constituted majority of the activated sludge bacterial community. The relative ratio of the order members was different for each treatment process, which was assumed to be affected by different operational and environmental conditions of each treatment process. In addition, activated sludge had very diverse bacterial species (Chao1 richness estimate: 1,374-2,902 operational taxonomic units), and the diversity was mainly originated from rare species. Particularly, the bacterial diversity was higher in membrane bioreactor than conventional treatment processes, and the long solids retention time of the operational strategy of the membrane bioreactor appeared to be appropriate for sustaining diverse slow growing bacteria. This study investigating bacterial communities in different activated sludge processes using a high-throughput pyrosequencing technology would be helpful for understanding microbial ecology in activated sludge and for improving wastewater treatment in the future.

In this research, the decolorization mechanisms of dye wastewater were divided into two pathways, one was physicochemical sorption to biomass flocs and the other was biological removal by microbial metabolisms. Batch tests were conducted to examine the reaction conditions, anaerobic and aerobic conditions, types and dose of cosubstrates, and to confirm the mechanisms of decolorization through the biosorption tests using the activated sludge and the autoclaved deactivated sludge. From the tests, the decolorization efficiencies of dye wastewater were 102 ${\Delta}$unit/g MLSS under the aerobic condition and 123 ${\Delta}$unit/g MLSS under the anaerobic condition, and organic removals were 82 $mg{\Delta}$COD/gMLSS and 75 $mg{\Delta}$COD/gMLSS respectively. Acetate was the more efficient cosubstrate than the domestic wastewater in the decolorization step. In addition the removal of colors and organics was increased with cosubstrates dosage. And $20.3{\sim}37.3$${\Delta}$unit/g MLSS was removed by the autoclaved sludge and $102.0{\sim}159.0$${\Delta}$unit/g MLSS by the activated sludge. The physicochemical sorption was dominant in the beginning of biosorption tests, and the biological decolorization was increased with a cosubstrate in the course of time.
To treat piggery wastewaters containing refractory compounds including nitrogen, biological treatments were investigated. In biological treatment, the removal efficiencies of organics and nitrogen by the activated sludge process and bioreactor using a BACC (Biological Activated Carbon Cartridge) media filled with granular activated carbon were examined. The results were as follows; in the biological process, when the approximate influent BOD concentration of 620 mg/L, through dilution, was treated by the activated sludge process, the process should be operated at a HRT of over 8 days to maintain an effluent BOD concentration of lower than 100 mg/L. In the treatment of piggery wastewater using a BACC bioreactor, when the HRT was 200 hours, the BOD, COD(sub)cr, and TKN removal efficiency of the effluent were 94, 75 and 64.3%, respectively. Comparing the BACC bioreactor with the activated sludge process, when the volumetric loading rate was 0.3 g BOD/L.day, the specific substrate removal rate of BOD was 0.14 g BOD removed/L.day in the activated sludge process which compared with 0.27 g BOD removed/L$.$day in the BACC bioreactor. The BACC bioreactor showed on average a 2-fold higher removal rate and was superior to the activated sludge process in wastewater treatment in terms of variations of loading time and high loading time. Therefore, the BACC process can effectively treat piggery wastewater containing high concentrations of nitrogen and organic compounds.
The design procedures for a biological reactor and a secondary settling tank (SST) of an activated sludge system are based on the steady state design method (Ekama et al., 1986; WRC, 1984) and the 1-D flux theory design method (Ekama et al., 1997), respectively. This study combined both of the design procedures, to determine the optimum sludge concentration in the reactor and the best design with the lowest cost. The best design of the reactor volume and the SST diameter at the optimum sludge concentration were specified with varying wastewater and sludge characteristics, temperature, sludge retention time (SRT) and peak flow rate. The effects of the influent wastewater characteristics, such as substrate concentration and unbiodegradable particulate fraction, were found to be considerable, but the effect of unbiodegradable soluble fraction was to be negligible. The effects of sludge settling characteristics, were also significant. SRT, as an operating parameter, was found to be an important factor for determining the optimum sludge concentration. However, the effect of temperature was found to be small. Furthermore, for designing a large scale wastewater treatment plant, the number of reactors or SSTs could be estimated, by dividing the total reactor volume or SST area. The new combined design procedure, proposed in this research, will be able to allow engineers to provide the best design of an activated sludge system with the lowest cost.

The study of waste activated sludge (WAS) solubilization has been increased for sludge volume reduction and enhancing the efficiency of anaerobic digestion. Microwave (MW)-assisted solubilization is an effective method for the solubilization of WAS because this method can lead to thermal, nonthermal effect and ionic conduction by dielectric heating. In this study, the solubilization of WAS by MW heating and conductive heating (CH) was compared and to enhance the MW-assisted solubilization of WAS at low MW output power, chemical agents were applied such as $H_2SO_4$ as the strong acid and $CaCl_2$, NaCl as the ionic materials. Compared to the COD solubilization of WAS by CH, that by MW heating was approximately 1.4, 6.2 times higher at $50^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, respectively and the highest COD solubilization of WAS was 10.0% in this study of low MW output power condition. At the same MW output power and reaction time in chemically agents assisted experiments, the COD solubilization of WAS were increased up to 18.1% and 12.7% with the addition of $H_2SO_4$ and NaCl, however, that with the addition of $CaCl_2$ was 10.7%. This result might be due to the fact that the precipitation reaction occurred by calcium ion ($Ca^{2+}$) and phosphate ion (${PO_4}^{3-}$) produced in WAS after MW-assisted solubilization. In this study, $H_2SO_4$ turned out to be the optimal agent for the enhancement of MW efficiency, the addition of 0.2 M $H_2SO_4$ was the most effective condition for MW-assisted WAS solubilization.

The purpose of this study is to examine the basis of design condition of existing treatment processes, namely, Extended Aeration Process, Conventional Activated Process, High Rate Aeration Process and Modified Aeration Process, by clarifying the correlations of influent wastewater concentration, hydraulic retention time, food-to-microorganism ratio and sedimentation of sludge, as well as to ascertain the feasibility of design, regardless of the existing design condition. In particular, this study made a priority investigation of hydraulic retention time and sludge sedimentation, because sludge sedimentation is the main factor$^{1)}$ which determines the operating conditions of existing treatment processes. Therefore, it is generally known that in case exceeds the sphere of design presented for each treatment, sludge bulking may occur. The results of Lesperance's test$^{1)}$, which formed the basis of design, showed the sphere of loading without security of sludge sedimentation, as in Fig. 1. The reason for sludge bulking in a certain condition, as above, is due to failure in application of optimum loading corresponding to each retention time by employing a few operating condition, which proved to be consecutively workable after years of trials and failures by Lesperance, for test conditions. However, the result of this test showed that in case of proper maintenance of loading. sludge sedimentation can be ensured under 120 SVI. Therefore, this study suggested hydraulic retention time and its corresponding optimum loading, and identified the hydraulic retention time as a determinant of sludge sedimentation. And. on the basis of these findings, this study suggested the feasiblity of UHR(Ultra High Rate), a new operating process, exceeding several times the applicable loading value of High Rate Aeration Process under one hour retention time which has not yet applied to the existing treatment processes.
