The growth and flowering characteristics were investigated in forcing, natural, and retarding cultures from 2005 to 2007. The 'White Ball' was a medium-flowering fall-mum with white anemone type flower and had 16.2 flowers per stem, 3.6 cm diameter of flower in natural culture. The number of days to flowering and flowers per plant was 58.5 and 11.9, respectively, in forcing culture of 'White Ball' whereas the number of days to flowering was 54 in retarding culture.

  • A new spary chrysanthemum(Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Serapina' was developed from a cross between 'Relanse' and 'Yen' by selection of seedlings and lines at the Flower Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extention Services(ARES) from 2002 to 2006. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2004 to 2006 under condition of forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Serapina' was October 23th, and year-round production was possible by day length treatment. Its capitulum was 2.8cm in diameter, and had 43.4 ray florets and 28.9 head per stem in autumn. Its ray floret was yellow with green central zone. To flower in the short day condition, for 'Serapina' was about 46 days in spring, and 'Serapina' showed the vase life of 21.7 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007.

The natural flowering time of 'Green Candy' is October 28th, and it is possible to flower all year-round by shade and light culture. It has double flower type with green petals. The growth of plant is very vigorous and the color of the petals is stable when the variety is cultivated under high temperature conditions in summer season. The diameter of flower is 4.1 cm. The numbers of flower per stem and petals per flower are 12 and 217, respectively. The days for flowering under the short day treatment are about 58 and its vase life is 18.1 days in autumn season. 'Green Candy' was applied as No. 2010-212 on March 5, 2010 for variety protection and the plant variety protection rights have been registered as No. 3633 on August 2, 2011 at the Korea Seed and Variety Service.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the involvement of flower abnormality and S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine hydrolase (SAHH), which is one of the key enzyme in the maintenance of methylation. Plants exposed to high temperature (HT) and long day (LD) condition from 14-27days after short day (SD) produced abnormal flower, having numbers of ray florets. Numbers of ray florets were increased more than 2 folds by HT of $35/20^{\circ}C$ and LD of 14 hour comparing those of $25/20^{\circ}C$ (12 h/12 h). Full-length cDNA clone of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine hydrolase (DgSAHH) in spray chrysanthemum 'Lerbin' contained an 1455 bp open reading frame coding for 485 amino acids. It showed highly conserved coding sequences among the different plant species with over 90% homology. DgSAHH expression was decreased in abnormal flower inducing treatment of HT and LD, while DgSAHH transcripts accumulated in flower bud of non abnormality inducing condition. This result implicate that DgSAHH expression is affected by temperature and photoperiod during flower development and suppression of DgSAHH is a one of the cause of abnormal flower under HT and LD condition.

  • Root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus vulnus) and pin nematode (Paratylenchus sp.) were detected with high population density at the spray chrysanthemum greenhouse in Gumi, Gyeongbuk. The average density of P. vulnus and Paratylenchus sp. was 667 and 716 nematodes per 100 g soil and P. vulnus density were distributed 87% to the depth of $0{\sim}30$ cm in greenhouse. When spray chrysanthemum cv Chopin, was transplanted in September 2004 in greenhouse, P. vulnus were 854 nematodes/100 g soil in planting and increased 14,985 nematodes/100 g soils and 1g root after 10 weeks in harvest. Shoot weight and shoot height of spray chrysanthemum decreased 24.8% and 8.0% compared with non-infested P. vulnus after 10 weeks in greenhouse.

  • This experiment compared the regeneration conditions of the radiation mutant spray chrysanthemum 'purple ND'. The four different flower blooming stages (S1: 10% opened flower, S2: 30% opened flower, S3: 50% opened flower, and S4: 70% opened flower) and different petal parts (TBOP: the basal of petal and TEOP: the end of petal) were used to compare regeneration conditions between plants grown in MS medium supplemented with IAA and BAP. The highest adventitious shooting rate was identified in plants grown on the IAA $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and BAP $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ when using the end of petal at the S2 stage. It displayed 79.2% regeneration and produced 33.4 shoots. Rooted plantlets were successfully established in the greenhouse, showing the same morphological characteristics of vegetative and reproductive organs with those of the mother plant. Flow cytometry analysis revealed no ploidy variation between the regenerated plants and the mother plant grown under greenhouse conditions.

  • Chrysanthemum is a cut flower species that normally lasts for 1 to 2 weeks, in some cases 3-4 weeks. This has been attributed to low ethylene production during senescence. Reduction in cut flower quality has been attributed to the formation of air embolisms that partially or completely blocks the water transport from the vase solution to the rest of the cut flower stem, increasing hydraulic resistance which may cause severe water stress, yellowing, wilting of leaf, and chlorophyll degradation. Standard type chrysanthemum can be harvested when buds were still tightly closed and then fully opened with the simple bud-opening solution. Standard type chrysanthemum can also be harvested when the minimum size of the inflorescence is about 5-6 cm bud which opened into the first flower full-sized flower. While spray varieties can be harvested when 2-4 most mature flowers have opened (40% opening). Cut flowers are sorted by stem length, weight, condition, and so on. Standard chrysanthemum is 80 cm length for standard type and 70cm for spray type. Pre-treatment with a STS, plant regulator such as GA, BA, 1-MCP, chrysal, germicide, and sucrose, significantly improved the vase life and quality of cut flowers. It is well established that vase solutions containing sugar can improve the vase life of cut chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum is normally packed in standard horizontal fiberboard boxes. Chrysanthemum should normally be stored at $5{\sim}7^{\circ}C$. Precooling resulted in reduction in respiration, decomposition, and transpiration activities as well as decoloration retardation. There was significant difference between "wet" storage in 3 weeks and "dry" storage in 2 weeks. In separate pulsing solution trials, various germicides were tested, as well as PGRs to maintain the green color of leaves and turgidity. Prolonging vase life was attained with the application of optimal solution such as HQS, $AgNO_3$, GA, BA and sucrose. This also retarded senescence in leaves of cut flower stems. Fresh cut chrysanthemum can be transported using a refrigerated van with $5{\sim}7^{\circ}C$. Increasing consumption and usage of cut chrysanthemum of various cultivars would require efficient transport system, and effective information exchange among producer, wholesaler, and consumer.
