Recently, modular structural systems have been applicable to building construction since they can significantly reduce building construction time. They consists of several unit modular frames of which each beam-column joint employs an access hole for connecting unit modular frames. Their structural design is usually carried out under the assumption that their load-carrying mechanism is similar to that of a traditional steel moment-resisting system. In order to obtain the validation of this assumption, the cyclic characteristics of beam-column joints in a unit modular frame should be investigate. This study carried out finite element analyses(FEM) of unit modular frames to investigate the cyclic behavior of beam-column joints with the structural influence of access holes. Analysis results show that the unit modular frames present stable cyclic response with large deformation capacities and their joints are classified into partial moment connections. Also, this study develops a simple spring model for earthquake nonlinear analyses and suggests the Ramberg-Osgood hysteretic rule to capture the cyclic response of unit modular frames.
Many types of pipe whip restraints are installed to protect the structural components from the anticipated pipe whip phenomena of high energy lines in nuclear power plants. It is necessary to investigate these phenomena accurately in order to design the pipe whip restraints properly and/or to evaluate the acceptability of the pipe whip restraint design. Various research programs have been conducted in many countries to develop analytical methods and to verify the validity of the methods. In this study, various types of finite elements in ANSYS[1], the general purpose finite element computer program, was used to simulate the postulated pipe whips to obtain impact loads and the calculated results were compared with the specific experimental results from the sample pipe whip test for the U-shaped pipe whip restraints. Some calculational models, having the gap element or the spring element between the pipe whip restraint and the pipe line, give reasonably good transient responses of the restraint forces compared with the experimental results, and could be useful in evaluating the acceptability of the pipe whip restraint design.

The free span of a subsea pipeline due to seabed scouring can result in structural failure by severe ocean environmental loads and vortex induced vibrations. This Paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free spans under axial compressive load. The variation of allowable lengths of static and dynamic free spans is examined for generalized boundary conditions. The free span is modelled as a beam with an elastic foundations and the boundary condition is replaced by linear and rotational springs at each end. The static and dynamic free span curves are obtained with a function of non-dimensional parameters. A case study is carried out to introduce the application method of the curve. The results of this study can be usefully applied for the design of subsea pipelines with a free span.

During winter, the CWR (continuous welded rail) may be broken when a temperature drop below the neutral level changes the axial force, causing tensile fracture and creating a rail gap. The passage of a train on a rail with an open gap may lead to very costly derailments. In this paper, the use of a track-and-train-coupled model whose rail has an open gap is proposed for dynamic interaction analysis. Linear track and train systems were coupled in this study by a nonlinear Herzian contact spring, and the complete system matrices of the total track-train system were constructed. Moreover, the interaction phenomenon considering the presence of an open gap in the rail was toughly defined by assigning the irregularity functions between the two sides of the gap. Time history analysis, which has an iteration scheme such as the Newmark-$\beta$ method (based on the Modified Newton-Raphson methods), was conducted to solve the nonlinear equation. .Finally, numerical studies were conducted to assess the effect of the various parameters of the system when applied to various speeds, open-gap sizes, and support stiffnesses of the rail.

Although double-stage hanger is used in many homes for its space utilization and ease of installation, it is inconvenient for users to take off clothes hung on the upper bar due to its high height. Therefore, this paper proposes a new type of double-stage hanger that allows users to easily hang or take out clothes hung on the upper bar while maintaining the function of the existing double-stage hanger. 4-bar link mechanism is applied so that the upper bar can come down to a convenient height with one operation. In addition, an appropriate link shape, length, and joint type are selected so that the height is adjusted three-dimensionally to prevent overlapping of clothes hanging on upper/lower bars. FEA analysis is performed to ensure that the presented hanger shape can support the load of clothes during height adjustment and the feasibility of the three-dimensional height adjustment hanger is verified through fabrication.
Various approaches have been developed for the dynamic response analysis of piles. In one of the approaches, the soil-pile interaction is approximated by using parallel nonlinear springs, namely the p-y curves. Currently available p-y curve recommendations are based on static and cyclic lateral load tests. Other researchers have attempted to extend the p-y curves by incorporating the effects of liquefaction on soil-pile interaction and derived scaling factors of p-y curves to account fur the liquefaction. However, opinions on the scaling factors vary. In this study, the sealing factors, which reflect the variation of the elastic moduli of surrounding soils, were established combining the relationship between excess pore pressures and the natural frequencies of a soil-pile system obtained from Ig shaking table tests and the relationship between the elastic moduli of surrounding soils and the natural frequencies of a soil-pile system obtained from numerical analyses. As a result, the scaling factors were presented in an exponential function.

CWR (Continuous Welded Rail) may be broken when a temperature drop below the neutral temperature changes in axial force, causing tensile fracture and rail gap, in winter. The punching shear strength of RC slabs is estimated analytically by the simple truss model. To avoid intrinsic difficulties in punching shear analysis of reinforced concrete slabs, the slabs were divided into three sub-structures as the punching cone and the remaining parts. The strength of the punching cone was evaluated by the stiffness of inclined strut. The stiffness of springs which control lateral displacement of the roller supports consists of the steel reinforcement which passed through the punching cone. Initial angle of struts was determined by curve fitting method of the experimental data with variable reinforcement ratio in order to compensate for uncertainties in the slab's punching shear, the simplification errors and the stiffness of the remaining sub-structures. The validity of computed punching shear strength by simple truss model was shown by comparing with experimental results. The punching shear strength, which was determined by snap-through critical load of shallow truss, can be used effectively to examine punching shear strength of RC slabs.

In this study, a comparison model considering the stochastic characteristics of the load and member resistance of the shield tunnel segment lining as well as the variability of the boundary condition was selected and reliability analysis was performed, and the adequacy of the limit state design was analyzed by calculating the probability of failure and reviewing the structural safety. For the analysis considering the probability characteristics of these ground constants, the ground spring coefficient was considered as the mean value by calculating the quantitative value by applying the Muirwood formula, and the coefficient of variation was selected based on the existing research data to review the models according to the change of ground boundary conditions. Through the structural analysis of these models and the reliability analysis using MCS technique, the failure probability and reliability index were calculated to examine the changes in the failure probability due to changes in ground boundary conditions.
