  • Even though high performance concrete was developed according to the trend of bigger and higher of reinforced concrete building, the rheological evaluations such as viscosity, yield stress are not enough to use as input data to accomplish the numerical analysis for the construction design. So there are many problems in the harden concrete such as poor compaction, rock pocket and crack, etc. in the field. In this study, consistency curves were measured by the viscometer as hydration reaction time passed. At the same time the slump flow test and Vicat setting test were carried out for comparing with the results of rheological properties. The fluidity of the W/B 30% decreased as the increase of replacement ratio of blast furnace slag. But in case of W/B 40%, the replacement ration did not significantly influenced to the slump flow value with the passage of hydration time. By the replacement of blast furnace slag to cement, initial setting was delayed and the time gap between initial and final setting became shorten. Through the regression analysis using Bingham model, there are a sudden changes of viscosity and yield stress around initial setting in case of low W/B 30%. The increase of workability by the change of free water in cement paste was offset by the coating effect of impermeable layer in case of W/B 40%.

  • This high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction study examined the change of bulk modulus of C-S-H(I), core material creating strength in alkali-activated slag cement as well as structural model of C-S-H, mainly attributed to Al-substitution for Si, which occurs at the bridging tetrahedral sites in dreierketten silicate chains in the nanostructure of C-S-H(I). This study presents that Al-substitution in C-S-H(I) does not affect the bulk modulus of C-S-H(I), which is surprising because many researchers have expected that Al-substitution should induce some critical change in mechanical properties of C-S-H(I).

  • To evaluate the effects of limestone powder and silica fume on the properties of high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) blended cement concrete, this study investigated the rheology, strength development, hydration and pozzolanic reaction characteristics, porosity and pore size distribution of high-strength mortars with the water-to-binder ratio of 20, 50 to 80% GGBFS, up to 20% limestone powder, and up to 10% silica fume. According to test results, compared with the Portland cement mixture, the high-volume GGBFS mixture had much higher flow due to the low surface friction of GGBFS particles and higher strength in the early age due to the accelerated cement hydration by increase of free water; however, because of too low water-to-binder ratio and cement content, and lack of calcium hydroxide content, the pozzolanic reactio cannot be activated and the long-term strength development was limited. Limestone powder did not affect the flowability, and also accelerate the early cement hydration. However, because its effect on the acceleration of cement hydration is not greater than that of GGBFS, and it does not have hydraulic reactivity unlikely to GGBFS, compressive strength was reduced proportional to the replacement ratio of limestone powder. Also, silica fume and very fine GGBFS lowered flow and strength by absorbing more free water required for cement hydration. Capillary porosities of GGBFS blended mortars were smaller than that of OPC mortar, but the effect of limestone powder on porosity was not noticeable, and silica fume increased porosity due to low degree of hydration. Nevertheless, it is confirmed that the addition of GGBFS and silica fume increases fine pores.

  • In this paper, the engineering properties and estimation of drying shrinkage of concrete incorporating fly ash (FA), blast furnace slag (BS) and cement kiln dust (CKD) were discussed. FA, BS and CKD contents ranged from 0% to 20%. Water to binder ratio (W/B) also ranged from 40 to 50 %, with a 5% interval. For estimating drying shrinkage, an exponential model proposed by the author was applied, According to results, the use of FA, BS and CKD resulted in a decrease of flowability and air contents. As expected, the use of admixtures also decreases the early age strength of concrete, while at later age, due to a pozzolanic reaction of FA and BS, the compressive strength was recovered to a value comparable with that of plain concrete. For drying shrinkage, the use of admixtures led to an increase in the drying shrinkage of concrete. The exponential model suggested by the author showed good agreement between the calculated and experimental values both at early age and at later age.

  • The recycling of demolished concrete as an alternative source of coarse aggregates for the production of new concrete can help to solve the growing waste disposal crisis and the problem of the depletion of natural aggregates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the chloride migration of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials by the chloride migration coefficient. The specimens were made with recycled coarse aggregate at various replacement ratios (10, 30, 50%) and metakaolin, blast furnace slag, and fly ash is replaced for recycled concrete with a mixing ratio of 20%. The major results are as follows. 1) The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials increases as the curing age and chloride diffusivity decreases. 2) When the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate is 30%, the chloride migration coefficient of recycled concrete containing blast furnace slag or metakaolin that shows a value similar to or lower than that of plain concrete at all ages.

  • Electric arc furnace slag is made in ironworks during steel refining, it is been increasing chemical and physical resistibility using ageing method of unstable state of melting steel slag for using concrete's fine aggregates. Which is been changing stable molecular structure of aggregates, it restrains moving of ion and molecule. In Korea, KS F 4571 has been prepared for using the electric arc furnace slag to concrete aggregates. In this study, Electric arc furnace slag is used in the PMC(Polymer Modified Concrete) which is applied a bridge pavement of rehabilitation, largely. In that case, this study evaluates the structural safety about increasing the specific weight. The 4-type bridges(RC slab bridge, RC rigid-frame bridge, PSC Beam bridge, Steel box girder bridge) pavement's increasing the total dead load is in 1 ~ 2%. Design moments in a load combination are increased less then 2%. safety factor is decreased less than 3%. Therefore, the structural safety has no problem for applying the electric arc furnace slag within PMC in bridge.

  • This paper was to investigate the effect of incinerator ash on engineering properties of the high volume blast furnace slag concrete through Mock-up test. Test results revealed that the use of recycled aggregates resulted in increase of slump compared with the OPC concrete. But, the use of recycled aggregates did not affect the results of air contents and chloride contents. The use of recycled aggregates showed shortening of setting time of high volume blast furnace slag concrete. When the recycled aggregate was used, delay in strength development at early age happened with high volume blast furnace slag concrete compared with that of OPC concrete.

  • Recently, high fluidity concrete is becoming more prevalent. High fluidity concrete uses admixture or thickener in order to prevent separation of materials due to increased fluidity, and, especially, BS is becoming more use for reduced heat of hydration and improved long-term strength. This study examined the effect of BS on fluidity of cement paste from a rheological viewpoint. As for BS types, materials equivalent to 1 types of KS F 2563 and the cement mass was substituted by 20, 40, 60, 80%.

  • This study was intended to examine the possibility of reducing hydration heat by FA substitution and combination of slag (CGS) from coal gasification power generation (IGCC) with mixed aggregate for concrete. The analysis results showed good results if liquidity increases as the ratio of CGS increases, air volume decreases, and compressive strength is mixed up to 25% in the residual aggregate. The results showed that the heat of hydration was reduced compared to plain due to the boron content of CGS as the CGS substitution rate increased, but it was larger due to the combination with FA substitution. It was found that the heat of hydration was reduced.
