A Study on Channel 4's Station Identification: focused on 'Modular Typography'

  • British TV Channel 4 is one of the famous TV Channel in the world. Its station ID has also played a leading role in the developments of Motion Graphics including station IDs. This station ID's main visual design concept is its name and an iconic logo '4' at the same time. The first channel 4 station ID was designed by using modular typography to construct the iconic '4'. Modular typography is a technique of creating letters with similar elements. Channel 4's station ID was constructed from coloured polygons. The polygons split and converge at the same point in 3D space. Modularity in Channel 4's station ID is evidenced by the similar units of polygons. After the first station ID, Channel 4 was re-branded. Eventhough the station IDs which followed did not use coloured and geometrical polygons, modularity is seen in most of the station IDs especially between 2004 - 2011. In these station IDs, the iconic '4' is formed from similar natural and environmental objects like rocks, buildings, lights etc. In this analysis paper, there is a visual narrative on the history of Channel 4, the concept of modular typography in the original station ID and the application of modular typography in other Channel 4's station IDs.

  • 1980년대 초에 등장하기 시작한 위크스테이션이 최근에 PC 시장을 누르고 서서히 부상하기 시작 하였고 몇 년 안에는 기존의 PC시장을 점유하리라 예측은 어렵지 않게 되었다. 왜냐하면 위크스 테이션은 기존 PC에 비해 고해상 그래픽스, 고성능 프로세서, 복잡한 공학용 계산능력, 대형 디 스프레이, 특수입력장치, 메모리 증대 그리고 무엇보다도 공학적 응용에서 표준이라 할 수 있는 UNIX O/S를 기본으로 하는 등의 많은 장점을 갖고 있기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 PC가 당분간, 아마도 금세기 말까지는, 특히 위크스테이션의 가격이 PC와 경쟁력을 가질 때까지는, 그 위세를 유지할 것으로 예상된다. 그 이유는 PC가 출현한 이후 지난 10년간 PC를 위한 주변장 치와 S/W 개발에 참여한 업체가 무수히 많아 위크스테이션에 비해 PC 이용자의 선택의 폭이 아직도 훨씬 넓다는 이외에 UNIX와 DOS O/S를 모두 채택한 368PC의 등장으로 어느 정도 기존 PC의 단점이 보완되고 있기 때문이다. 앞으로 위크스테이션이 자료 수집 및 처리과정에 까지도 기존 PC를 압도한다 하더라도 결국은 위크스테이션도 개인용 컴퓨터이고 보면 이는 PC의 새 로운 변신으로 보아야겠다.

  • 국내에서는 최초로 디지털 콘텐츠 분야의 전문 종합허브회사가 생겼다. 지난 5월 17일 문을 연 이 회사는 아빛컨으로 디지털콘텐츠 엔터테인먼트 제작 및 유통, 중개 등의 사업을 펼친다고 한다. 아빛컨은 아, 빛나는 컨텐츠의 준말로 디지털콘텐츠 분야에서 빛나는 회사가 되겠다는 의미에서 이름지어졌다는 것. 아빛컨의 주요 사업 부문은 첫째, 온라인 상으로 고부가가치의 콘텐츠를 수요자들에게 주문 또는 맞춤으로 대량 공급하는 디지털 방송 서비스 부문이 있다. 이 서비스는 아빛컨 스테이션이라는 사업명으로 전개된다.

  • 수소 추출과 리포밍 과정, 연료 전지, 저장소로 구성된 수소 연료에 대한 연구는 세계적으로 번영하고 있는 중이다. 그러나 한국의 수소 스테이션에 대한 연구는 아직도 개발이 미미한 수준이다. 그리고 역시 수소 스테이션의 가장 중요한 부분인 수소 압축기에 대한 연구도 미흡하다. 수소압축기에서 가장 중요한 부분 중에 하나는 스너버인데 이것의 기능은 수소가스의 맥동압을 줄이고 불순물을 제거한다. 스너버 내부에는 버퍼라고 불리는 기울어진 판이 설치되어 맥동압을 줄이고 불순물을 제거하는 역할을 담당한다. 스너버 내부의 압력 손실과 맥동압이 최소가 될 때 스너버는 적절한 성능을 가졌다고 평가된다. 그러므로 이 연구의 목적은 수치해석을 통하여 스너버의 최적의 기하학적 크기와 버퍼의 각도에 따른 최적의 스너버를 찾는 것이다. 수치해석의 결과에서 다양한 버퍼각도에 따른 스너버의 독특한 특성을 볼 수 있다. 결과적으로 버퍼의 각도가 $35^{\circ}$일때 최소의 압력손실율이 발생했고, 버퍼의 각도가 $10^{\circ}$일 때 최소의 맥동압이 발생하였다.

  • Together with the requirements of tunnels, its construction methods and technologies have been pretty much developed, but frequent accidents happened under the constructions are just one of important problems which should be improved. To detect the potential hazardous factors in or ahead of time, speedy and accurate measurement are absolutely required, but currently surveying method using tapes, level and total station, has been generally taken in measuring of tunnel convergence and crown. The purpose of this study is, as using of 'Industrial photogrammetry' system which is supplying more accuracy and speedy in the measure of tunnel convergence, aimed at promotion of tunnel measurement technique and development in unmanned automatic measuring system in the future finally.e finally.

From the result of this study, we have got up to 1/20,000 accuracy and totally 6 minutes, from picturing 5 sections by one person to data edition, has been taken except setting targets.

Brand Mark and Station Identification for TV Channel Specializing in Childcare for House Husbands (가사전담 남편을 위한 육아 TV채널의 브랜드마크 및 스테이션 아이덴티피케이션 제안)

  • Social development led to systematic changes in the gender division of housework and the increase of house husbands. Accordingly, the demand for programs on child rearing for fathers is high. This study aimed to present a design for the brand mark and station identification for a TV channel specializing in childcare for house husbands. This study designed a brand mark and an applied brand mark, based on a literary review of previous studies. A survey on the necessity, preference and brand awareness of this channel was conducted twice afterwards, targeting 55 parents who are raising children who are in between the age of 6 months to 37 months. The first survey showed that the parents are in need of childcare-related channels due to their worries and fear towards childcare. When asked about their preferences and brand awareness towards this channel, some respondents were negative towards the form and colors used in the proposed brand mark and applied brand mark. This was reflected in the improved version and was tested in the second survey, which showed that respondents preferred the form that reminded them of children and found it more suitable. In regards to colors, respondents preferred high chroma navy blue.

  • WGS reaction over Mo2C and ceria based catalysts was investigated to develop an alternative commercial Cu-Zn/Al2O3 catalyst for fuel processor and hydrogen station. The Mo2C catalysts were prepared by a temperature programmed method and the various metal supported cerium oxide catalysts were prepared by an Impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by the N2 physisorption, Co chemisorption, XRD, TEM and TPR. It was found that Mo2C and 0.2wt% Pt-40wt%, Ni/CeO2 catalysts had higher activity and stability than the Cu-Zn/Al203 above $260^{\circ}C$. Moreover, CO conversion of more than 85% was observed at $280{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. But all catalysts were deactivated during the thermal cycling runs. The results suggest that these catalysts are an attractive candidate for the alternative Cu-Zn/Al2O3 catalyst for fuel processor and hydrogen station applications.

  • For the purpose of evaluating the safety of rock structures such as underground caverns, tunnels and slopes, rock displacement measurement is carried out to identify the behavior of rock masses. Tapes, levels, and total stations are usually applied to the displacement measurement. These tools, however, are weighed down by many disadvantages. In this study, a new displacement measurement system by precise vision metrology was proposed for the observational design and construction method of rock structures, and then applied to a tunnel under construction. Comparisons and investigations of the measurement of the tunnel have confirmed the effectiveness and applicability of the developed measurement system.
